It is 3D! When you can see more than one side of the buildings that's 3D, isn't it? |

Unless I haven't figured out the controls (possible !) it's just a perspective drawing. In 3D you can move around and see the buildings from the back, the sides, and so on. This is a representation of three dimensions but they aren't really there. If it were truly 3D you could move to a different position and see the whole city from a different perspective.
Google " vrml "
It wouldn't have been that much more difficult ... still looks good tho. I like it. More useful than a normal map.
Edit : here's a few samples. Need a plugin ...

It'd be fun to have a Shanghai one ...
Coffee - you are absolutely correct. Some mammals see two dimensions and mistake it for three. |

I'm running on Mac OS, and sometimes the map doesn't show up with the Safari browser. Firefox FTW! |

Hmmm ..... I do not think that having the ability to navigate makes it 3D. Even in 2D you could have the ability to navigate. My understanding of 3D is that it's about perspective and you can see more than one side of the objects. A good example is Nintendo's Super Mario. It's in 2D as is a conventional street map - you are usually looking down from straight up so you can't see the sides of buildings just the top. But the new Super Mario Paper for the Wii allows you to flick to 3D if you get stuck. |

Perspective is not really involved except that the use of perspective makes 2D objects appear to be 3D, which is where the confusion comes from.
A drawing is 2D of necessity. You can look from the front but if you look at it from the sides, top, or bottom, a drawing is only as thick as the paper. From the back it doesn't exist at all
A 3D model has information on all three dimensions. It's like a sculpture rather than a drawing.
Older cartoons were strictly 2D drawings. Now, if you'll go look here :
http://www.le-building.com/movie.htm
you can see what looks like a cartoon. Except it was created in a 3D program so everything in it is actually a 3d object with full x,y, and z data. If you'll look at the 'making of' short here :
http://www.le-building.com/makingof_staphylas.html
you can see that all the objects can be used from any angle. They are sculptures. If the map were made in 3D then we could find a building we were interested in, zoom down to ground level, walk behind that building, look up from the sidewalk or jump over it like Superman. Sorry, when I said "navigate" I meant in all three dimensions, not just along a line on a piece of paper.
Watch the shadows in that short. In 3D those aren't drawn at all. You choose a place for a light source in 3 axes, then the program renders the model into a flat view, adding lighting and shadows according to what you described. The program can only add shadows because the objects exist in (imaginary) space, not flat on a sheet of paper. Can't do that in 2D.
That's what all the noise was about vrml a few years ago ... never caught on for general browsing but there are some example sites. It's especially popular for engineering and training. |

Thank you

I was amazed at the quality of the building drawings, I checked my first 2 apartments and could find them both. It even shows the construction in zhongshan park where I live building the 2nd phase of Regent's Park next to the subway station. So cool. I found some mistakes, but I have to wonder... how do they actually draw the individual buildings. Some of them seem exactly like they are built.... |

In Jinqiao, they totally left out Dulwich International School and DongJiao Guest House (!!!) and some of the compounds do NOT look like what they drew. Still fun to look...again, too bad not in English or at least pinying. |

We actually talked to the company when they put out their first generation map about doing an english translation, and in fact our IT group even did some work in putting together some translation processes but alas they didnt see the value so... too bad for all of us.
They literally send crews out on bike to take pictures of store fronts and buidlings and then have graphics designers "build" the images of these buildings. Amazing process really. |

Only in China would they go out on bikes and take photos. In the USA, they would photo from a helicopter or use something like that. |

The easiest way to tell is to look up at a building and see if there is a whole mess of underwear and other laundry hanging on poles outside from the pricipal rooms of the aprtment. If there isn't any laundry, then it is generally an expat community. |

Can anyone recommend, maybe even post a picture, of a city map that shows street names in chinese characters and pinyin?
It will be good for me to be able to recognize characters visually when exploring the city, and also have an idea of what it sounds like.
i tried searching in the forums here but couldn't find any definitive answer on something that I can purchase for use here in Shanghai. Any recommended bookstores where I can find this map would be useful too.
Thanks! |

Thanks. The online maps and links really won't help me because I'm in need of something in my hand while I'm navigating the streets (Sure, they have street names, but not street numbers to help me find locations, etc.). But the 2nd link of yours did point me to this "Xinhua" bookstore, so that should help me narrow my search.
If anyone else reading this post has a hard-copy map that they recommend, that would be great too.
Thanks! |
