Post subject: How to prevent my cat from jumping out the apartment window?

With the weather getting better, we really want to open the windows - but know that our cat probably wouldn't last long if we did (we're high up).

I prefer to let Darwin work his magic, but my girlfriend vehemently disagrees.

I'm interested in finding window screens to install. Anyone else deal with this?

I have the same problem...

There is no where for my cat to sit and look out the window, so I think it may try to jump up to an open window and sit on the ledge...

But it may overshoot and fly out, or just fall off.

I dunno how to deal with it either... especially since I don't want a screen.

Screens mean I can't stick my head out the window to answer my cell, and plus, cats climb on screens.

Duct Tape?
Staple guns?

(Both to be applied liberally to the cat...not the window opening)

Useless suggestion, if you staple the cat's paws they could eat their way through it, and THEN jump out of the windows.

Duct tape is useless, since cats shed their fur, any fur connected to the duct tape would shed off.

And staple guns... although they may cause considerable damage to the cat, they are not going to hold it by any means.

On the other hand, if you staple a roll of duct tape to a leg bone or something of the sort, I doubt the cat would be able to jump that high.

Duh!!!

That's what the Duct Tape is for....Tape it's little mouth shut.
Staple his little feet to the floor....

Voila'...Problem solved

get screens installed on the windows in question. We have at least one screened window in each room that I want to open. We are higher than "mosquito line" but still got screens just ion case. Would likely keep a poorly-balanced feline from falling out. Places that make curtains also take orders for screens. They can be retracted when not in use.

I knew you'd said that, you obviously never tried to wash a cat without protective gear thus yet to the true powers of these furry creatures.

Just spray the cat with the shower head until it runs and hides in a corner, then continue spraying it while it sits still in the corner.

Very very simple.

I think I should buy some catnip.

Where can I get that?

I've been wondering all of tonight what it would be like to get high with a cat.

Tie a bungee rope to its neck, then if it does accidentaly fall out, at least it will bounce back up again!

I think I will go back with the previous poster.

Seems to be too way to much work with the Duct Tape and Staple Guns....and other posters have provided some reasonable objections to the technical merits of this plan.

I would like to apologize for not having thought through this plan further, but was somewhat limited in my knowledge of cats for 2 fundamental reasons:
- I am a dog person
- I hate the little buggers

Please forgive me for offering advice without the proper knowledge of cats behavior.

That said.....I go with Maximus.

Darwin was right.

If said cat(s) wants out THAT badly, I'd say nothing is going to stop it from killing it self. one more vote for Darwinism.

thanks for the curtain people tip yu - though the only curtain people I know are the ones at the fabric market, and I don't think you mean them. which ones are you talking about? and you give them orders as in window dimensions and then it's up to you to install, or are they full service? I prefer the kind where I'm not involved since I don't want to fall out the window myself.

as for the cat playing with it as a scratching post, no worries, we only plan to open them when we're home, and it provides me with a great excuse to shoot him with the water gun if he feels the urge to scratch. I like that game.

thanks for the duct tape and staple gun ideas too. I'll propose this as a backup if we can't find the screens.

PAWS sells catnip. Its also supposed to have the same effects as lsd if a human smokes it. But for cats it just calms them down and makes them less crazy.

Catnip does not make you high. or trip.

Closest effects to LSD you're going to find are mushrooms.

You may be thinking of "Salvia Divinorum", currently legal herb that is described by many as the equivalent of "an 8 hour acid trip in 15 minutes".

maximus, how did u finally solve the "cat-wants-to-jump-out-of-the-window-problem"?
Did u buy screens and if yes, where?

I think he finally found one of the curtain dealers I mentioned and installed a sliding screen that at least prevents stuff including an off balance cat, to not easily fall out. nothing can stop a suicidal; cat though. Hmmm, sounds like a good band name "suicidal cat"...

Check furniture markets like Kinhom (金海马) where in addition to furniture shopos there are usuall curtain stores. OR the market place across from Ikea at the metro stop, has some curtain dealers thatmay also have the screens. ALSO youc an try window shops, the little factory type shops that build and install replacement windows for apartmenst, as they often also carry the screens.
