| Post subject: Where to buy old laptop LCD backlight |
I have an old laptop, hardware is mostly working but the case has a lot of cracks. But instead of throwing it away, I'm thinking of turning it into a digital photo frame.
The only problem is that the screen is a bit dim, and maybe the backlight needs to be replaced.
Is there any place in Shanghai where I can have this replaced/repaired for cheap? I don't want to spend more than 100RMB for this.
Also, where can I get tools like soldering irons, solder, and stuff like that?
Thanks, |

The parts will be more than that even if you do it yourself.
Try Qiu Jiang Lu - downstairs in the computer mall, lots of repair stores.
Again, the parts are more than 100RMB, so might not be worth it unless you increase your budget. |

thanks for the reply,
Is that 虬江路? near the Railway Stn? I found it by searching on ditu.google.cn. How much do the parts normally go for? I searched online and I found a singaporean company that sells a spare backlight for around 130RMB excluding shipping. That was for a cracked LCD but working backlights. I thought if I was able to buy it here, then I would at least save the shipping costs. |

Yup, thats the place.
From the station walk forwards to Qiu Jiang lu.
You'll walk past tons of stores selling everything from speakers to motorbikes to old computers to hifi equipment. Keep walking. After about 50 meters the road takes a turn, follow the street with all the crap and keep walking forwards.
You should see a railway line above you. Keep going forward until you see the computer mall. Should be about 2-300 meters walk. Go downstairs using the stairs, go through the plastic dividers hanging from the ceiling and keep walking straight (keep on the right).
Last guy on the right is Mr Zhou, has a repair store, he's pretty honest (unlike some of the other people in there), and does our notebook repairs.
Have him look at it. If it seems expensive, tell him Yan An lu sent you and see if he gets any cheaper. He's pretty reasonable though.
There are other stores in there, but he's one of the better ones, and not out to rip you off.
Take a wander through the place, tons of s/hand crap in there. Buyer beware...
If you know what you want and what it is you need, you are fine though.
I've been going there since the late 90's.
First time I was there was 95. Pretty much the same, except for the subway line and its a little cleaner.
Worth a wander around on a Saturday with a camera for some of the back streets too on a nice day. |

PC Mall near BBB replaced mine (tore the 'monitor' of my laptop down to it's bare bones), they replaced what looked like some type of a long filament or rod at the bottom of the LCD inside. It looked like an 'antennae', only white with wires coming out of each end to a small plug that connected to some type of small circuit board at the base of the LCD.
Wrenched it all back together and cost roughly 250 RMB for the whole sha-bang.
Interesting to say the least..... I'm 100% positive that I got jacked a little bit on the price, but my time was worth more than sitting there arguing over 10 USD. |

They replaced the flourescent tube.
Laptops use a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL).
They sometimes break a few years into usage.
Not a big deal to replace. LCD tv's use them also.
Newer laptops mostly use LED's instead - the color is more consistent over time. |

I live near XuJiaHui, I should try checking the shops there first, I was under the impression that they only had "simple" or common repairs. Replacing the backlights doesn't seem as simple or common to me, since laptop parts are supposed to be non-interchangeable for the most part.
Still, I'm curious about this Qiujiang Lu place, and I might go there this weekend. Considering the age of my laptop, I'm still not sure that I'd find older-generation parts in XuJiaHui. |
