close, but not all. probably 90%. in the prophetic words of a mainlander (who later immigrated stateside and came back to china many yrs later):

probably because unlike our tendency to blanket locals with the "stupidity" label, we sometimes find it incredulous that expats come up with equally stupid comments and generalizations that cannot be as easily attributed to ignorance (read; we sometimes feel expats should know better...though obviously I am wrong in some instances). |

What term would you use if they just didn't want to understand rather than lack the ability to understand or lack the information necessary to allow them to understand?
Many times it is a combination of stupidity and racism that causes local people to accept caucasians as English teachers over anybody else. |

Which category are you yourself in?
Sure there are some stupid people here. There sure are lots of ignorant people here too. Then there are the stupid & ignorant people. Yup -- seen them too.
So how is that different than any other place on earth? Lets take the good 'ole US of A as an example (easy pickings, but you can find similar nonsense everywhere). Yeah, no ignorant or stupid (or ignorant AND stupid) people there right? http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/12/creationism-in.html |

^ Was it your Literacy Volunteer that pointed out to you where someone was saying that only Chinese people can be ignorant, stupid or racist? You should get a new one. |

Don't you think its understandable through? Chances are the local cannot speak a word of English... so by what standards can they judge the teaching ability of the person? In particular when many schools have such dubious standards. At least if they look the part they can speak English... |

It would be understandable if the person had the mental facilities of, say, a two-year-old.
Try walking the streets of NYC and saying "ni hao" to every Chinese-looking person. Bring your toothbrush -- it'll take you a week to make bail. |

Funny defense. Clearly the poster believe this is somehow unique (or special) in China. Otherwise why point that out!? Ok, perhaps I'm giving the poster the benefit of the doubt now... Sorry. |

To give my customers some credit, they did have a justification. They think that if their kids have a white teacher, the kids get accustomed to interacting with whites and won't be intimidated by them. It's not stupid or ignorant - just misguided. |

As compared with being intimidated by black people or other Asian people?
You're right. It's not stupid or ignorant. It's retarded. |

What exactly does that have to do with the criteria for selecting a teacher? Or is that just your random oh-so-clever-insult-the-poster-so-I-can-make-myself-look-highly-witty- and-intelligen commentt? |

It has everything to do with assuming by skin color that one can or cannot do a specific task. That's a textbook definition of racism / stupidity if ever there was one. That you failed to grasp that, though, is not totally unexpected.
This is your post, correct?

The mistake you make is that you look at the situation with the benefit of your high level education and experience. You never think how you would see things if you yourself never had that educational background which unfortunately is the case for the vast majority of mainland Chinese.
Looking at things in this way I think its understandable that they might think that. Furthermore, I don't think its *stupid* that they might think in this way. Its ignorant. |

So now it's the poor-uneducated-farmer-feel-sorry-for-him trick?
Racism is stupidity. |

haha, i'm also here on 3000RMB a month, but I have family here to provide me with a place to stay. I already own all the toys I need (macbook, ipod, clothes), so 100% of my salary here goes to food!
I don't really expect more pay since I just graduated, and honestly I don't think I offer anything yet that local employees can't. I was just given an opportunity to come here and decided to take it and try something different for a change.
There is no chance I'd be here if I had to try to live on 3000RMB a month on my own, its just not worth the trouble. |
My advice to you: Do not start your working life in China.
It is much better if you start working in your home country for the experience. If you want to start off with some Asian experience, try Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore. You will find that you gain more by having a foreign working experience when you eventually come to China. |
