| Post subject: Health Inspection - Z Visa |
Due to the recent changes in rules, I am trying to get some clarity on the rules surrounding obtaining a Z visa in my home country (USA).
I have the list of documents needed, etc, but my company office in Shanghai is telling me that they "heard" that I might need to have the health inspection done here in the US. I went to the PRC consulate today and they were less than helpful...basically told me to have a doctor fill out the health form.
Does anyone know if the health inspection can/should be done in the home country?
I know I can just apply for the Z visa and they may tell me I need to have the health inspection and deny me until I have it. But more importantly, if they issue the Z visa is there some potential issue that I might face upon my arrival in Shanghai...or will I just need to just get the health inspection before getting the residency and work permit? |

I had the health inspection done in the US in late 2004 when I first came here. Once in Shanghai, I just had to go to the ' gov't health office', show them the results and the x-rays, they looked them over, and that was it.
Is your company hiring a relocation company like Santa Fe to help with the move and permits paperwork? If so, they should have the latest requirements.
From the PRC embassy website, updated 4/2008, I found this:
6. Do I have to see a doctor to have the " Physical examination record for foreigner" filled out?
This form is strictly for those who will study in China over 1 year. If you are to stay in China for less than one year, you don't have to see a doctor to fill it out.

I'm not saying this applies to you, just keep digging, and get used to it.
Here's the PRC consulate in Chicago: http://chicago.china-consulate.org/eng/zytz/default.htm
Keep trying to contact them, and sometimes email is better, requirements change frequently, especially now with the Olympics coming.
Try contacting the US consulate in Shanghai too, they have a weekly meeting on visa requirements for Americans:

Usually the Health Certificate is required for the Residency and Work permit part of the process. With that in mind, all you need to do is get it done here upon arrival at the designated Med center for 702rmb and be done with it. If you get it done overseas before coming, make sure you get the original EKGs and Chest Xrays, otherwise they will make you do it here anyways. Given that 702rmb is just a bit over 100USD, it may be much cheaper to do it here that the US, as this is an elective examination.
Good luck. |

I just arrived back (April 25th) in Shanghai from Hong kong where I got my Z Visa, and on Monday this week I went to the SITIC hospital and had the medical exam. While going through the process I met several Brits and Americans who were getting their's done also, however they were then planning to return to their home countires to apply for the Z Visa. It appears like everything else there are many versions of the Z Visa process. As has been mentioned on several other posts if the company you plan to work for indicates on the application that you wish to go to Hong Kong to pickup the Z Visa you can do so. If not, you will need to return to your home country and request it there. As Yu888 suggests its probably a cheaper solution to get it done here prior to returning to your home country, for example in the UK you can expect a fee in excess of 150 pounds. |

Thanks for the responses. I am still in the US and am leaving for Shanghai on the 20th. I did get an email back from the consulate in Chicago stating that I should submit the physical inspection record when applying for the visa.
I have asked them if there is an "approved" facility to get the inspection done and just waiting for a response. I have this feeling that I am going to get all this done here in order to get the Z visa and then will have to go through it again in Shanghai before they will issue my work permit and residency visa.
Good times |

No matter where you have your medical examination done overseas, they always try to make you re-do the blood work in China. |
