Post subject: Work for British Consulate?

Hi there,
I read somewhere on this forum about people working part-time jobs at the British Consulate in Shanghai. Does enyone knows anything about that, what sort of job and how much they pay? I am coming to live in Shanghai with my wife this summer but can not find well paid job for me as a chef. Look`s like I have to try somerthing else, still not sure what!
Any idea?
Cheers!!

According to http://www.uk.cn/bj/index.asp?menu_id=559 there is job vacancies in Beijing, guangzhou and chongqing.
You can either wait for feedbacks from the person you mentioned or you can try to check with the UK consulate here.
Here is their coordinates:
British Consulate-General Shanghai, Suite 301, Shanghai Center, 1376 Nanjing Xi Lu Shanghai 200040
Phone: (+86) (0) 21 6279 7650

All the best mate Smile

Why would you not work as a Chef ? Where did you look for Jobs ? Did you apply for a position in any of the bigger hotels here ? Or even bigger Restaurants ? There is lots to do in hospitality - if not in the kitchen then maybe front of the House. Anyway, I guess it does depend on your cv but I dare to say there is for sure openings

I don't mind working as a chef but the pay looks really low from what I have seen on the forums. I am still not sure where the best place to look for jobs is as I am still not in Shanghai. Do you have any suggestions?
We are coming for a visit at the end of June to get our bearings before coming to live there in August. I would be happy to have some interviews/ a few days trial at a restaurant in that period. Any advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your comments guys.

The pay depends on your experience and if you're a hotel or a restaurant Chef. The best place to look is either to go on the Chains or restaurant web page. As far as low pay goes - if you are coming on an expat contract then there will be lots of benefits included. I know foreign chefs who are on local contracts and make anywhere from 7000 to 21000 CNY on local Contracts - again, all depends on your resume. Email to some career section on Hotel web pages or Restaurants is your best bet I'd say. Or try some headhunters if you feel like it

If interested, please send me a PM with your details and I'll be in touch. We hire expat chefs on Local contracts like described above with a couple of different concepts in Shanghai.

As opposed to Beijing where they hired everyone for most of the jobs, in Shanghai for some reason you have to be a British citizen to work at the Consulate, at least it was like that three years ago. In Beijing back in 2001-2002 for a basic Visa Section job or any other LEIII they paid about 13000 rmb Mon-Fri 8.30-4.30. Not the most mind-challenging type of work, very easy and can be extremely boring especially during quiet times. Other jobs were also available from time to time - HR, Commercial Section, IT, etc but I don't know what the salaries were. If you are after a Consulate/Embassy job, Beijing has more options, e.g. Canadian Embassy is always looking for people, the only downside is that you will have to work with Canadians Smile Also being able to speak French would be a bonus.

I'd say a Chef would be a much better option for many reasons, you don't even have to be a good one to get a job in Shanghai. What type of food do you cook and what level Chef? Check out www.chinahospitalitynews.com classifieds.

Good luck! Smile

Thanks Angelgirl! This was helpfull, but Shanghai is only option for me as my wife has signed contract there. If I dont need to be even good chef to find a work, then I guess I`ll be fine! I am not saying I`m the top one but still have 10 years experience in different positions in the kitchen, so should be fine.
Cheers!
