| Post subject: China net? |
I'm getting really annoyed with the public wifi here. Most of the wifi spots, infact a considerably large proportion of public wifi spots, seem to be China net. So I go to log on and then it brings me to some webpage with China Telecom on the top and then underneath a series of log in things, i.e. user name, password, location and other things all in Chinese.
Because it's got China Telecom on the top, I went to China Telecom and asked them how the hell I access this and they said I need to buy a "Shang Wang Ka" (online card), so I go to the big China Telecom on Yan'an Lu and explain I can't access the internet, I need a Shang Wang Ka and I even show them the webpage that I get everytime I try to connect to China net. So they tell me the Shang Wang Ka is 10rmb and it gives you a 100 minutes use, so me being rather enthusiastic I buy 5.
I then walk to the nearest China net spot I can find, I open the webpage and then I try to enter the details. But the details on the card don't seem to be the right details for the webpage.
I then go back to my office and ask a Chinese friend if they understand what it says (because my Chinese reading skills aren't quite up to scratch). After about half an hour of looking at it, entering the details over and over again and making numerous phone calls to China net, she finally comes to the conclusion that China net sold me some online poker card and not a Shang Wang Ka!!!!
So I'm going to go back to China Telecom this morning and ask them what the hell is going on. But I'm not very hopeful that I'm gonna get very far!
Does anyone know how the hell to access the China net points?
I've been trying to access them on my iphone, but I don't think my iPhone should be the source of this problem.
And can anyone recommend some good non-China net spots? I've only found 3 that I can access so far, there have to be more! |

I've never used it, but they have china-net at all the starbucks, and you can buy the vouchers at the counter.
There are plenty of free wifi spots around. The only one I use regularly is Element Fresh, and sometimes Wagas in Plaza 66. I don't like wagas, so if I just need to use their internet, I'll sit in the McDonalds across from it haha.
Anyways, if you're just using it on your iphone, just call China Mobile and add a monthly GPRS plan to your phone. 20RMB for 50MB, 100RMB for 800MB, and maybe 200RMB for unlimited (not sure about this one).
Just go to settings -> General -> Network -> Edge, then change APN to cmnet
(this is for china mobile). |

i'm sorry! you often face with idiocy here and there in this country that you just want to laugh it off. On second thought, China net should compensate you for having to visit them twice in person just to obtain shang wang ka! |

Why Starbucks & Wagas aren't listed? Is there an updated list? |
