If you are in the office or at home, get under a desk or a table. If you are outside, stand clear of falling glass and other objects. If you are at home, turn off the gas! If you can, buy water and some canned stuff just in case. Make sure you have a flashlight and a radio with some batteries. And a lot of beer. |

tonight i think i need to sleep with clothes on and can't bring any gals back and sleep naked! else, it'll be havoc if people start running and evacuate the building...geez, 7.8??
*nothing much felt in the office as the building is not a high-rise building! |

Most IKEA desks and tables are made of fiber board or laminates. As such, although something is always better than nothing, they would not be my first choice for protection. |

Thats actually funn b/c the way i read it was a prediction for 2.0-6.0 aftershocks between the times of 10-12pm. conspiracy theorists would have to latch onto that warning and wonder whats REALLY up...?

On of the few good things about the high rise buildings and apartmens in SH...they are made out quite good reinforced concrete. At least the the ones which were build in the last 10 years or so. |

hmmm, in theory its reinforced concrete but i wouldnt be surprised if 20% or more of the reinforcing rebar was pulled or undersized in many cases by unscrupulous construction types as a way to make more money.  And yes, i worked on a construction site and saw attempts at it first hand even as late as 2004/5. |

none of course, but really in most cases its falling debris like ceiling tiles or sheetrock or lamp assemblies that are of the greatest concern. So despite the Ikea-like desks many here work on, those WILL afford that level of protection. |

i didnt know that shanghai was inside the earthquake zone. anybody knows the strongest earthquake in shanghai during the last 10-20 years? because 7.8 is really strong and i suspect many buildings in shanghai are not strong enough |

As far as I know, Shanghai has never been particularly close to the epicenter of an earthquake. Here is a map of the major areas of seismic activity in China.

Sorry to hear about the 8000 people (edited) reportedly killed in Sichuan. On the 27th floor near the Pudong Intercontinental, my reaction was that chicken I ate for lunch was getting its final revenge. Apparently as designed for earthquakes, our office building definitely swayed back and forth several times. Then, I learned a lao wai earthquake virgin knows better than some locals to take the stairs (unlike some who wanted to wait for the elevator) and to clear out from directly underneath a building's possible fall line (unlike some...).
Also, my local predecessor had zero evacuation, emergency, or employee communication plans. All well and good, but not if clients in a few other markets and time zones actually pay to know you're getting their work done and have plans in case "stuff" happens to shift responsibilities elsewhere. Or, maybe you actually give enough of a carp to know your employees are OK (How about a mobile phone list? Nope). Great stuff along with knowing the building actually swayed as designed, yet someone else now has some new responsibilities Tuesday. |

for 5 hours, we don't see any real news from the site, no any kind of real video or pictures even audio transfered out of the site, while CCTV is still broadcasting it's routine 30 mins news and all the commercials, Sichuan stations is broadcasting it's local great forums... is there anybody feels strange or uncomfortable about this? |

Relax, the state does not want you to have to worry about this. All will be well shortly. Premiere Wen Jiao Bao is flying in to PERSONALLY supervise the rescue and recovery operations. He is even wearing a windbreaker--fully zipped--to show he means business. |

I think the buildings will be ok. However the windows will blow out. The windows will not withstand anything close to a earthquake. Watch out for flying or falling glass. |
