| Post subject: Entry & Exit Bureau in Pudong |
Having had to make my first trip down to the new (not so new anymore) Entry Exit Bureau in Pudong, I thought I 'd post a thread for future reference.
The Entry & Exit Bureau office is where we foreigners need to go to extend our visa, change our visa, or apply or make changes to our residence permits. This is NOT where one gets their Temporary Resident's permits (commonly known as the "yellow slip" even though its blue as of 2006, and pink as of 2007) THAT document is obtained at your local PSB office, your landlord or management company should direct you there.
Anyhow, the directions to get to the Entry Exit Bureau offices at 1500 Ming Sheng Rd, is to take the Line 2 Metro. The bureau is within 10 mins walk form the station at the Science and Technology Museum. When you get to that station, exit via Exit #3. Exit 3 takes you a few hundred meters underground before you walk up the flight of stairs.
As you exit via the top of the stairs, you will be facing East. Walk forward (eastbound) along that street (YinCun Rd). You will cross the first intersection (called HeHuan Rd) then continue past the Pudong Expo Building.
The following building on the right is one with a slanted top. THIS is the building housing the Entry & Exit Bureau. The Visa / resident's permit office is on the 3rd floor. Be sure to take a number on the way in.
For those taking a car, the Bureau office is at the corner of Ming Sheng Rd and YinCun Rd. at 1500 Ming Sheng Rd. |

I heard there is an alternative office offering same services in gubei or minhang, dont remember. Does anyone know the address? Somewhere north west of shanghai is best for me... Pudong is so far away... |

I've just been to get a visa extension on a tourist visa.. this is how it went;
i took a guess at third floor (visa and residents permit) i was correct.
there is no help or signage really, only a machine with 3 buttons on, all in Chinese.
i pressed all three, and got 3 tickets. The tickets had some English on. I choose the ticket for visa applications. (top button)
Then I found all the forms; I used a resident and work permit application form - the others looked more obscure.
Then a 30 min wait for my ticket number to come up.
For tourist visa extensions you need to tick the site seeing box on the back of the form. There is nothing about extensions!
I see the lady, and am told to go and photo copy my pink police slip.
I was fortunate enough to bring a photo. But I had to go away and come back with it glued on.
Then I was told to go away to the business center and buy an envelope.
After 3 visits to the desk. I had got it right. Visa in the post. Horray.
A process that would have been much less confusing if there was a note somewhere, anywhere that mentioned what you needed at the desk! |

mydo- there are actually instructions available in the "self service" area on the right of the escalators where all the different info sheets about visas and residence permits are arranged for one to find and read. Usually there is an ayi at the machine that hels answer questions or that directs you to one window that does answer in english. All in all, they do ok at that office. WAY better than the old Wusong Rd office for sure! those of you newbies can just count your blessings... |

Thank Yu for the accurate and clear directions, found it no problem today.
Aside from the 2 hour wait when I got there it was very smooth, now just got to wait for my passport back with that long awaited sticker inside!! |

Hi Everyone,
I've got a bunch of questions related to visas, permits, etc. and this seems like the appropriate thread, so here goes...
What's the difference between the following:
1. Police Station
2. Public Security Bureau
3. Exit & Entry Inspection & Quarantine Bureau
What's the difference between the following:
1. Registration Form of Temporary Residence
2. Pink Slip
NOTE: I think they (#1 and #2) are the same thing, though I only received #1 which is a white form from the police station, which I need for the Exit & Entry Inspection & Quarantine Bureau.
And I've got a separate issue...but let me know if this explanation is accurate.
I'm assuming that with my 1-year multiple entry student (x) visa I can enter China as many times as I want and stay each time for 30 days maximum. If I choose to stay more than 30 days, then I need to get the Foreign Resident Permit.
If this is NOT accurate, then do I have to acquire the Foreign Resident Permit in order to re-enter China? Unfortunately I will not be able to acquire this permit before I leave on August 28 - in this case I'm not sure what to do.

Generally what happens is this:
You get a single-entry X visa. Upon entering China, you have 30 days in which to obtain a residence permit. Failure to do that means after 30 days you are in China illegally, must leave and cannot return without obtaining a new visa. Check your X visa carefully: are you sure it says multiple entry? Are you sure it says "X" visa? |

Yes, it says (X) visa because I submitted a JW202 form that I received from Jiao Tong University. And on the visa, under "Entries" instead of the normal '01' it says 'M', which I assume is multiple. |

So I called the Exit & Entry Inspection & Quarantine Bureau and this is what they said:
With a 1-year multiple entry visa you can enter China as many times as you want within 1 year from the date of visa issuance with each stay lasting up to 30 days maximum unless you extend with a Foreign Residence Permit.
Looks like I'm going to be able to come back into China despite my not having my Foreign Residence Permit since I have a multiple entry student (x) visa.

There should also be another field on your visa which states maximum time per stay. |

It says:
"Duration of Each Stay '000' Days After Entry"
However, I believe no matter what type of visa one holds, one is still limited to 30 days unless one acquires a Foreign Resident Permit.
When I had an 'L' visa it said:
"Duration of Each Stay '060' Days After Entry"

I believe the annotation on the visa means exactly what it says.
Your description is strange. Students typically get an "X" visa good for one entry with a 30-day maximum stay. Within 30 days they must process their residence permit or leave China only to return if they obtain a new visa. |

The reason I don't think I need a new visa to return to China is because the student (x) visa I have is a multiple entry visa. And lacking a Foreign Resident Permit is only okay for me because I'm leaving before my 30 day duration is over. When I return, I'll start fresh with a new 30 day duration, during which I can apply for my Foreign Resident Permit.
I _hope_ this is correct, lest I be detained at PVG. |

You'd be better to actually go to the PSB or your university Foreign Affairs Office to ask in person.
I have never heard of a student visa which only allows thirty days per entry. And I have never heard of a student visa that was valid for over 6 months that did not require processing a residence permit within 30 days of first entry.
Why don't you scan the visa and post it here so all can see this strange, new visa? |

I actually called the PSB and SJTU ISO (International Student Org), and both confirmed that with a multiple entry visa coming back into China without a Foreign Resident Permit wouldn't be a problem. Upon entry, I'd have another 30 days to apply for the FRP.
And just to reiterate I have a 1-year multiple entry student (x) visa with '000' duration each entry. |
