Thanks for the information UnderH20.

I will get my friend to go into the bank again tomorrow and try to talk to the supervisor but I am afraid they will refuse to accept the payment again.
Is there any way to make them accept the payment?
Obviously it's not going to get any better if they won't accept the person is trying to pay back this debt.

Sent you a PM. Have someone go with her who is a real asshole. When people at banks act like assholes, you have to act like a real ... well ... er ... like me.

Update, everything sorted out Smile

My friend asked for the manager after they refused to talk. The manager was a really sweet little old man - he gave the front desk people a good rollocking and they set up a payment plan together.

Good advice, as always, Xie Xie !

Nice end to the story.

Its simply incredible that they refused the 5000 initially! Who ever heard of a bank refusing your money!?

It comes hand in hand, either back in the US where as you have Debt Collectors, then going to court to file a small claims > Warrant > Arrest > possible jail time/fines/etc.
Or the Chinese way which sometimes is good but bad also, majority of **** here you have to pay up front, like going to the hospital, goto window 1, pay first, goto window 2, ask what you need done, goto window 3, get medicine, goto room 4 get checked out, goto room 5 get doctors note, etc etc. But on the other hand, its nice to not have debt collectors on your ass and in fear of bad credit which can lead to not having a high credit score to purchase a car, house, even leasing an apt like it is in the US, everything is done in cash and up front, which is nice in some aspects, unfortunately in the OP's situation it was a bad judgment call on living off the CC, there could of been other alternatives but I'm sure the KY Jelly would of ran out in 2 months time. It's how it is here, some people can take the heat, some cant. It's a competitive city, literally regardless of any job/position your in, even if you are the boss of the Co. Theres always someone else out there to gank yo ****. Most don't realize it, or until its too late.

It's a lucky deal that there was a payment plan setup, otherwise there could of been some serious consequences with even a 10k RMB Debt as a foreigner, can only imagine what some people would do for a job here.

The only reason I can think of why they initially refused the money is because the card account was suspended and there was not account number into which they could deposit the money.

Either that or the bank employees believe their own crap about going to jail for not being able to pay. Rolling Eyes

Out of interest, does anyone know what the criteria or qualifications are for becoming a bank teller in China?

Is there a proper application procedure or is it guanxi?

Actually, to be fair, a lot of times the tellers do their best and try to handle customers well. One big problem they have is that their own banking system / process is FUBAR.

I mean, have you ever gone to Bank of China to buy US$? You must have noticed that they have at least 6 different forms -- all in triplicate -- that need to be filled out, stamped, verified and reauthenticated before you can get the US$.

And don't even ask about their system database and if, God forbid, the database has a problem or encounters a for-them unusual problem (such as how to enter an expat's name). It's a total fuck story.

I would go to the bank and negotiate.
Also - try to sell whatever you can...online if you have to.
And, get a **** job if you have to - there is no reason at all to be completely, unabashedly unemployed. You can usher at concerts if you have to....

Finally - ask your parents or other mentor that will take pity on you. You've made a mistake though, and usually, friends/parents will take pity on you - just dont' take them to the cleaners. (Meaning - you better pay them back with more speed than you're paying the bank!)
