Started out as a nice thread, but attitude and tact may just lead this thread the wrong way. Lets try and keep this civil and maintain an informative thread shall we. |
Brainwashed? Me? Never! I will defend my western food to the death!
Attitude: Check. I got that.
Tact: No. Sorry. It's stuck in customs. Some problem with the import documentation or something. Maybe next week.
Now, if I could just get my new Zimbu avatar to upload, it will have been a fully successful and productive afternoon online. |

heh heh cool.
BTW, Jimix can be a nice place with indoor and outdoor seating. Food has been consistently decent though nothing to write home about. Convenient as heck though for me.
Other places to consider reviewing:
AFP
Kakadu
Mesa |

Kakadu sounds fakakadu (sorta yiddish word I just invented). City Weekend describes it as "Head Down Under at this establishment which offers adventurous diners a true taste of the Outback. Emu, kangaroo and crocodile make strange yet interesting plate fellows while a mix of aboriginal ingredients and indigenous fruits and spices heighten the experience."
(check out my new avatar. sweet.) |

Zimbu, any relation to Zagat?
You are certainly one of the pickiest foodies I have ever read a review by, but I can't deny it's not entertaining reading!
What about Japanese food? Come on, let's hear some more trash talk! |

Thanks for the tips. Personally I feel like I am going to shiny glass metal dusty hell whenever I go to Pudong, but I know some people really like it over there.
This "Thumb Plaza" place has been popping up in the forums a lot recently. I think that is where the new Malone's will open. Maybe I should check it out.
Do they accept RMB in Pudong or is there some other currency used there? Someone told me that karaoke coupons are usually used for financial transactions there.
It is really hard to tell when I am talking trash and when I am being serious. Even I don't know. |

I have been watching tv show House too much recently, so now I have a very angry, yet light, sense of humor.
Also I have a one way ticket to the USA burning a hole in my pocket, so my wit is sharpening as the date approaches.
Japanese food: I keep myself busy with kappa maki so as not to spoil the fun for everyone else at the table. Raw fish in Japan is probably ok, but in China, I think it is an invitation to your friendly neighborhood tapeworm to move in for a short or long stay. |

I recently went to the strangely named 'el Willy' on Donghu Lu. Slightly chaotic service but really great food. I had a creamy risotto which could challenge the Ginger Cafe Mushroom one for the best Risotto in town. |

El Willy strangely enough is run by Chef Willy. Used to be the House Chef for Torres wines. travelled the world, being guest chef in numerous restaurants. Was here last year at Sashas, Otto and others, and stayed to open his own joint. Have to check it out, he's a wild little chef. |

Willy is real wild and funny and talkative. Met him at Otto opening. He knows molecular cuisine like Paul in Jade 36. Playing with liquid nitrogen I think. Haven't been to his new tapas joint yet. will go there soon. |

blue frog?
wow.
i will give you that it is consistent but i dont find any of their food very appetizing. the caesar salad is overdressed in some sickly mayo concoction. the burgers have that hard-packed ground meat consistency (like a hockey puck) and they are served on that sweet sesame roll. the chicken wrap has enough mayo to make a belgian vomit. the pastas are consistently overdone and oversauced...and the drinks are horrible (the bartenders at the xing geng lu location have no clue).
and i dont know how many times i have been suckered into that idiotic bloody mary kit (same crap as kabb) only to remember they use the local sweet faux tomato juice, they are out of horseradish, they are out of celery...and it is insanely priced.
and last but not least, i find the prices high compared to the other joints. the sandwiches are what 70 or 80? salads are somewhere around 50 or 60 and nowhere near the size or quality of element.
i go with a buddy at least once a month who always insists on a blue frog brunch. over the years ive learned to stick with the grilled chicken sandwich, no sauce- safe and easy. but still served on that sweet bun and still pricey (78?) for what it is.
-----
and punjabi kitchen? i went there once about 4 years ago, took a look around and against my better judgment, i sat down for the feed. about 5 minutes after the feed came i laid down the money and left.
and i seriously dig on indian food. [good place for a plug for the excellent vedas brunch which i had two weekends ago...125 i think...not a buffet but a good selection of hot fresh food right out of the kitchen served at your table...unlimited tsingtao brownies] |

