Post subject: The Best DVD shop in Shanghai

It’s called Vertigo. I found it randomly as I was walking around by my apartment, and now I never go to any place else. Vertigo has every DVD you could possibly think of (or at least that I could think of). A lot of the movies I found there I couldn’t find at other popular places in town.

The best thing is that the owner is familiar with just about every movie in the shop. All you have to do is mention a title to him (he speaks English), and he will get it for you. If you are in the mood for browsing around, all of the DVDs are displayed on wooden shelves so you don’t have to flip through huge stacks. The atmosphere overall is also very comfortable.

Another great thing about this place is the quality of the movies. Before I used to hate buying a stack of movies, get home, and find out 2 or 3 of them won’t play. Last time I went to Vertigo I got about 10 movies; they all worked perfectly and were of high quality.

Anyway, if you’re a movie lover in Shanghai, or if you're going to Shanghai and want to go to an awesome place to get movies, I strongly recommend you check it out. I’ve already recommended it to a lot of friends who now all go there, and I just figured I’d share the news with all of you! Add: No.888, ChangDe Road, by ChangPing Road, JingAn. Tel: 13501927811

Deceptive advertising will keep some expats from visiting your shop.

Don't think is deceptive advertising.. It's actually a great store and certainlyone of the best in Jing An. Great collection and very high quality .. Bit expensive but the owner usually gives a discount to regulars!!!

Dunno about this though. I go to this store almost every other day, the owner is Chinese speaking and has no idea about movies. Maybe, you met his partner or something .... The only words in English, he seems to understand are "yes, no, discount and 30%"

Come on. A person moves to Shanghai, signs up on a web site, and their 1st
post is not a question, but a recommendation for a great dvd shop? and in
your next post you comment how the OP is deceptive about the "English speaking
owner". How can a newbie to Shanghai determine what is good dvd vs a bad
dvd shop?

RMB 15 for a dvd9?? Obviously expats are the target.

edit - i miss quoted the price. they are 15

Point of logic -- just because one is a newbie on Shanghai Expat does not mean that one is new to Shanghai. I was in SH for 3-1/2 years before I found SHExpat.

However, the other points are valid, especially in light of the inconsistency pointed out by vivek123 and the high prices.

As Yu says, take everything here with a grain of salt.

Movie Star on Dagu Road charges RMB12 for DVD9 and RMB7 for DVD5, flat price for everyone - not as cheap as the guys by the roadside but so far everything I got from there has been great quality. There is another shop directly across from them but I did not check them out yet.

I buy my dvd9s at 10 rmb not one turned out to be a bad copy. They have like a backroom filled with dvds so very go venturoof selection. This one's in yangpu district though and as I work there, it's convenient for me. Don't think anyone would want to venture out that far for dvds. It's on benxi lu close to anshan if anyone happens to be around the area.

I know it looks like some Chinese dude plugging his shop here but if you follow the Flickr link you'll see this guy is an expat named Anthony Bergman.

Having said that, the best DVD shop in Shanghai is VERY clearly a bit of a bold claim. Anyone who's been here long enough knows this is just another DVD store and there are hundreds like it (such as Dagu Lu Movie Star).

Mr Bergman, nothing wrong with trying to spread some good discoveries but please don't go too far over the top or people will not believe you!

You are right, it does appear from following the flicking account that the post might be real.

But he's still WAY over the top with his "recommendation". Reminds me of a friend who was visiting me recently and managed to buy a fake watch for 500 rmb and was so pleased with the price he got. I didn't have the heart to tell him he overpaid.

As a newbie to Shanghai (arrived Wed.), I have to ask. What is a DVD9 vs. a DVD5? The prices being quoted seem awfully low, are these for pirated copies? Are these regionally coded or will they work back home too? Sorry for the stupid questions but I have to learn someplace.

the technical difference between 5 and 9 is that 9 means dual layer. This alone does not imply quality, but, if it is a high quality dvd then the extra disk space is needed to hold a larger file size.

If you're new to a shop, pay no more than 10rmb for a dvd9, or 7 for a dvd5. Once you get to the know the owner and show that you're not a dic*, pay 8rmb for the dvd9 and 5 for the dvd5.

Take a closer look at the surface quality of the dvd's you buy. Many, not all, have been rented out multiple times to locals for 1~2rmb and the surface will have scratches or other signs of wear. What ever you, the laowai, pay for the dvd is pure profit for the shop. No offense, but they laugh at you inside when you pay 15 rmb for a dvd9, just like they laugh when you pay 120rmb for a 35 rmb shirt.

