Not bad a all; I came here on 47 + housing. (given I'm in my early 20's)
But you can live quite comfortably on that here. Just don't go to Paradise every weekend

It is attitude, expectations and sense of humor much more than Salary and housing perks that will determine if you will have a miserable life in Shanghai with your package. Some people in Shanghai that make a mere fraction of your package are thrilled while others making several times what you will be making are miserable.

Wherever you go, there you are! If you have a miserable life where you are now, you'll have one here too.

Why do people equate money to happiness? Money and materials don't bring happiness. I lived in Cambodia for 2 years and some of the happiest people I have met in my life were there, and they had nothing.

the way the question is formed indicates the mental attitude with which you are approaching this move. As mentioned, regardless of your income, its up to you to be miserable or not.

I think you need to find a wealthy older woman. Most Chinese woman who are single and in their 40's have a very low market value. Find one with money, bank all your earnings, and live off your worm.

With 72,000 USD per year you will be fine financially. As people have said mentally is up to you. Come here with no pre-formed notions or attitudes and an open mind and you will have a new experience that will last a life time.

Pick the place & area where you live carefully. Read previous posts & use the search feature to read the many threads on the subject.

Get some local friends to better try and understand the culture because saying it is different is an understatement.

Lifestyle, lifestyle and lifestyle.

I have gone through ups and downs in Shanghai, having struggled for a year or so without a regular income. I lived in a USD2,500 service apartment and had to downgrade to a RMB2,500 local apartment. Well, was life miserable...not at all. Looking back, the experience of living a run-down apartment with the locals was the most enjoyablel time of my life.

Most expats tend to overspend in Shanghai. If you are new to Shanghai, you wil likely to be attracted to KTVs like Paradise or LA Disco where the girls are more than willing to please. However, please stay away from those places. I am sure, and many will second, that you will have more trouble than happiness in going to those places.

Just my 2 cts worth.

Why would anyone be attracted to paradise or LA disco? To meet hookers?

On that salary, you'll be able to enjoy western delights (western pubs, western food) most nights, if that's what you want. You'll be fine.

Pretax?

Depends on what you are acustomed to, what obligations you have back home (i.e. mortgage) and your investment / retirement strategy.

Agree, watch out the income taxes in China. If it is pre-tax, you can expect a tax rate of 30-40%.

Isn't sex fun? Even if we take out the sex part, some Ks in Shanghai can be rather fun.

If you are married, best bring your wife along with you to China.

I am neither a local nor an expat. After graduation from my university this year, i found a job to do international trade which offers RMB4000($555.5 according to 7.2 exchange rate) per month with some bonus in the yearend. Without house allowance I donated RMB900 for house rental. It would be definitely a miserable life in your eyes, but i just live happily , do what i am able to do and play E-sports games(counter-strike) with my teammates in the weekend.
I just want to say everybody at different income level has their own way of making fun, this has nothing to do with how much they earn at all.

So why not try to have a personal experience about the Chinese culture such as spending a free afternoon in a teahouse and have a cup of Chinese famous tea, or put your attempt to communicate with the locals. You can also watch Chinese opera, taste seas of Chinese snacks with different regional styles.

Here there are lots of things providing considerable fun with little cost, much better than wasting a great amount of money bucking for sex thrills in the bars.

Whatever , its up to you to choose the way you live.
