Why are there so few American clothing chains in Shanghai? H&M, Uniqlo and NEXT seem to be doing well. Why no Gap, real A&F, Ann Taylor, etc.? |

hmmmm....Nautica, Polo, Coach, several others.
I would imagine becuase Ann Taylor markets to a specific upscale/mature demographic in the US.
Not exsactly the image or clothes for an neuvoue riche (spelling) upwardly pretentiious Chinese wannabee... |

H&M and Next are both new to town. American Apparel are on the way and I'm sure others will follow. |

There's Esprit everywhere and some FCUK (still can't believe anyone would do that) around but yeah ...I'm surprised there's no Victoria's Secret, actually. |

I should have worded that better. I'm surprised that the biggest American chains - especially the mid market ones - aren't here. Did see a new Hilfiger store at SBM the other day.
You know what Victoria's Secret is? She's a slut. Actually, we could definitely use one of those. |

her "secret" is u can be wildly successful w/ an inferior product line so long as u have a superior marketing campaign. |

H&M is American? Tough to knock-off a store selling knock-offs! |

I'm still waiting for Marks & Spencers to come to Shanghai. They've got one in Hong Kong so why not?
If M & S came here I would definitely stop buying my underwear in Uniqlo. |
