Post subject: Wallpaper there, everything else gone

Hubby's computer (Dell Latitude D620 running Windows) is acting up.

Background screen is there but not tool bars or icons appear. I can use the task manager to access the hard drive.

Any suggestions?

I assume Windows XP or Vista. Could be a lot of things.
Can you press Windows+E to bring up the explorer window?
Is the start menu there? Is the task bar even there?
Did you have two monitors and now only have one and the icons are on the other monitors?

fix the virus/spyware.

If you can access a command prompt via task manager, then stick some repair software on a usb key and fix.

Suggest 360safe from 360safe.com, and hijackthis, use 360safe to scan and remove what it can, and use hijackthis to remove everything from the startup.

Then work forward from there.

Or send to our office and I'll fix it for $$$$$$ bwahahah.

Ran a scan that said no problems, fiddled around, and desktop's restored. This reminds me of my early days in Mac tech support when we would just turn the thing off and hope for the best. I'm sure this is temporary but maybe it will be okay long enough for him to get it to a real techie. Did a little research and I think it's an IE problem. One of these days he's going to take my advice and stop using it.

me Dell -wXP does that occassionally too especially after a toolbar/menu reconfiguration, but it always comes back after a minute or two, or a hard reboot.
