Post subject: Motorcycles in Shanghai

Does anyone know the offical laws concerning motorbikes in Shanhai. I am not interested in scooters.

1. Can you purchase and register a motorbike in Shanghai?
2. What is the CC limit?
3. Can motorbikes be imported and then registered?
4. What type of licensce is required to operate a motorbike?

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

u occassionally see sportbikes (i.e. easily over 250cc) zooming on the streets. they're illegal, but i hear if u avoid the main roads the chances of a cop fining your ass is minimal.

Lets talk further on the phone.

Something strange though, changes must be afoot because Harley-Davidson opened a shop in Shanghai recently and they aren't selling any 200CC bikes.

250cc limit is absolute crazy!!!
I was actually thinking about moving to Shanghai and get myself a Ducati 749 or 848. It seems that it is not going to happen!!

given the way traffic and pedectrians and bikes and scooters and the rest are here and how large a Ducati is, I'd say the crazy idea would be to try and ride one here. Now just to be seen with it would be cool but riding it here would be a nightmare, not to mention you'd never really get to RIDE it.

Had several friends with 77-inch flat-track style Sportsturds in San Francisco. You can ride that kind of bike in a city but here it'd be fatal. Traffic has to behave - come around a corner wfo with the tail hanging out a foot only to find some dork on a scooter going the wrong way right into your path, bam you're dead.

No fun.

Some places out West might be a kick tho.

Basically, in Shanghai you must be ready to come to a complete stop at any given time.
