This was presumably a response to the one child policy thing written in the shanghai daily the other day

Stop knocking Western media
By Triston Jacobsohn 2008-5-23

WANG Yong,

I - and many others - are getting a little tired of this attacking of the Western media. Sick and tired.

Firstly: MOST of the donations have come from these Western countries. Why? One reason is because the Western media is keeping them abreast and encouraging them to donate. Did you think all foreigners watch CCTV-9?

Secondly, pain IS compounded when you lose your ONLY child and have no others.

As a Chinese person (I assume you are Chinese) you KNOW the meaning that ONE child brings to a family. Many parents and grandparents work, plan, build for that ONE child.

When that ONE child is lost ?? whole families can lose their purpose.

You KNOW this is true.

The Western media comments re one child are NOT an attack ?? but rather a statement of fact, perhaps trying to get the Western person (who can have many children) to understand the pain being experienced by the Chinese.

Therefore, think before you write.

In one of the most tragic and destructive seismic events ever recorded in human history; thousands of young, energetic and hopeful children, working diligently at their school-desks in the rugged western foothills of largely Qiang-t¡betan Aba Prefecture and nearby counties, were caught completely unaware by the tremendous shock of a powerful earthquake which began ripping through their towns and villages on Monday, May the 12th, 2008 at 2:28 pm on an otherwise lazy, hazy Sichuan afternoon. In those terrifying few moments that followed; thousands lost their lives and a million dreams of sharing in the country’s new-found prosperity, were cruelly shattered.

Sometimes one has to agree with the trailer trash. Liberals ! This heart-strings-tugging swill makes me puke.

Are you stupid ? these unreinforced masonry buildings were built on a known active fault. There are earthquakes in sichuan and everybody knows it.

I wept for them; and weep still. For they were after all, my students as well and they were and always will be a constant source of personal inspiration for me..

Then why don't you do something worthwhile ? have you figured out why so many people died yet ? Has your do-gooder Liberal <spit> brain (if there is such a thing) figured out the connection between the Bentley dealership, the Ferrari dealership, the Maserati dealership, the plethora of Kompressor Mercedes running around Shanghai and the fact that there is no money in Sichuan ?

Oh sure, the foreigners are joining in but who, exactly, is responsible for this state of affairs ?

You better narrow that down a bit, old Tiger. There's plenty of money in Sichuan. It's just not evenly distributed. I was amazed by the auto mile that stretches from the Chengdu airport into town - every dealership you mentioned above and more.

^ You beat me to it, Bergie.

Also I saw my first Bentley in mainland China being driven in Chengdu. There's money in that town and how.

Oh wise one in the ways of the world. Are we to infer that you believe that rural school-children knew they were sitting in inferior buildings, on inferior floor slabs, improperly reinforced, and that they knew they were in an active area for seismic activity, and should have known better then to be sitting there studying when the big one came?

Because that's what it looks like to me you are trying to say. Bravo my friend. You're a genius.

To SXD on Project Sunrise:

I am touched by your posting and what you, your friends and colleagues trying to do. With estimated 14 millions people being displaced by the quake, the government is facing a formidable task of rebuilding. People there will need every help they can get.

Would you please email me your contact information as well as the project detail. I’ll see if I could help raise some funds within my circle of friends. Meanwhile I suggest you to post your project on www.sina.com.cn both in their Chinese and English edition. You may get good responses there.

Thank you for your effort at this difficulty time, and may your wish soon realty!

(it is so sad with the kids .... i cry everything i see a sad story... what do they know... all children should be free and happy)
==============================================
sources: New York Times

By ANDREW JACOBS
Published: May 27, 2008
CHENGDU, China — In response to inquiries from grieving relatives, local officials announced Monday that parents whose only child was killed or grievously injured in the May 12 earthquake would be exempt from the country’s one-child policy.

The exception, issued by the Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in Sichuan Province, said qualified parents could apply for legal permission to have another child, according to The Associated Press.

Thousands of parents have openly challenged the government over why so many schools collapsed during the earthquake. An estimated 10,000 students are believed to have died.

The anguish of parents and grandparents has been compounded by the one-child policy, which was introduced in 1979 to control population growth. Provincial officials, especially those in rural areas or in regions with large minority populations, are sometimes given latitude in the application of the regulations. In some places, for example, families are permitted to have more than one child if the first is a girl.

According to the policy, local governments can levy steep fines on couples who have more than one child; the children of those who defy the rules are sometimes denied government benefits, including access to a free education.

The committee announced Monday that if a couple’s legally born child was killed in the earthquake, an illegal child under 18 years could be registered as a legal replacement. If the dead child was illegal, it said the family would no longer be responsible for outstanding fines, although parents would not be reimbursed for penalties already paid.

The changes, however, may come as little solace to parents who have only a photo, a backpack or the ashes of their dead son or daughter. Zhongxin Sun, a sociology professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, said some mothers may be too old to conceive; others may have undergone sterilization. “To lose a child is to lose everything for Chinese parents,” said Professor Sun, who is a visiting scholar at Yale University Law School. “A child is their only hope.”

It's true. I saw the pics online some place.

A similar thing happened after the Taiwan quake, though not in anywhere near the same league. Many months after the quake (it may even have been a year or more after), someone did a series of artistic shots models posing in the ruins. They weren't nudie shots, or even especially scantily clad. Also I think the context was a photography exhibition rather than a magazine. Anyway, it caused a bit of controversy.

plenty of photo journalism work could be done during quake period. But the problem is usually photo journalism documentary pictures dont sell. Fashion/model shots do.

Article about: the first paragraph is misleading. Parents whose kid die can have a second one anyway. What is happening here is in fact many families already have a second kid, but did not declare it (which proves there is some freedom in China, not the abortion camp some media describe) - they will now be allowed to declare him.

this is true, french lover. especially in rural areas, but you might have to pay some fine, depends on your local govt. and some minority groups can have multiples.

you can see the difference of focus of the western media v.s. the chinese.

death toll now is 65000 with 24000 missing. 67 dams are said to be not that stable. i really worry about tiny little villages not on the map. no helpers there to cover Sad

I have never understood why so many people are fixated on the one-child thing. It's common sense. X amount of resources, 2X amount of people, something's got to give. Limiting each couple to one child is the fairest way to cut back on people. Is that what bothers the numbskulls, that the policy is fair ?

Chickens come home to roost ... after the first 2,000 years in the area you'd think someone would have noticed the earthquakes.

sportsbike man i think the debate about 1 child policy is to do with b1oody human rights and forced abortsion. but things are not that bad really. its better to have 1 child survive and educated (i am not talking about shanghai, rural china is very poor) than have a dozen not making it.

yes the beichuan school survivors all mentioned there are frequent earthquakes there and they are so used to it, thought it will just be like the ones from before. noone left the classroom until people starts dying.

Bad journalism is everywhere. today i read this crap piece of news saying china earthquake shows china has hope of moving one step towards capitalism and democracy. Hello? stop feeding me US flavoured Big Mac I love my noodles. we will have democracy communist style.

Seen on French TV last night:

- Report introduced as "Chinese victims of the earthquake are now protesting against the government one-child policy"
- Images of parents holding their kids pictures as in prοtest (nobody explained its a local culture thing)
- Interview of the parents (speaking Chinese) explaining all their life was for their kid - working, education etc... What were they going to do now? What is the purpose of their life now? (perfectly normal reactions, nothing to do with protecting the government or even the one child policy)
- Comments in French twisting their words, adding "only child" etc...

Pathetic. Really pathetic.
