If you're serious about bringing a car into China, you should contact a relocation company (e.g., Asian Tigers, Sante Fe, Crowne, etc.) for assistance. Those companies can handle the origin pickup, land transit and export paperwork, container shipment, maritime insurance, and destination port formalities, customs clearance, import duties.... but unless it's a really special car, why not buy one here? Also consider: Parking, maintenance, getting a license plate (check on this; there's often a waiting list) and driving in Shanghai.

lawdude is being so nice. basically, you can import a new car if you can get your car allocated into the quota (read: procure a quota spot), then obtain a XuKeZhen (permission to import) then you will need to do the export docs, shipping, import docs, etc (many companies can do that). And if all that was not enough, you get to pay some ridiculous tax on teh car PLUS the licensing fees to get the car on teh road here.

and if you were considering your current car, don't. seems that used cars are no longer allowed to be imported since China has a large Auto Industry to protect. Of course if you have a nice car, driving it in SH will only deteriorate it quickly...an wait until you need to get parts or service...Rolling Eyes

Good luck if you try!