Blank dvd disks cost less than 1rmb a piece. Copying a movie is practically free (the suppliers deal in such large volumes the equipment is easily paid for after a very short time), and bulk delivery is also less than 1 rmb a piece. Renting a shop is 300 to 800 rmb a month. The shop also does not pay any taxes, and the part time works there make less than minimum wage, maybe 10~15 rmb a day.

10rmb for a dvd9 is 250% profit for a new dvd, and that's before they've made money on renting it out. Large companies, on the other hand, survive on 5 to 20% profits with few exceptions.

I am new to both this website and to writing in Internet forums. Apparently I insulted the intelligence of some of you by not being clear enough with my post.

By calling this place the best place to get DVDs in the city, I was expressing my opinion. Of course it's a bold claim. Obviously you don’t have to agree with me.

I have a connection with this place: I like to watch good movies and find them easily. Anyone who walks in the door of Vertigo will find out it has great movies and you don't have to spend a lot of time looking for them.

I said the owner could speak English. When I go there, I just tell him the English titles. He understands most of the time, is familiar with the movies, and gets them for me. If he can't understand, I just explain the English title in Chinese, which usually works. Last time I was there I got The Virgin Spring, Into the Void, and Peeping Tom, the movies I was looking for, without having to wait around or flip through a million DVDs. It was nice finding a DVD shop owner that actually likes and is familiar with movies himself.

As some other people I know also said they liked this place because of the selection, service, and high quality of DVDs, I just figured I’d try out the forum section of this website (as I just signed up). Perhaps some of you might not know about it and would like to check it out if you're in the area.

Anyone who has spent any time at all in China knows that prices everywhere are negotiable. It is hard to believe that one poster's "friend" could have been so ill informed, especially with such a knowledgeable and experienced friend as that poster around. At least this user challenged us all to think about the nature of a "recommendation."

Hope my recommendation was helpful!

If you spend time on this site you will find it is very common for someone to create a new account for the sole purpose of marketing their business. I mistook you for one of those.

Went to check it out today... wasn't too impressed for the high price i think Hollywood does a better job. They do have a decent selection of music/concert DVD's and oldies, more than I have seen at other places

Post subject: best dvd shop

well if anyone is still interested in finding a generally good DVD store - when i say good, i mean they don't just dish up any crappy copy, but actually sell good copies at good prices and also exchange without too many questions

there is an ok shop on taikang lu beside a doggy restaurant and a new building site, you can't miss it - its just over the road from the walking street entrances to all the cafes etc.

8 kuai for a DVD - range is massive - they got all the goodies - old and new.

By the way, i have only been a couple of time, i don't know them so am not advertising for them. up to you. if anyone else has been there you can back me up if you like

lostinspace is a LIAR!!!

I fell for his little scam and went to this shop on Taikang Lu, and yet despite his claim that they have "all the goodies" they did NOT have "Police Academy 5- Assignment: Miami Beach", or "Digby- the biggest dog in the world".

(Well actually they did have Digby, but it didn't have Hindi subtitles)

Clearly he is a stool pigeon for this so-called 'shop' and must be excommunicated forthwith.

buddy you are talking through a hole in your ass - i put this post up five mins ago so how can you say "I fell for his little scam and went to this shop on Taikang Lu"
Everyone has a diff opinion on what the goodies are - and if you think Police Academy 5 is a goodie - man you are all alone out there.

I am not advertising for someone, so can someone who isn't such a dips**t perhaps post something which a bit more real.

My friend, you need to go get yourself a sense of humour! Can't you recognise what is obviously a good humoured retort to your original comment! He's even helpfully answered your other question about where to find large size jeans AND a comprehensive answer to your beer question.

Do you really think anyone would seriously think Police Academy 5 was a great film? And didn't the Hindi subtitles tip you off that it was tongue in cheek!!

Looking forward to your public apology!

Gotcha, my mistake, take full responsibility for that one. Guess the beer goggles got the best of me! Cheers swiss-james. am actually looking for some real criticism on DVD shops though... anyone...

In particular, if anyone has seen delicatessen or city of the lost children would love to hear from you. Last time i saw the was in 2002, back in the days when dvds were only 5 kuai

For the record....I believe the places you are referring to are
"Movie Wordl"

and across the street....

"Better than Movie World"

I am NOT making this up! Very Happy
