| Post subject: Macbook HD failure. |
So last night opened my Macbook (Black, 2Gb RAm 160Gb HD), spinning ball and nothing happening. Powered down and now the dreaded folder with ? mark and some "ticking" from the HD.
Guess that's the HD gone. Tried to boot from Startup disk, using diskwarrior, but HD not even shows up in the menu's.
Luckily I use Time machine for backup, so no data lost.
Macbook is 5 months old, with Apple care, so guess replacement HD should be nor problem.
Q: Do I take it back to the Apple store where I bought ot? ( Pc Mall next to Intercontinental, Pudong) or will they send me to a Apple repair center.
In which case what is a good repair center?
Q: doing a "Google" seems that the 160GB have been prone to failure. Is it worthwhile upgrading to 250GB (WD)? |

Easy to replace the drives in those.
Take out the battery.
Unscrew the metal bit (3 screws)
Pull out the drive (its on the left).
Replace with a SATA drive of the size you want.
Its under warranty, so have Apple replace it if you want.
You can just give them the drive, and put in a new drive if you want to do it yourself and avoid the wait for a replacement.
Drives are user replaceable on the Macbooks (not the MBP's though).
If you have issues, let us know and we can sort out stuff with the Apple repair center for you.
Remember, in general, if you have issues, go to the US support and have them sort it out with China. China Apple sucks, and the more times people complain about it, the better for all of us. Conversely, if you have a good experience, do let us know.

So went back to the place were I bought my Macbook. very friendly guy. Took out the old drive installed this in a demo macbook, just to confirm that it was not working. Said he could get me a new HD in exchange for my old drive, as I had the Apple care plan. He made some phone calls to the Apple customer service center and all was OK. Installed a new HD ( with Leopard installed).
Came back home, used my external drive and time machine did the rest. All in all a very good service. |

mgk54, I've been using the first gen macbook for more than 2 years in shanghai now (bought it in singapore) and have encountered problems like the random shutdown and battery issues etc., and like you, I had some problems concerning technical support, finding the right people. I did finally got in touch with a company called SERVICE ONE in xujiahui and they have been really good to me. after they fixed my mac over one weekend for free, (replaced the heatsink, etc) I returned a few weeks after to have my apple remote battery replaced. their guys offered me a brand new remote that same day and I was so amused.Just a couple of months ago, i returned to buy a new battery for my mac, thinking that i've used up its normal lifespan, and again, those guys gave me a brand new battery for free, saying its part of the 2 year warranty. ( I don't have applecare FYI) I personally think apple service in shanghai is actually good if you've met the right guys with the right stuff. you can ask any apple resellers about their exact address in xujiahui, i forgot the name, all i can recall is an orange brown building with wholesalers on the ground floor. service one used to be in the 7th floor but recently transferred. hope this helps |

^yeah, the name of the building contains the words "Pacific" and "Digital," although I can't remember the order, or if there are any other words in it.
The address is 41 Caoxi Bei Lu and the repair is on either the 19th or 21st floor (but NOT the 16th floor, which is where the Daning Apple Store directed me).
Sorry for being vague...I tried to forget that building as quickly as possible due to the extremely slow and overcrowded elevators. |
