Post subject: Are you proud to be Chinese?

I read in a recent poll that something like 67 percent of Chinese in China claim that they wished they were something besides Chinese.

May I ask why?

I am not in China yet so I would like to know whats so bad about it that their own people would be ashamed?

I understand why I would want to be affiliated with something other than American thanks to Daddy Bush but why are Chinese ashamed?

Hahahaha…that is so funny! Think about when you have five thousand years of history, you could have kept the best, and the worst!

In fact, we do have the best, better, good, bad, worse and worst. But there is nothing you could do to change where you’re born. So be proud of yourself, what you’re, what you’ll become.

Meanwhile, do whatever it takes you, proud when you see and feel the best, ashamed when you see and feel the worst. Everything is relative!

And that’s the reality of every race and nationality; no matter you’re Chinese, Japanese, American, British, German or Israeli.

odd. i've always heard that an seemingly filthy ditch-digger in rural china with no education would look upon a bus load of tourists and be grateful that he was chinese rather than not. basically, it was better to be digging ditches in no-whereville china than to be anything other than chinese.

i believe that even though i am a chinese. Chinese people have so much concern about their 'face', so some of the things r not as same as they appear. on the aspect of patrotism, some of chinese particularly like to parade their love towards their coutry in front of forigners, but actually the 'love' is just merely skin. frankly speaking, chinese ppl also a bit selfish, individual interest is always more important than national interest. so of course they wanna get the chance to go abraod and enjoy the much-better treatment. so don't expect they would give the sh*t to where they originally from. whenever i see the tv program showing how much these chinese forign citizenship holders love China, i feel sick of their hypocritical. can't figure out why these 'patrotic ppl' would change their nationalities.

To all the chinese ppl here: don't give me angry look, i'm telling the truth though. i believe some of them also feel the same way.

I am still living in Shanghai-China, I didn't and never changed my nationality in my life,so not all chinese people are behaving themselves as badly and shamelessly as you talking now!!!!!

Hi Acer, do you know there is something called “United Front”? When they have this culture forum complaining non-stop how bad we Chinese are, should we have a united front, no matter we are Chinese Chinese, or oversea Chinese? In reality, we’re not that bad, not at all, and the majority are, in fact, decent human beings struggle to make living like every one else on the globe. As human beings we all are naturally selfish one way or another. That “face” is, in fact, as important to Chinese, as well as to Americans, Russians, British, and any others. Otherwise, we won’t have to raise the flags at Olympics.

Every government can make a list like that.
Are you really happy because of that......?

Can we see the poll?
Please.?

Amra...you are new on the site, but it is considered polite to substantiate a topic like yours with a link to the source.

I for one, would like to see the poll, instead of reading the idle conjecture in the posts above.

Thanks!

5000 years of history - ......and still 4999 years behind everyone else

Pleasures - sounds interesting.

Most Lovely Pandas - I disagree. ours are better, and more pocket sized. Plus eating them sooths the throat and clears the nose.

Image

Biggest Goldfields - hmmm. i don't want to play "mines bigger than yours" but wouldn't Australia or Sth Africa hold that title? Can't confirm it, because doing a good search actually brings this thread up!

Caligraphy & Paintings - well, Caligraphy is just hand writing. Who gives a stuff. And i would suggest that some Italians and Spanish fellas can paint some pretty mean pics.

Most Beautiful landscapes - yeah, pretty hard to argue that one.

Image

invented stuff - Who gives a stuff.

^ what a stupid ad unnecessary answer!

Anyhow, in the contrary I don't really think there's anything to be proud of being a Chinese, yes. Chinese culture, food and places are absolutely amazing, and everyone does admire China's new economic boom but does that weigh up to all the bad sides of China?

I know that some people have very bad image of Chinese people,
here are some of the reasons: (obs! im speaking in general, i'm aware of exeptions.)

1, the majority of the Chinese exchange students in Sweden copy their thesis from the internet (I know this is true, as a friend confirmed this), and in groupworks they also go to the internet and copy stuff, they are lazy!

2, when Chinese people go overseas they act like they're poorer than poor which give Chinese people a bad image, like those 2 chinese students who lived in my hall bought the cheapest low quality meat you could get and used things that was really disgusting for the others to see, and they never cleaned up after themselves (again, they are lazy)

3, when Chinese people are overseas they hardly ever speak to western people, I understand that they are shy, but at least they should try. Their english is also very bad so you can hardly hear what they are saying.

4, The Chinese people's clothing styles is terrible, esp. in a fashionable city as Stockholm you're being looked down at if you don't follow the norm. Sad, but true.

5, and the most important, the Chinese society is still pretty fcuked up. No human rights, corruption, a dictating government, all this just smell so ooooooold!!!

A lot of people will now criticize me, but let's be honest and realistic, both you and I know, that those are the main reasons to WHY a lot of western people look down at Chinese people. and sometimes I ask myself, why shouldn't they?

I think you misunderstood the question. I think Amara was asking are Chinese people proud to be Chinese. Not what is our image of Chinese people.

Nobody should criticize you for this post.

The question is are YOU proud to be Chinese? I think thats what Amara would like to know.
I think you are right a lot of Western people look down on All Asian People. The reason they should'nt is because because you should never look down at aNYONE. You should treat all people the same.
