| Post subject: Best Pizza in Shanghai |
Been in China for almost 6 months now, and haven't found a good slice of new york style, or anything other than pizza hut style pizza yet. Can anyone reccomend a quality pizza place in shanghai (preferably new york style)? Does one exist? |

When you find one, let me know!
In the meantime, Pasta Fresca's Margharita pizza isn't that bad. Different style than a NY or Chicago pizza (much lighter) but quite tasty. It does not have a thick crust and is a good size. For some reason, it isn't very good if you order in the restaurant . . . only if it is delivered. Call Sherpa's.
Although you have probably tried it, Melrose is not what you are looking for. The only time I like their pizza is when they are the only ones that are open and I have no other choice!
Pizza Italia is ok.
Uno's (maybe Uma . . . can't remember the name) is not high on my list either. |

The best pizza I ever had in this town, was at Baci's (Park97). |

I had a real good Papa John's pizza. Yellow Submarine is good 60% of the time, when they answer their phone. But come on, you can't get good New York style pizza outside of New York really. |

Damn straight you can't. Everytime I go home the first thing I do is get a slice, and unless my flight is leaving too early in the morning, it's the last thing I do before I leave as well.
Papa John's basically tastes like Papa John's in the States, which means it's ok.
The best pizza I've had in Shanghai is at Da Marco. |

Agreed on DaMarco...tried it for the first time last night and it was excellent. All my friends had the Margherita with mushroom and it looked like the way to go.
I've had better luck with Una's. Seems to depend a lot on who's cooking. Much better in the restaurant than delivered.
Melrose is so-so....worst thing about them is the time it takes them to deliver.
Jesus, I wouldn't even eat Papa John's in the States unless I was really broke. Ugh.
I haven't had any pizza in Shanghai that can compare with New York. One in Beijing did... |

Mathlete, I just bought an electric pizza oven with a real stone floor. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but hope to once I've moved. Nowhere to put it in this apartment! |

My family are all New Yorkers and I have been there loads of times and have eaten lots of real good NY style pizza. I would never even notice Papa John's in the states but I had 2 pizzas from them that surpassed anything I have had in Asia. I got it from the Hong Mei Lu restaurant and got thin crust green peppers, peperoni and double cheese and it was mouth watering. Even the crust was amazing. Costed 84 kuai for a pizza big enough for 2. Go try it I guarantee you won't believe it. Expecially if you have been in China long enough to really jones a good pizza. PM me after you try it and let me know what you think. |

Might be worth a try. I hate Pizza Hut in the States...greasy Wonder Bread with V-8 juice on it. But I've had some respectable pizza in Chinese Pizza Hut. Maybe Papa John is doing the same thing. |

What the hell is NYC style pizza? Been in California for 24 years and have had Chicago style pizza, but have NEVER even heard of NYC style pizza. Round Table Pizza--the BEST in the world. I guess Italians wouldn't agree.
They need to open a California Pizza Kitchen in Shanhgai. Closest international one would be in Hong Kong I guess.

What is up with New Yorkers and their own style of food?
New York Style Cheesecake
New York Style Clam Chowder
and now New York Style Pizza
Damn arrogant bastards. |

What, and Californians aren't damn arrogant bastards?
New York-style pizza IS the best, and I'm a Midwesterner. Chicago-style is just too heavy for me. With as much dough as Chicago-style uses, a low-carb version has to be an oxymoron!
Thanks for the help on finding a pizza, guys. When I get to SH, as least I know where to start looking. |

Papa Johns is the most authentic North American style pizza I've had here in Shanghai so far. I don't understand the huge lineups at Pizza Hut? |

I agree, Pizza hut is crap. I live in Puxi and I make the trip to Hong Feng Lu once a month to go to Papa John's. Does anyone know if there is more than one Papa John's in Shanghai?
I miss Lambardi's in NYC!! |

I hear there is a Papa John's on Huai Hai Middle Rd somewhere, there is also one in Pudong, near the Carrefour. |

Hmm I really like Papa John's as well, something new to me (being non-American) but I get peeved that I have to order a 14" to get a thin crust. My favourite flavour is Super Papas. I get mine from Hongmei Lu, but I did see a new one just opened just off Luban Lu, but don't know the street, across from Malaya Restaurant.
At Papa John's though don't know what that buttery like crap is that they serve with the pizza, why is this necessary? And if the guy that started this chain is from Indiana, would you call this an Indiana style pizza? Have no idea of difference between a Californian and NYC pizza. In Italy had some brilliant pizzas with completely different toppings, like zucchini flowers and even rocket lettuce. Quite a fantastic invention thanks to folks from the Middle East and to Italians who refined it to what it is today. |

Some years back I visited a Chinese Pizza Hut. When the bastards would pull the pizza out of the oven, they would then spray on some buttery, oily type substance that gave the pizza a certain gleam. It looked like they were spraying on that non-greasy stuff you use on a pan BEFORE cooking. Here, they were using it on the pizza itself, AFTER it had been cooked. It was sickening to witness. Never been back to a Pizza Hut, in China nor anywhere else. |

The garlic butter sauce and the jalapeno peppers are the best part about Papa Johns! I always ask for an extra garlic butter sauce...yeah, I'm a heart attack waiting to happen. |
