KameHamehon-

That is not a bad idea for when Shanghai warms up. Feel free to give us some suggestions. You can contact me directly at joseph.constanty@tangential.cn if you would like to discuss your ideas.

Joe any chance you could answer this question?

I think it would be great to clarify this to the community:

Last NextStep event I've been was at jwow. I was interested in Mr Stephan Montigaud, Managing Director of Fullsix Media's speech so I went there. Heard some complains from people that said drink prices at the night of the event were more expensive than on regular nights and that a profit split with Next Step was going on.

As I refuse to go to jwow unless for this sort of event I wouldnt know, but I think this would be a great opportunity for Joe to clarify here for everyone to see that NextStep does NOT make any profit sharing with the events (which would be a shame considering NextStep's emails explicitly mention "drink specials").

A fine event though, I did have fun.

(Hey Pete, good article on Red Beat on shanghaist by the way).

Haven't been to many, and can't recommend unless this drink think gets clarified (saying in the newsletter that there are "drink specials" and the specials meaning being charged extra compared to regular prices is a big no no in my book...I mean...selling your credibility for 10 rmb is what I would call "pathetic")....but let's hear from the organizers...maybe I'm wrong? If yes, I'd love to edit this post.

But with this being said, I have good things to say about the event I've been: the dude speaking at this particular day was accessible. That was good but I guess has more to do with him than with the event.

There were some interesting people there, some people just collecting business cards to sell to financial consultants the day after, and obviously the assortment of young chinese girls too eager to be picked up i.e. not really sure this is different from any other networking event in town.

I cant say I met a lot of entrepreneurs....I met a lot of people that, like Tyler Durden would say, work at jobs they hate to buy shiat they dont need, know what I mean?

Successful entrepreneurs hardly would need to network in this way, I'd think it would be much more private, in a mastermind kind of way, not so public, know what I mean?

Like most networking events it's all about getting drunk and hoping to get some tail, and if this is the covert benefit of nextstep, so be it...

But hey, what do I know, I rarely go to this kind of event and when I go I play "mental machine gun game" all the time, so...

last time , I went to Volar , to be honest, I am quite disappointed. The venue is so noisy and the place is too dim..... very difficult to see each other face even that is not important , maybe ... When I get up next morning I got a throat ache which I think I speak too loud in the "cocktail party" ....

To speak frankly, when we started NextStep last March we had the intention of creating a strong network of entrepreneurs. Along the way we have incurred a lot of costs, including, design, signs, advertisement, and other administrative costs. In order to make up some of those costs we chose to take a portion of the bar sales at select events, one of which was Jwow. The management at Jwow made a mistake in the pricing, and we did not catch it until after the event. We have taken the appropriate steps for this not to happen in the future. All of the venues we have dealt with offer discounts off of their normal menus, typically 20%-50% off. We are sorry for any confusion caused.

Thanks for the clarification Joe.

Another reason why Jwow is not to be visited under -any- circumstance.

To address HC comments let me say a couple of things.

1."the dude speaking at this particular day was accessible. That was good but I guess has more to do with him than with the event. "
We make it a point to bring speakers to the group who are relative to the interests of NextStep members. A critical component that we ask of all the speakers is that they are on hand throughout the evening to speak with our guests. Therefor we look for people who are good speakers, but equally important feel comfortable interacting at a networking event.

2.I cant say I met a lot of entrepreneurs....I met a lot of people that, like Tyler Durden would say, work at jobs they hate to buy shiat they dont need, know what I mean?

Successful entrepreneurs hardly would need to network in this way, I'd think it would be much more private, in a mastermind kind of way, not so public, know what I mean?

The purpose of our events is to create a casual atmosphere for entrepreneurs and young business people to interact. Mastermind groups are great and we are already in the planning stages of teaming up with different mastermind groups in Shanghai. NextStep Tuesdays are meant to be used to meet a variety of people in a variety of industries at various levels in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

has anyone been to Jwow (old Senses) since Mat left the place in 2006?

The part about not checking prices is just negligent on the part of the organisers. Sounds like poor business practise to me.

NextStep has recently launched its new online project, The NextStep Directory.

www.NextStepDirectory.com

The NextStep Directory is a business service listings website for Shanghai.

The NextStep Directory has been built to assist you in the daily operations of your business. Whether you are running a small start-up, or a manager at a multinational firm, the NextStep Directory will make doing business easier.

Finding quality and relevant information on China business can be much like navigating a maze that is constantly changing. Whether it is locating lawyers, dealing with real estate agents, or simply finding a reliable KuaiDi delivery service, the information is spread thin and rarely hold smerit. The Directory will provide a comprehensive list of services across multiple categories. NextStep Directory v0.5 has launched with thirteen categories, quickly growing to more than thirty.

In the coming weeks, easy to use features will be launched to enable companies to upload their company content directly to our database for publication on the Directory. At the same time we will be empowering the user to rate and comment on services rendered by NextStep Directory listed companies. Additional enhanced features are soon to follow, including side-by-side company comparison charts.

If you are interested or believe a friend may be interested in uploading a company to the NextStep Directory please feel free to email us at info@nextstepdirectory.com, and we will get you started.

Now I know what NextStepDirectory.com is about, it’s all about gathering a bunch of people as a chip or say customers resource to ask for offer who in need of these client lists. I assume the special-drink incurred is supposedly due to their endeavor to invite VIP and their speech. I have come across these service companies a lot, one I would not say its name is seemingly charity purpose. When I went over there and suggest an advise to them, they turned me down in an ambiguous way. The advice is about inviting the volunteers to host events for whom who have same interests and aspiration get together, exchange ideas or social things. They did inviting volunteers but actually they earn their own money. So I know they actually operate in profitable way rather than a charity non-profitable manner. I think it nothing wrong with that. Any one or company is entitled to charge others service. The issue is how you broadcast your image of doing that. Volunteering for the pure purpose of “creating a more developed entrepreneur community in Shanghai” or operate still with this idea but also be profitable way.

