Virus can cause poliolike paralysis; death toll at 22
The virus -- called Enterovirus 71, or EV71 -- can cause hand, foot and mouth disease.
Public health officials expect the number of cases to peak in June or July, the WHO said.

"Chinese health authorities have put in place targeted prevention and control measures in Fuyang city and Anhui province, including enhanced surveillance, training of health care workers at all levels in treatment, prevention and control, strengthening of environmental health management and the supervision and monitoring of drinking water quality," the WHO statement said.

"A public awareness campaign is ongoing, stressing the need for good personal hygiene, mostly by hand washing."

As per the latest reports, infection is NO LONGER limited to a few cities in Anhui only. One child has died due to EV71 in Foshan, Guangdong Province and several cases have been reported from Hangzhou too.

Any tips on how prevent our kids from getting infected?

as taken from kidshealth.org website:
Quote:
Contagiousness

Coxsackieviruses are very contagious. They can be passed from person to person on unwashed hands and surfaces contaminated by feces. They can also be spread through droplets of fluid sprayed into the air when someone sneezes or coughs.

When an outbreak affects a community, risk for coxsackievirus infection is highest among infants and children younger than 5. The virus spreads easily in group settings like schools, child-care centers, or summer camps. People who are infected with a coxsackievirus are most contagious the first week they're sick.
Prevention

There is no vaccine to prevent coxsackievirus infection. Hand washing is the best protection. Remind everyone in your family to wash their hands frequently, particularly after using the toilet (especially those in public places), after changing a diaper, before meals, and before preparing food. Shared toys in child-care centers should be routinely cleaned with a disinfectant because the virus can live on these objects for days.

Kids who are sick with a coxsackievirus infection should be kept out of school or child care for a few days to avoid spreading the infection.

The duration of an infection varies widely. For coxsackie fever without other symptoms, a child's temperature may return to normal within 24 hours, although the average fever lasts 3 to 4 days. Hand, foot, and mouth disease usually lasts for 2 or 3 days, while viral meningitis can take 3 to 7 days to clear up.

Quote:
When to Call the Doctor

Call the doctor immediately if your child develops any of the following symptoms:

* fever higher than 100.4° Fahrenheit (38° Celsius) for infants younger than 6 months and higher than 102° Fahrenheit (38.8° Celsius) for older kids
* poor appetite
* trouble feeding
* vomiting
* diarrhea
* difficulty breathing
* convulsions
* unusual sleepiness
* pain in the chest or abdomen
* sores on the skin or inside the mouth
* severe sore throat
* severe headache, especially with vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, or convulsions
* neck stiffness
* red, swollen, and watery eyes
* pain in one or both testicles

And an Associated Press update:

Quote:
China orders heightened efforts to stop deadly virus

By CHARLES HUTZLER – 12:15pm Beijing Standard Time

BEIJING (AP) — China on Sunday raised the death toll to 24 following the outbreak of a virus in another province a day after the Health Ministry ordered heightened efforts to stem the spread of infectious diseases.

Official Xinhua News Agency said an 18-month old boy who died in Foshan city in Guangdong Friday had died from enterovirus, known as EV-71. Another child who died in the district on April 25 also tested positive, it said. The deaths follow the 22 that have already died in central Anhui province, 1,000 miles to the north.

Stepped up vigilance by health bureaus and hospitals to prevent the spread of infectious diseases was necessary "to guarantee the smooth staging of the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics and to ... preserve social stability," said the order posted on the ministry's Web site.

Prompting the government to act was an unusual jump in cases of the enterovirus, known as EV-71, in Fuyang, a fast-growing city set in the rural heartland of central China.

As of early Saturday, 3,736 cases of EV-71 were reported in Fuyang's mainly rural outskirts, a rise of 415 in about 24 hours, health officials said. Besides the 22 deaths, 1,115 people remain hospitalized, 42 of them in serious or critical condition, said the health department of Anhui Province, where Fuyang is located.

State-run television footage showed workers spraying disinfectant around houses in rural areas outside Fuyang and medical teams visiting families with small children.

Meanwhile, nearly 800 other cases were reported in other parts of Anhui, the health department said on its Web site. In Guangdong province, 1,000 miles to the south, preliminary tests showed an 18-month-old boy who died Friday was infected with EV-71, and a second suspected death is under investigation, the Xinhua News Agency said.

Cases of hand, foot and mouth outbreaks, but not necessarily EV-71, have been reported in at least two other provinces, Xinhua said.

The Health Ministry said it expected infections to climb, and peak in June and July. While the order singled out hand, foot and mouth disease for particular concern, it also mentioned hepatitis A, measles and other infectious diseases.

Hand, foot and mouth disease causes fever, mouth sores and rashes with blisters. Spread by contact with the stool or discharge from the sneezing or coughing of infected people, the viruses mainly strike children 10 years and younger. Some cases can lead to fatal brain swelling. The illness is not related to the foot and mouth disease that hits livestock.

There is no vaccine or specific therapy to treat the disease. Health experts recommend improved hygiene, with more frequent hand-washing and disinfecting areas.

The large number of cases spreading across a large area brings up parallels with the communist government's handling of previous infectious outbreaks, especially that of SARS pneumonia in 2003. Government attempts to conceal the emergence of SARS, a new disease at the time, contributed to its spread beyond Guangdong in 2003, ultimately causing 774 deaths worldwide and forcing Beijing to apologize to the world.

When avian influenza started killing birds and sickening some people in East and Southeast Asia, Beijing was criticized for not sharing information on outbreaks and virus samples with international health authorities.

People in Fuyang also complained that the government's response to EV-71 was slow, allowing rumors to spread. The first word many people had about the outbreak were signs posted at hospitals on preventing hand, foot and mouth disease, the China Youth Daily reported.

The World Health Organization said Thursday that while cases in Fuyang cropped up in early March, they increased sharply starting April 19.

The WHO credited a rapid response from the government for steeply decreasing the rate of fatalities in the second half of April — to 0.2 percent of cases from 11 percent March 10-31. The ministry sent expert teams to Anhui to lead treatment of the disease and prevent its spread.

Outbreaks of viruses are frequent across rural China, where hygiene is often poor and people and animals live near each other.

In SARS' wake, the government invested heavily in disease-monitoring and ordered emergency response plans for outbreaks and other crises. Several notices issued by the Health Ministry on Friday and Saturday geared up those networks, calling for timely reporting of cases and the prompt examination of samples from patients with unidentified viruses.

Pointedly, the ministry vowed to punish officials, health workers or agencies that tried to cover up outbreaks or delayed reporting them.

A simple search on Google should give information. Those of us who taught in Singapore are very aware of this disease and its controls, and so are not so worried - just take the necessary precautions.

Another update Sad

Quote:
China says hand, foot and mouth disease spreading among children

May 5, 2008 8:05pm Beijing time

BEIJING (AP) — China reported a jump Monday in the number of children sickened with hand, foot and mouth disease, saying more than 9,700 cases have been reported.

At least 24 deaths in the central province of Anhui and Guangdong province in the south have been blamed on enterovirus 71, one of several viruses that cause the disease, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Two other children — one in Guangdong and another in the coastal province of Zhejiang — have also died of hand, foot and mouth disease but it wasn't immediately clear which strain of virus killed them, it said.

Xinhua said 8,573 children had been reported infected in the provinces of Anhui, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Jiangsu, as well as Beijing. All were below the age of 6 and the majority were under the age of 2, it said.

Most of the cases were blamed on enterovirus 71, also known as EV-71, but the report didn't give a breakdown of the numbers.

Zhejiang separately reported 1,198 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease. Nine had tested positive for enterovirus 71, the province's Health Bureau said on its Web site.

The ministry appealed for any sick children "to be sent immediately to health clinics" and for people to report cases to local health and education departments as soon as possible.

Xinhua said a majority of the cases were reported in Anhui province, with Fuyang, a fast-growing city, the worst hit with 5,151 infections.

Enterovirus causes a severe form of hand, foot and mouth disease with symptoms including fever, mouth sores and rashes with blisters. It is easily spread by sneezing or coughing. The viruses mainly strike children ages 10 and younger. Some cases can lead to fatal swelling of the brain.

The illness is not related to foot and mouth disease, which afflicts livestock.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment, but most children affected by mild forms of the disease typically recover quickly without problems.

The World Health Organization says the virus normally peaks in June and July so there could still be an increase in infections as the weather warms.

The outbreak is another headache for China's Communist government as it prepares to host this summer's Olympic Games, already tarnished by unrest among t¡betans in western China and an international torch relay disrupted by prοtests.

WHO's China representative, Hans Troedsson, said the disease was not a threat to the Beijing Olympics because the disease mostly sickens young children.

China's Health Ministry has sent teams to Anhui to coordinate treatment of the disease and prevent its spread.

Not sure about this one but I remember when everyone was panicking about SARS. We lived in Beijing at the time and it was nowhere near as bad as the media presented it. All we had to do was wash hands frequently. Actually, it was the best time - so peaceful, quiet, not many people around and no traffic!

My understanding is that EV71 so far has mostly affected rural(ish) areas. Hope all those kids get better soon and it doesn't spread much more.

As per the CNN's report, the infection has now spread to almost all the provinces in China (Shanghai is not mentioned in their report). More than 11,000 kids have been infected and 26 have died so far.

In June and July the infection is likely to increase many fold as the virus thrives in warm weather.

Now i'm seriously thinking of sending my 9 month old kid back home for a few months.

I know the feeling, butunless your 9 mos old is extremely mobile and you are taking him/her out a lot and allowing him/her to be touching all sorts of things, I'd say its a pretty safe age as compared to tddlers in the 1-3 range where they are fully mobile and all over the place when out. And socializing with other kids will probably be a risk factor too.

Yesterday afternoon a Chinese kindergarten inofficially confirmed one case of EV71. The kindergarten is in Pudong close to Huamu Road.

