| Post subject: Mac usability in China or is it all PC? |
I'm a Macintosh user and lover. Atually, I have both platforms (PC laptop) and proficient in both but when I come to live in Shanghai in a few months, I plan to replace my Mac desktop wth a Mac Powerbook and bring my new PowerBook to Shanghai with me.
I also have a PC laptop that I pretty much don't use anymore except surfing in bed (like right now). I'm thinking of selling it as it's still pretty new.
So I guess what I am asking is, is China very PC-centric? So PC-centric that it would be unwise for me to sell it and would the smarter thing be to keep this PC laptop and bring it to China too, along with the Mac laptop?
How much will I need to have a PC while there? I do a lot of stuff on the internet........ |

Depens on what you need to do with your mac... I brought my powerbook and use it to do basic stuff (internet, word...) really no problem |

I do intend to keep a Mac for my creative stuff like music recording, writing, web design, image editing, etc. and I'd like to maintain a web site/blog, etc there. So that brings up compatibility issues--wonder if I'd need to convert some tasks back to PC to run a site and if there are decent Mac services and products directly from Apple. |

yes, only a couple of people and a few chickens use the mac here but i would hold onto it if i were you. there is a store here on jinliang lu that sells mac stuff and can offer some help if need be. The mac store is in the same building as the pc vendors. Mac works very well here. no issues.
cheers:) |

Major issue's going to be if/when something goes wrong.
There are a few "Apple Corners" and very few "Apple Centers" in Shanghai and Beijing. My experience is that they could just as well be selling boxes of apples as Apple boxes.
Also, I've had to send to Singapore or HK for a couple of things for my aging G3 laptop as the markup here is extortionary. |

Agree with jaywalker on the markups. Extraordinarily outrageous.....
However, there is a community like SMUG (Shanghai Mac USer Group) that probably more reliable in helping you...... They have regular meeting every thursday.... |
