| Post subject: Rent a car in Shanghai |
Hi guys,
I'm planning to have my chinese driving licence quite soon and I'm wondering how much does it cost to rent a car here ?
Do you guys have any ideas concerning the rates ? for one weekend for example ?
I'm not looking for a big car, a VW Polo or VW Golf is OK.
Let me know if you have further informations,
Thanks |

I'm guessing around 600-700 per day. But that's a wild guess based on a car I rented in Beijing about 4 years ago from Hertz. |

Still around 600RMB for 24 hours. I called some car company a few weeks ago. For foreigners its easy. Bring your passport/Chinese driving license and some deposit, you can have the car. I forgot how much the deposit is, something like 10,000RMB?! You need to check with the company. BTW I didnt rent the car eventually for some reason. |

According to their web site Avis will rent a self-drive car and even assist you to obtain a driving licence for China. Rates are not too bad.

Its really hard for an expat to drive here. You might encount big trouble if any accidents happened. Also there some one try to hit you with a bicyble or motorcycle and get money from you. Most of these guys come from other city. Its better to have a driver to work for you. |

I drive car in Shanghai. It is not as hard as most posts say here. If you want to find a car it is better to avoid companies like Avis and Herts, then you can get price like 3000-4000rmb per month |

4000-5000 rmb/month might get you an polo or Santana without driver. For a mid or higher level car, you might have to pay much more. |

Not true, for under 4000 you can get a Bora, Polo, Peugeot 307, Buick Excelle.
For 5000 you can get a Passat or other similar size cars.
Without driver. |

And here they come!
when it boils down to it, its better to just call a taxi or hail one at ones need.
in the end it costs less, not to mention the struggle and hassle of renting/buying/obtaining drivers license w/o guanxi. |

Renting a car/driver vs. taking taxi is boiling down to individual needs and I've done both. If I use my car more than one round trip of 13 kilometers, I will properly continue to rent my car and driver, especially my driver was only asking RMB 5K per month, including all in-Shanghai mileage. Anyway, anyone wants a reasonably priced car/driver, my driver is still available. See the link below:
