| Post subject: Library Project - Book Donation Drop-off Points |
The Library Project collects books & donations to help under financed schools and orphanages in the developing world. Shanghai now has its first drop-off point at Bubba's Texas Saloon, near the Hongqiao Marriott. If you're in the area, bring a book to Bubba's and help out orphanages & under-financed schools across China.
For more information, check out:
http://www.library-project.org
For what the Library Project has already accomplished, check here:

A bit of local press:

In the future, as time permits, I'll set up a few more drop-off points around Shanghai. If you'd like to donate a book or two from your own collection, let me know. If you'd like your establishment to be a drop-off point, again, let me know. Check back here for more details in the future.

Welcome to The Library Project!
The Library Project donates books and libraries to under financed schools and orphanages in the developing world. We believe education is the key motivator to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the developing world. As we see it education is change.
We accomplish this by:
* Getting the local community involved through book drives and awareness raising
* Providing libraries to under financed orphanages and elementary schools
* Partnering with local NGOs (charities)

This sounds like a great idea.
I'm guessing that the project would prefer childrens books? Easy to read english books? or chinese ? Do the books go to the libraries that are set up or are they sold to provide money to setup these libraries? |

Both English & Chinese books are accepted, but yes, mostly Childrens' books, as they're going out to the countryside schools around China. We're planning a couple fundraisers in a few weeks, too. One may be at the Glamour Bar's Sunday talks. Still in the works. We're also going for some more "official-looking" donation bins for placing around the city. |

Update
Project: Earthquake Relief
On May 12, 2008 China experienced a 7.9 earthquake in Sichuan Province. Currently, in the aftermath of the earthquake, rescue workers across southwest China struggle to reach the tens of thousands of people who remain buried, as the death toll climbs above 13,000. That toll is likely to rise still higher as workers break through to affected areas, making the earthquake China’s deadliest natural disaster in three decades. Hundreds of thousands are injured or homeless.
The Library Project has created a program, "Project: Earthquake Relief", to help rebuild the educational system that was affected as a result of the earthquake. It is projected that hundreds of elementary schools have been damaged in the Sichuan and Shaanxi Provinces. The Library Project will be providing educational resources for the displaced children attending temporary schools.
More on http://www.library-project.org/china_earthquake.html
There will be a weekend book/donation drive coming up on the weekend of the 23-25th of May. Details coming soon. |
