BTW, the map also shows epicenters (purple dots) for the last five years - in answer to the question about earthquake activity in China.

Don't quite agree. Lights were swinging about a foot at the top of Zhangjiang building, which then emptied. I was wondering what on earth I'd eaten before I noticed them.

I'm glad I wasn't the guy at the top on the rope washing the windows. His job got easier though - just hold the cloth still and have the building move.

Whether or not you'll feel a quake depends on a lot of things - structure of the building you're in, how high up you are, substrate below the building. Notice that most of the reports are from people on higher floors. A well designed building will sway with a ground disturbance which intensifies the feeling but increases the safety.

Occasionally that geology major comes in handy...

they evacuated the Center on Chang Le road as well but we're all back inside now. A lot of the foreign companies just evacuated as a precaution. The building security guys were a bit suprised when we all came out of the fire escape Very Happy

Post subject: Anyone feel the earthquake?

An earthquake hit near Chengdu today. Some on Shanghaiist are saying they felt it here in Shanghai. Didn't feel a damn thing myself. Anyone actually notice anything?

some of my friends said they did, but I didn't feel anything.
Everyone is talking about in the local forums I go to, but looks like most of those who felt it are those living/working in a high building...Rolling Eyes

My company is also shutting down for the day because of an earthquake prediction. I am all for an afternoon off, but this is a lame reason. Unless the Chinese have developed some secret technology, you can't predict earthquakes! This might be a foreshock or a precursor to increased seismic activity, but we are talking years not weeks or days. Everyone calm down.

It doesn't take a special magic crystal ball (a normal plastic one ball will do) to predict that there might be aftershocks after an initial large earthquake. they've had one 6.0 after shock already.
