Post subject: college student looking for fun things to do

hey everyone,

im an american college student (born back in the day in shanghai) and im in shanghai for the summer...some of my friends from school are coming to visit for a few days and im trying to put together a list of things to do; i think i have most of the major tourist attractions for the days and some of the nights:

jingmao, pearl tower, century park, the museum, the bund, nanjing lu, huaihai lu, xujiahui, the temple with all the famous xiaolong bao whose name i can't remember right now, xintiandi, some acrobat shows, longhua, the french concession area, the old jewish place from ww2, and a day trip to hangzhou

i still have several questions tho:

1) where the hell is the jade buddha? none of my relatives seem to know what im talking about when i ask them...also, if you can suggest any biggies that i've left out or if you think some of the things on my list suck, please let me know

2) i don't know too many great places to eat; does anyone have places that they'd put in the "you have to eat here" category?...preferably in a price range such that the shanghaiese visit on a regular basis but a few nice, upscale places that cater more towards foreigners would be nice too...i'd prefer shanghai-regional food but some cuisines from other parts of china or even other parts of the world would do as well

3) i also know nothing about nightlife in this city; can y'all recommend any good bars or restaurants for some adventurous college students? my cousins tell me that shanghai's nightlife isn't great, but i have an inkling it holds its own against places like seoul or hong kong

well, that's about it...i'd love any suggestions anyone would have...thanks for reading and thanks even more if you reply!

1.Jade Buddha temple, i think DBJIANG has given the right direction. By the way, Hang Zhou is really a great place . ;P Yu Garden also worth visiting.
2.Place to eat...Ummm.. have u ever heard of Wu Jiang Rd? Near metro line 2 Shi men Rd 1. There are some good restaurants there, not expensive but the environment is not very satisfying....
3.For night life...I strongly recommend Xin Tian Di...every foreign friends gave me good feedback once i suggested they go there...
Also..Shanghainese especially the young like to go to KTV for night a lot...hahahahahahaha....

try Zapata's on a Wednesday night...... think it is would suit a college age crowd..... good mix of easy going people; dancing on bars; loud music and free margaritas for the ladies...... this was the case a month or so ago........just got back so not sure now but believe still good from what I hear.
casual eating all day; wide ranging menu - Waga's is good and also Element Fresh if you want to ease them easy.......... Jean Geroges if you want to blow them away.........

Also try Xiang Yang Market (Huai Hai road) . . . foreigners like to go there, especially if it is the first time to Shanghai. There are tons of small places to eat around there, but if you are in the mood for Western food, try Cafe Montematre, which is located on the Xiang Yang Road side of the market (can see it when inside).

Hot Pot . . . you should definately try that! I would recommed Yi Qun Lo. Several branches around town, but I only know the address for the one at 207-209 Hong Qiao Road, right in Xu Jia Hui. They do have an English menu available and it is always delicious and fun! I eat there about two times a week! Open til 5:00am.

Simply Thai has great Thai food . . . one on Dong Ping Road (can easily walk to Zapata's afterwards if you decide to do that on a Wednesday) and another in Xin Tian Di.

Bi Feng Tang - Hong Kong chain with lots of good food. Branches all over town. English menu.

In Yu Garden there is a wonderful dumpling place. You will see the lines. You can walk past the lines and go to the third floor . . . there will still be lines there, but not as bad. Crab dumplings to die for! Kind of an English menu.

If you get a craving for some solid Western fare, then try The Blarney Stone, also on Dong Ping Road. The food is pretty good, especially for a bar!

Temple Saigon on Huashan Road has good Vietnamese eats. Service isn't that great and they bartender can't make a cocktail to save his life but the food is decent. English menu.

Cotton's is a casual hang-out type of bar that attracts a range of people. Located on Yue Yang road.

Taiyro is a RMB150 all you can eat and drink tepanaki place. Several locations. One is on Dong Ping Road. Reservations required and be sure to arrive hungry! English menu.

Bali Laguna is southeast Asian. Located in Jianan Park. Very nice building and good food. Reservations needed. English menu.

Baci is a somewhat upscale Italian restaurant that will turns into a nightclub overflow for California Club and Upstairs at Park 97. Located in Fuxing Park in Park 97.

Nepali Kitchen on Xin le Road is wonderful. Book a table upstairs. You sit on cushions on the floor. Must remove shoes. English menu.

1221 is a well-known Shanghainese restaurant. Located on Yanan road.

South Beauty is delicious food from Sichuan provence. Very good! One on Huai Hai road and another on Taojiang Road.

TMSK in Xin Tian Di is a beautiful (and expensive) restaurant. If any of you are into decor, then it is worth having a drink here.

KABB in Xin Tian Di has american style food for good prices. Drinks aren't bad either. Make your own margaritas on the weekends.

A large portion of Shanghai's nightlife was shut down a few months ago. There is still lots to do though. Depends on your interests. Avoid most things that have an address on Maoming road . . . it is not what it used to be.

Now I am hungry!