Point is that many paretns simply do not take proper care and precaution for their infants/kids. If they would maintain hygenic standards as prescribed an outbreak will not occur in the manner as it does now.

Some parents are known to send their Ayi with kids to school and don't even check their kids for appearant diseases, such as EV71, Chickepox or a simple thing such as the flu. All of the kids I know who got sick got it from another kid in school or kindergarten. Through observing the "host" kid I would have kept that kid in bed or in hospital.

Many parents are just unbelievable; and when the disease hits them then they cry, bitcX and complain and demand someone else to take the blame and the doctors to help.

The kindergarten my kid goes to simply told me they can't or won't do a thing as it is the parents responsibility.

Can you imagine your kid being infected with EV71 and there is nothing you can do as the parent?!
Remember the movie "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas - that's could be me then.

Parents, Principales, Teachers, Ayis and Health Officials: WAKE UP AND TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT THE VIRUS FROM SPREADING FURTHER.
We are approaching a peak on the outbreak.

From the US Consolate regarding this....
No reported cases in Shanghai

PS: Another good reason to register with your consulate is that they send you facts....not rumours.

Enterovirus 71 (Ev71) Outbreak In Central China
American citizens are advised of an ongoing outbreak in China of an intestinal virus called enterovirus 71, or EV71. This virus causes a variant of hand, foot, and mouth disease. There are no specific precautions for this other than the general hygiene recommendations for living in China.

Over 3300 cases and at least 22 deaths have been reported in Fuyang City in Anhui Province. All of the deaths were children less than 6 years old and most were under 2 years of age. A few additional cases have been confirmed in Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province. Hubei Province and Hong Kong have also reported a few cases.

The symptoms of EV 71 are similar but more severe than the common hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Typically, it starts with a generalized illness, poor appetite, and sore throat, followed by a fever, rashes on the hands, feet, and buttocks along with mouth ulcers. HFMD is often confused with foot-and-mouth disease of cattle, sheep, and swine. Although the names are similar, the two diseases are not related at all and are caused by different viruses.

Infection is spread from person to person by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stool of infected persons. A person is most contagious during the first week of the illness. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.

I have friends with small kids in Anhui. I am seriously trying to get the kids out now for a couple of months. Guess my house is going to be busy for the next month or so. I am worried they will stop people leaving Anhui soon.

BEIJING (Reuters) wrote:
Child virus fears spread to China's capital
Tue May 6, 2008 7:03am EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - Fears of a virus that has killed at least 26 children in China gripped parents in Beijing on Tuesday amid a spreading outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease.

The health scare prompted the Foreign Ministry to seek to assure the country it was doing its best to contain the outbreak.

"The Chinese government is paying great attention to the virus and related departments are taking effective measures to stop it from spreading," ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference.

Hand, foot and mouth is a common illness in children and infants caused by a family of viruses called enteroviruses and outbreaks regularly occur in China.

But the current outbreak has led to fatalities mostly when linked with enterovirus 71 (EV71), which can cause a severe form of the disease that can lead to high fever, paralysis and viral meningitis.

Some 11,905 cases of hand, foot and mouth have been reported in China this year, the official Xinhua news agency said. EV71 has caused 26 deaths, largely in Fuyang, a city in China's eastern province of Anhui. At least two deaths were in the southern province of Guangdong.

All of the deaths in Fuyang were of children under six years old and most were under two.

Parents in Beijing, host city of the 2008 Olympics that has not reported any deaths from EV71, were also on the alert.

"Of course we're worried. If a child got sick, we'd be very frightened," said one woman, bouncing a toddler on her hip. "We know about this virus, but we don't know clearly how to protect ourselves. The information hasn't been thorough enough."

Beijing has had 1,482 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease this year, mostly in children under five, the Beijing News reported.

It was not immediately clear whether any of the Beijing cases involved the EV71 strain, but Beijing said it would from now on release a weekly toll to the media.

The city's Centre for Disease Control has advised that any child found with the illness should be isolated at home, and that if more than three children in a single classroom were infected the class should be suspended, the newspaper said.

A doctor from a Beijing children's hospital declined permission for interviews there, saying it could cause panic.

"Parents are already very nervous, and if they see a camera, they would think that our hospital has such cases and they will take away their children," the doctor told Reuters.

At least two Beijing day-care centers have partially suspended classes after discovering hand, foot and mouth cases among students.

The World Health Organisation this week ruled out the virus as a threat to the Olympics but has cautioned that the virus, which spreads mostly through contact with infected blisters or feces, could be yet to peak.

China, which initially covered up the SARS epidemic in 2003, has denied a cover-up this time round and ordered authorities to aggressively tackle hand, foot and mouth.

An editorial in Monday's China Daily blamed the crisis in Fuyang on a "delayed reaction" by the local government.

But at least one Beijing resident said he had confidence in the government's efforts.

"Before, when SARS hit, that was the scariest time," said He Xinping, the father of an 8-year-old. "But now, with Beijing hosting the Olympics, the city is certain to increase its efforts."