There are a lot non-profitable organizations in the world who are purely promoting their original ideas like Toastmaster. But the problem is it’s totally for free and it needs initiators put too much energy and time unless they finally pass on his duties to others. Is that originality could last for free for a long time? I doubt nowadays in this society, and it is also unfair for these creative initiators. How can they survive and support their family with purely benefiting for other people rather than themselves?

Again touching upon above-mentioned service companies, there are so many same companies doing the same things. I regularly received their price offer for different types of events. Sometimes I really doubt will there many foreigners and Chinese coming over to their events around 200RMB for one class? I can get hundreds of this class education over internet from prestigious university or WebTV or Chinese TV programs. These practitioners or successful entrepreneurs are very good at their profession and teach in good public speech. Also I can share many entrepreneurs business establishment and development at different phases ie, how they generate the ideas of doing this kind of business? Mainly in traditional industry or in emerging IT industry? What are the key characters and talents that distinguish them from ordinary people? How many failures have they experienced? Can they sustain and survive a series of failure after success again and again…… But someone told me shortage or distortion of information in the specific region at particular time is the right moment to grab opportunities. There are still many people who are unconscious of these information or don’t know how to find them. But I suppose these companies can only take these advantage at a short period of time. Because if it is profitable and easy to get money, it shall be many followers surge into. And then it will be severe competition of these service companies, who charges less affordable money and who supplies better valuable service.

As for NextStep Organizers, if the events you organizing at last turned out to be no difference with other community events and still charge pricey drinks, I suppose you will finally scared away the clients you firstly put strength to collect with. Like what you said, it is not easy to please every one with her or his needs. As far as I know, some people are big shots pursuer, they don’t really care about the purpose of the event, they just need a venue to splash out on the nights. But some really do. I haven’t been to this event and can’t tell if it is suitable for me. I suppose you might need to characterize these heaps of name cards and get in touch with these people how they feel about these events. I know it takes time. For some people, they are already successful and rich, they need a splendid place to mingle with these VIP, you may locate them at some gorgeous wonderful bars. For some who are still in the initial phase of establishing their own business , you might find a cozy place for them to knowing each other and exchange ideas. For some who contribute constructive ideas and expertise, you shall charge them for free or deep discounts that what I’m saying at the first place, advisory is not for free. Or the other way I would recommend of my doing. I offer my knowledge and expertise and expect to get other valuable expertise as well in return. That’s what I called benign interaction. Anyway it might be difficult to operate in details, possibly could inflict prejudice over somebody. But like what I said, entrepreneuring is not easy.

Hello everyone

NextStep has two events next week. As always we will be hosting our regular NextStep Tuesdays, on July 22nd at the Cantine Bistro inside the 98 Innovation Zone on YanPing Road. You surely cannot miss the office buildings that are painted in bold yellow, orange and green. It is a creative zone for architects, designers, and programmers. As always this is an evening to spur conversation among like-minded entrepreneurs.

Two days later, on July 24th we will be holding a roundtable on Private Equity at the Oasis Boutique Executive Office complex near XinTianDi.You must RSVP for this event as it is limited to 30 seats, it is free of charge. RSVP@nextstepshanghai.com

The Ins and Outs of China PE Legal Issues

Join us for a look into the fledgling Private Equity industry in China, and what it may mean for your company and for the future growth of China.

China is one of the world's fastest-growing economies, providing unparalleled opportunities for both foreign and local companies. Nevertheless, numerous cultural, commercial and governmental issues separate investors from opportunities and entrepreneurs from capital. The Private Equity (“PE”) market in China is showing promising signs of developing into a major global arena for investment opportunities. Of course, this is due in large part to the rise in China’s GDP as well as their excess foreign reserve supply, but it is the Government that it helping to pave the way to a more investor-friendly environment. New laws relating to investment vehicles modeled after those in developed countries are proving that China intends to be a compatible player in global capital markets. The Chinese government is working hard to configure its investment environment so that its economy can be fueled by PE investors, both from China and abroad.

Realizing the need for continued IPO expansion in China and to prevent Mainland China companies from listing abroad, the Chinese government will soon allow a less restrictive section of these Exchanges to operate. Called the “Venture Section”, companies will soon be allowed to list their IPOs as long as they attain certain milestones.

Don't forget to RSVP.

Cheers,

Babyjeans-

Thank you for bringing to light again how we operate with the venues around Shanghai. We do not collect entry fees, and have never done so in order to allow everyone to experience our events without a cost. Of course there are a number of expenses that are involved with running an operation like this, and we use the revenue sharing in order to cover our basic costs, advertising, printing, email, and staff.

I hope you can understand why we must split revenues with the venues in order to keep the event running. We do guarantee that the special menu for our events is below the standard fare.

I hope this helps in clarifying and misunderstandings. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 16th from 8 til 10pm at Simply Thai in XinTianDi.

Hello everyone,

On a completely different note, for those of you not following NextStep recently you may not know about www.NextStepDirectory.com, Shanghai's most comprehensive business directory. We are looking to create events focused on any one of the 35+ categories within. Have a look at the site and give us suggestions for round tables and forums that would be of interest to you. We are looking to launch these events in late October and November.
