Are there any clubs / orgs or upcoming events for financial professionals (investment management, insurance, banking) aside from the FC Club networking event?
Also, are there any CFA study groups around Shanghai?

Thanks. I haven't been to any of the FC event. How about you? How is it? |

I haven't been there either; it's actually the first I've heard of it. |

Is financial consideration in M&A transaction a hot discussion for financial professionals in China especially Shanghai recently? |

i used to attend events organized by chambers but end up getting more name cards from vendors. I remember i attended one co-organized together by few chambers, great night to know ladies and IT solution vendors and moving companies. |

I used to attend similar events, listened to all these financial 'experts', and found that I as a simple marine engineer forgot more about finance than these dunces will ever know. |

Finance means different things to different people, but I assume that the OP reference to finance is more related to corporate finance and pe/vc, NOT accounting, back-office work, etc.
To that extent, I agree that many of the finance meetings/events that I've attended here are actually quite useless - there are more people trying to meet folks in the industry (for whatever reason) than there are actual finance-type people. In the last finance event I attended, I only met 2 others (out of dozens and dozens other people) who do this type of work.
I believe part of the issue is that there aren't that many people who understand this space in Shanghai, and most who do understand it live in other Asian countries, such as Hong Kong, Japan, or Singapore. Either that or those who live here could careless about attending such events, which is just as plausible.
Andreas, I'm not sure what kind of events you attended but if they were normally hosted or organized by companies/people selling "offshore investment services", then I most certainly sympathize with you. Most of the time, those companies simply hire any foreigner who can speak English, regardless of what their backgrounds are. |

You are quite right about that! |

Not sure if it's relevant, but ---
How much would an underwriter (Life as oppsed to mortgage or securities) with 3 years of experience from Canada expect to earn in Shanghai per annum?
There are some North American insurance firms in Shanghai including Manulife, Sunlife, and AIG, etc.
Appreciate your input. |

Check it out. I can't make this time around though. Let me know how it is if you do go.
Cheers,

The most unblieveable are people who invest with a stranger over the phone. However if it didn't work they wouldn't keep calling. |
Why???
Those nice African guys are only trying to help you get your $2,500,672, 516 dollars back. It's not their fault that the Nigerian government is inefficient and corrupt. |

^ Ah ... SnappySammy, I must thank you for the nice dinner in GZ that you paid for.
Those same two gentlemen asked me to also invest after having invited me to a delicious dinner at The White Swan Hotel. I declined. I think we spent about 20% of your $5k. |

I don't like golf, but gotta give those underlings the opportunity for quality suck-up time.
I was only down there on vacation, now it's back to Shanghai and the sea of Shanghai Princesses.
Those now-not-so-poor fellas are probably ok. I'm sure they'll find your number when they need another $5k -- which should be soon. |

I'm trying to avoid exposure to the whole subprime market. No sense of investing with subprime humans, too. |

Good idea. Do you by any chance go to any of the two coffee meets at Coffee Bean? I occasional go to the Saturday ones. Maybe initially we can get people to casually gather and hang out together at one of these meetings, unless you have some other suggestions. |