Where can I get a GOOD plate of fish and chips? Kakadu sounds promising (I had a gnocci pasta last time that was decent) |

That's a lot of friggin' mayo!
Re Blue Frog price: I like the higher prices as it keeps the riff raff out of the place so I can get a table whenever I want...I wish Malone's would triple their lunch prices.
Re Blue Frog Food:
I really like the burger. The fries are great. Douse liberally with Tabasco.
The Shanghai fried noodles are also really good. Order it with chicken instead of stinky pig meat.
Various sandwiches are good too, but always order them with no mayo, otherwise you will be like the aforementioned chunk-blowing Belgian.
The breakfast burrito is pretty good if you order it with rice instead of scrambled eggs inside. Sort of a sneaky way of getting Mexican food in the Mexican-no-mans-land of Shanghai.
Ceasar salad is best ordered with dressing on the side so you can control the Belgianism of it all.
Firecracker pasta is pretty reliable.
Soups are crap, I'll give you that.
Refillable ice tea and soft drinks are awesome (goddamnit, cartmann, why won't they refill diet cokes?!)
2 for 1 happy hour is good too. Much better than a half price special as it makes everyone drink even numbers of drinks. An even better idea would be 4 drinks for the price of 2.
Chips and salsa are ok, but nachos only so so due to the horrendously wrong raw red peppers on top.
Salmon steak is nice for special occasions.
Sam Adams beer washes down the rest of the menu items with ease. |

That wasn't gnocci...that was alligator poop. If it was a baseball player, the crowd would chant "pooooooooooooooop" when he came up to bat. Non-Americans, please ignore that last sentence. |

Try India Kitchen, Hongmei Lu North. Good curry, spiced up if you want, and authentic Indian cooks.
Only like Blue Frog for the Happy Hour, but I did try a greasy burger and cold chips once. |

I like Gourmet Cafe Fish & Chips
Punjabi been once and thats it....... first and last
For Indian food, I like Tandoor. Its expensive but worth it once a while when I need a good curry fix
Blue Frog is nice .... I agreed, the food is average. Using sweet local bun for their burger. Had their chocolate cake a bite and got to stop there. I only go there for drink for a pit stop. |

I'm surprised nobody mentioned 1001 Nights. Best Middle Eastern food I know of. Did I mention they have scantily dressed belly dancers there as well?
Don't know why New York pizza is disliked by some. I think its the best in Shanghai.
Best Fish n' Chips is easily Kakadu. I recently also had their new meat pie which definitely gives Shanghai Pie and Kookas Pies a run for their money. |

I had a burger at Johnny Moo's last night. It was pretty decent, but my mushroom burger had about 1 mushroom on it. |

| BTW, did u mean the "New York Style Pizza"? I always enjoyed having a slice there (only been to the Jing An location). |
Yeah, that's the one. The owner is "easy on the eyes" and seems to be at the Jing An outlet often. But the staff is untrained and the kitchen is really dirty. One time I saw them bringing in supplies threw the front door (I guess they don't have a back door) and the chef came out of the kitchen with a half-burned cigarette dangling from his mouth and proceeded to literally kick boxes of food supplies into the front door. His white outfit appeared the have been permanently dyed gray. Some other fellow smoker then manhandled the boxes up the stairs in a less kickish fashion.
The next pizza out of the kitchen probably had that nice authentic New York bus terminal smell of cigarettes and sweat....uhhh...no thanks. |
I wouldn't say the short, balding, American owner is "easy on the eyes" but everyone has different taste, I guess. If you think a guy who handles boxes of food supplies(unopened I am sure) and who smokes, equates to the establishment having a dirty kitchen, I would suggest to the OP that you need to lighten up a bit....or maybe u need to light up. I have eaten there once a week for the past 6 months and I haven't encountered anything that you have mentioned, nor would it bother me anyway. I wouldn't appreciate the chef puffing away over my pizza but I have never seen that and I imagine you never have either.
I really am not sure if your OP was meant to be funny or if you really are serious. Your attack on Zapata's is ridiculous, your general opinion about Chinese food sounds like you grew up on White Castles, and your take on Bubba's seems a little over critical. Not many establishments are going to meet up with your expectations.
If anyone truly listened to what you have to say, I guess they would starve. That's my 2 cents. |
