Post subject: US Telco Lineman relocating to Shanghai.

Hello all.
I am currently working as Lineman for a US telco. I am also a former Marine and aircraft mech.. I have looked over the Job boards and don't see to many postings outside of advertising and Business related positions (finance and accounting etc.) I am not big on the idea of teaching English but am wondering if anyone out there has some advise for someone in my position. I have a 1 year tourist visa valid for 9 more months. I have a varied Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and Hydraulic background and would like to find a descent job in a technical type field. Oh and I have a degree in Photography and am studying Mandarin. Any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Usually what they need foreigner here for are for management. Most technical workers, with the rare exception of some critical difficult to find technical skills, are would go to locals. With a technical background and some Chinese a language skill and some training in project management, you could probably find a job as a project manager.. this is a skill that is hard to find good people for. You might also consider something entrepreneurial after seeing what the market needs.

^^ you might think to mention that working in any way on an L visa is illegal and they seem to be getting picky about that ...

Thanks for the advice all. I have considered project management just need to find a little experience. Regarding the Visa is it recommended to apply for a working visa here in the US ASAP or wait until a job has been obtained? I have the medical paperwork ready to go but am not sure about the timing. reading some recent posts it seems there are some restrictions regarding visas due to the Olympics.

your background will raise a few eyebrows with the gubment over here, keep in mind that you might fall under more scrutiny than some regular accountant/finance type. Given that, best keep things on the level. Come to have some fun and job hunt, then you'll need a job (or at least an offer? there's info on this site about that) to get a work visa.
