| Post subject: TV Satellite Dish Crackdown |
City to crack down on satellite dishes
By Lydia Chen 2008-4-10
Shanghai Daily Newspaper
SEVETEEN government departments will launch a joint city-wide campaign to wipe out illegal television satellites that can receive foreign TV programs across Shanghai, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Authorities including Shanghai Media Group, the industrial and commercial administration, public security forces, the real estate bureau, prosecutors and courts have already released notices to more than 11,000 property management companies across the city about the campaign, the report said.
Installations of the satellites in public places such as roof tops and the walls of residential buildings will be major targets during this year's campaign, the report said.
The authority may dismantle the illegal satellites by force if owners refuse to cooperate, the report added.
Those who resist the dismantlement may face prosecution, it said.
On the Chinese mainland, TV satellites receiving foreign channels are allowed only in special-granted government departments such as authorities in the fields of national defense, military, foreign affairs.
Hotels with more than three-stars and communities with more than 80 percent foreign residents are also allowed to install satellite television.
The report added that the number of illegal TV satellites was estimated to be more than 300,000 in Shanghai. |

I'm tired of it all - the terrorist tactics by Dream, cutting out channels, the hassle getting new cards, the uncertainly over how long it will last, and now this. Trying to watch sat tv in this country is more trouble than its worth. |

This is an annula event.
No need to get any more upset over this one than the ones during the last three years.
Here is how you deal with it.
- Your building will post a notice that they are going to remove any dishes not removed by the owner on some said date.
- 4 days before that date....take some WD-40 and spray it on the 4 little nuts holding your dream dish to the building
- 3 days before said date.....Clean the dish, remove the 4 little nuts, unscrew the cable from the receiver, and place the dish in the back bedroom.
- On said date.....call in sick and watch as they drop your neighbors dishes off the building. I usaully sit on the patio with a cigar and a glass of red wine.....
- Wait one week
- Reinstall your dish outside....enjoy.
Re-do as often as necessary. |

For this period of one week, maybe watch live streaming via internet. One such website is http://www.channelsurfing.net/
If anyone knows any other good website that has live streaming of channels then request you to please share. |

I think you might find that this year is different - I think the crack down will be more harsh. Do not underestimate the impact of the Olympics - especially given all the drama in recent days. China will do anything to control this situation. For example, very shortly no company will be able to install a new computer network until after the Olympics. My company was going to move buildings in a few months but now has to resign at the current premises because we will not be able to set up a new computer network in the new premises until after the games. |

Law gets behind effort to cull illegal TV feeds
By Lydia Chen and Chen Qian 2008-4-11
Shanghai Daily Newspaper
THE city's justice departments, including courts and prosecutors, will join the citywide campaign that aims to step up efforts to wipe out illegal television satellites that can receive foreign TV programs.
The campaign to regulate overseas satellite television broadcasting has lasted more than 10 years and will continue, the office of joint campaign for regulating overseas satellite television broadcasting said.
Installations of the satellites in public places such as roof tops and the walls of residential buildings will be major targets of this year's campaign.
''With justice departments joining, the campaign will have more legal backing. So the office has applied to the government to invite them and is waiting for approval,'' said Deng Ying, an official with the office.
Authorities, including the industrial and commercial administration, public security department and the real estate bureau, have released notices to more than 11,000 property management companies about the campaign.
The notice required satellite owners to dismantle their receiving installations within three months from the notice date and stop receiving transmission of overseas satellite television programs.
On the Chinese mainland, TV satellites receiving foreign channels are allowed only in special-granted government departments such as authorities in the fields of national defense, military and foreign affairs.
Hotels with more than three stars and communities where more than 80 percent of residents are foreigners are also allowed to install satellite television.
''Officials can ask the courts for the power to dismantle the satellites by force if owners refuse to cooperate,'' Deng said.
''However, compelling dismantlement is not our final target. The administration still hopes satellite owners realize their illegal action and remove them voluntarily.''
Deng pointed out that many foreigners had removed their satellites after reading the bilingual notice.
The number of illegal TV satellites in Shanghai has been estimated to be more than 300,000, according to industry insiders.
The illegal feeds are generally promoted to residents by SMS, handbills and by ads on the Internet. |

i know that I am a guest in China but boooh freaking hooo! What a joke.. Sat dish crack down.. What a waste of time.. There are more pressing things the government should pay attention to like better education in rural areas, pollution, poverty, inflation etc.
I love being here but have to shake my head when the government spends so much time and money on this issue.
People ALWAYS find ways to avoid the system, always. |

I guess we will all move into HOUSES then, where they cant touch us? you can read between the lines here, they want all foreigners to move into the expensive empty houses thus boosting up real estate prices.... |

It's another PR mistake - the authorities should approach this as an intellectual property rights/fair business practice issue. They should get rid of illegal satellite dishes - this is someone's legitimate business and we are stealing their feed. But cast it in those terms - terms that every person who is trying to make a living can understand and sympathize with --- and make it easier for people to get legal satellites.
(Of course, all of this is easy for me to say - I'll be back home before the satellite gestapo shows up.) |

Not Dream TV's fault if you bought a pirated box and don't pay them their due fees.
Dream TV also have a right to protect their own content.
The so called crackdown has not slowed things down at all but we understand that people are pissed off when their pirated system don't work.
Most of our orders are coming from expats who order 20 - 50 boxes at a time for themselves and their friends. |
