Right. The ol' "screw the advertiser while giving away the magazine for free" strategy. I think all the magazines that tried that strategy are out of business already.

Are you saying the magazines would not write a negative review about restaurants that advertise with them? OR that they would blatantly omit and manipulate info that could harm their commercial interests even if it alienates their readership (like in their "top websites in Shangai" article where they "forgot" to mention the biggest website in Shanghai even though said magazine asked for advice about how to run their own website from the omitted website?).

Nah, that would never happen. These magazines are all really really honest Wink

Can't use them for toilet paper...

Sad. I really feel for that guy everytime I see that magazine. I still flip through it a bit, but in general try my best to ignore it.

Unfortunately, this is a very old trap that many many people have fallen into over the years...in the end, their business is stolen away by their JV partners or their staff. Sad, but true.

http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/index.php?name=MDForum&file=viewtopic&p=8 65980#865980

Is there any way we can make a list of all the places that have been "overtaken" or "re-patriotized" and create something of a 'Black Listed' resource ????

i.e. City Diner

The more that foreigners are 'pushed out' the less I believe that we collectively should continue to patronize establishments like that. Send a strong enough signal and maybe some of that type of shite will be reduced in the future. What I'm not saying is: "If foreigners aren't put in cushy over-sight positions permanently we should all avoid those places" - if they choose to leave on their own accord that is one thing, if they get 'squeezed' out or forced out, that's another.

Thoughts ?

True. But I think in the case of the magazine, it was the staff of the business that stole it away. This is the new "trend".

Good idea for a new thread. Not sure which sub-forum category it should be in.

It's like poker - there's a lot of variations but underneath, same game. Name of this game is China. Going to happen to the biggies, too, sooner or later.

It's not just foreigners who get shafted, that's normal business here. Meanwhile, we ride the tiger Razz

That's the dangerous thing about colonizing, when they finally kick you out the natives get to keep all the goodies. Can't really blame them when we make the big bucks off their backs.

Variation on the theme here, tho. Under the Red Emperor China was actually trying to build itself up. Then along came Deng and they switched to 'let's lure the sucker imperialists in, then we can toss their asses out later when we have all their stuff."

Wouldn't have worked in the olde dayes, we'd just bomb them back into submission. This may be a Plan for the New Century which actually works Very Happy

still doesn't explain why the vast majority of 'western' restaurants in shanghai cannot afford one menu per person and getting two dishes to the table at the same time is a feat extraordinaire Crying or Very sad

I have only been to Da Marco once, and that was years ago. At the time, it was receiving rave reviews, but I was not impressed with the food. I would have put it second behind Pasta Fresca at the time. Also, it was a little pricey compared to Pasta Fresca.

As for service, what struck me about Da Marco was they had one or two Italian people walking around asking diners if everything was ok, and generally making friendly Italian-ish comments in Italian-ish English with Italian-ish hand gestures. All very Italian. Some people really love this sort of attention and atmosphere. Being more of a hermit/unibomber, I don't really like it much. Maybe that was one reason I did not go back.

Now that Pasta Fresca has raised their prices significantly, maybe the two are more similar in price. As for quality of food and service in more recent times, I can not comment.

Anyone else?

I found the linguini most excellent, though there was something funny on my can of Coke. My waitress Anita was not understanding in the slightest!

I have always enjoyed Pasti, the waiters are attentive and friendly, the food is always satisfying for the price. Owner Moritz s a nice guy as well, always happy to talk about the meal and take suggestions or comments.

Shanghaiist is running a very positive review of a new Jamaican place near BaBaiBan. I'll be there tomorrow night if not sooner. Nothing says summer like jerk chicken and ginger beer. Yum!

Checked out Uncle Mike's tonight. The jerk chicken is excellent, had my lips singing for a good half hour after dinner. The veggie patty was good (if a bit sparse). The ginger beer was pretty good but be warned that it's not carbonated. They needed some greens though. My favorite Jamaican restaurant serves collard greens (callaloo?) that finally convinced me to eat my veggies and I was hoping they'd have them here, too, but the veggies were more of the Chinese marinated cabbage variety. The place also feels a bit sterile/fast foodish. I'd say try it if you're in the neighborhood but I don't think I'd make a special trip.
