SD cards from fake markets are generally NO NO. XD, ProDuo and MicroSD are usually fine. Get them to prove it works before purchase.

DVDs in fake markets *always* suck.

Post subject: FABRIC MARKET

Hello All,

I was curious if anyone can give me recommendations (Good and or Bad) for any particular tailor stalls at the Fabric Market at Lujiabang Lu?

Im picking up a suit (stall # 163 ~ 650rmb, super 150 supposedly) and some shirts (stall # 378 ~ 140rmb per shirt) on Sunday. Was thinking I might have a few more suits and shirts made while picking these up - however I want to try some other shops (that you recommend) and find which tailor made the most satisfactory suit or shirt(and probably have a few more made from those particular tailor)

If you can share your experiences (good or bad) from any stall/store at the Fabric Market (if possible please post the store/stall number)it would be greatly appreciated! In addition to some suits and dress shirts, I was also thinking about a tailored leather Jacket - any recommendations/average price ranges for that? I will post my findings after my little shopping spree Smile....

Thanks in Advance!,

Bob

I had only one good experience at that market. The next two times and last times were a complete disaster. On two separate occasions and two different stalls they managed to totally stuff up every part of my suit and shirts. The first stall made the suit that would fit a kid. I couldn't even do up the fly because it was so small. The jacket was almost ripping at the seams, I could not move my arms forward even if I really tried. The tailor there tried to convince me that the suit was perfect and looks super on me, meanwhile my friends are rolling on the ground laughing, I was not to impressed. How could they make such a huge mistake? They took measurements, why was it so small? So, I gave them one week to fix it, however it was not fixed at all. Waste of time and waste of money, I walked away and lost my deposit.

The second stall also made the suit too small, despite taking measurements. After two times going back to get the suit fixed they finally said in Chinese "Ah, you want European version, not Japanese version, you should have told us". WTF??? They took my size, and why would I want Japanese version? I definitely don't look Japanese. Of course I didn't believe their excuses. Finally they made it so I could fit into it, however the suit jacket was a throw away job, way to uncomfortable.

I know many people who have had bad experiences there and I definitely do not recommend you go. I went out and bought two great suits from that shop called "Crocodile" for 1400 RMB each on special.

Well crossing my fingers the stuff I pickup this weekend turns out ok, or atleast alterations are easily negotiated...

Upon using the search function of this site (yeah I know, Im lazy I should have done this at first...), It seems there are some favorites, and not so favorites amongst the posters.....below is a compilation of my findings from posts up to 18 months in age...

I know somethings change around, and even though I think I filtered out the places that seemed to have suspicious postings (ie, poster only has 1-5 posts), I would much appreciate if you can confirm my findings! ie, if you've been to one of these stalls and can confirm its a recommended or not recommended shop...

Recommended:
83- Suits
116- Shirts
132- Coats
139- Suits
147- Suits
159- Shirts & Suits (though some did mention the suits maybe a miss)
173- Suits
205- Shirts (maybe iffy)
216- Suits
223- Shirts
228- Shirts
237- Shirts
243- Shirts
258- Suits
285- Pants
305- Seersucker/Linen clothing
338- Suits
389- Suits

Not Recommended (or as others have stated "STAY AWAY"):

147
205
226
243
245
282
306
318

Thanks again!,

No stall at that market carries 150s wool. Basically, the best you can get is somewhere between 80 and 100. If you have even felt real 120,130, or 150, you will be able to tell the difference.

Fake market DVD9 is usually crappy VCD. Don't buy DVDs from the fake market. Actual shops or street stands that stay in the same place usually are the best places, since they have a reputation to uphold. They usually offer returns if the movie was crap, too. Or if the subtitles sucked, or in some cases even if you didn't like the movie.

DVD nine has a going rate of 7-9 in my case. VCD is a standard 5 for street stands, although some shops charge 7.

I will update this thread with my findings for future reference of other readers....
Feel free to add your own experiences as well Smile

Picked up suit today from Stall # 163 & Shirts from stall # 378
Suit mostly measures properly - a bit long in the shoulders, but overall "acceptable"., would agree with tim66, probably not real 150s wool, or for that matter 100s, but feels like a higher content of wool than many other stalls.... Perhaps a bad sign, the lower button of the suit came loose when trying it on... Also, no fitting room to try clothes on, hopefully your wearing fashionable boxers....
Shirts were ok, they fit properly, no weird one sleeve being longer than the other,
etc. Shirts are definitely not 100% cotton (washing them now, however their selection of cloth beats many stalls in term of selection and "quality" (fabrics chosen don't feel like they are mostly polyester, cannot see my hand through the fabrics Wink) - "repeat customer deal" - Shirts 135rmb

Images of Suit and Shirt can be seen at the link below:
http://www.bobchu.com/suit

Stall #243 has imported cotton from HK for 250rmb per shirt. The swatches shown feel much better than the other stalls visited thus far - must ask to see the better material...

Stall #159 seems mostly for womens clothing, I didn't ask, but all their demos seem to be for women.

Stall # 205 - mostly linen, but really doesn't specialize in men's clothing - more for women(was thinking of getting a linen shirt, maybe pants)

Stall # 163, gave me a much better deal on a Cashmere Duffle Coat than Stall #132, since I was a "repeat buyer" - ordered with odd options, ie liner & odd pocket locations for the interior - - 700rmb, also "repeat buyer special", extra pair of pants for suit was 160rmb

Stall # 389, Sales lady, demonstrated a burn test on her fabrics - seems none of them are 100% wool (at least for suit materials that I tested), but found one that that was maybe 90% wool (not too much plastic residue after the burn :-p, didn't feel like a 80/20 blend) - Was able to deal to 600rmb for a suit with 2 pairs of pants...owner did not seem happy with the transaction, but her place seemed pretty dead (Monday)

Thanks Bob. This is the first attempt I have seen at centralizing the VAST amount of information about tailors contained on this site. Very helpful. I will add some information tomorrow from my experiences at the fabric market

I wouldn't hold my breath...Wink However, if you do find some stalls that sell good quality cotton, please share with this thread. If you can get price per shirt or whatever item as well as price per square meter that be ideal Very Happy

Update about those shirts from stall # 378:
Shirts are most likely 100% or a very high percentage synthetic fabric - just washed them twice, shirts have a bit of a different feel , but I suppose on the upside they didn't shrink....

Also submitted the recently purchased suit to the folks at styleforum.net for their comments, this may help those ordering a suit in the future...Figured, if Im going through all this work for a tailored garment, might as go all the way and make it proper...

Link to comments about suit...

I went to stall 139 based on a recommendation from the forum. My GF got the jacket down to 300rmb and the shirt down to 90rmb. She is quite the negotiator.

The jacket was a little snug in the shoulders but they fixed it on the spot. It still doesn't feel just right somehow but I have had several people say that it looks good on me and I have worn it about 20 days since I got it. So far so good. The shirt fit perfect but I have only worn it once and haven't tried it on since I washed it. Need to check that out one of these days.

I have been thinking about going back and getting a couple more jackets and a couple of suits made but I would like to find some better fabric. I don't know much about fabric but I can tell the difference between this an my Armani. Of course I could buy 30 of these for what I paid for that sucker.

I'd say its worth the extra money to go to Dave's or Tony the Tailor. Only thing I get from the market now is shirts for 'going out'.

You get what you pay for......

Yep...you do get what you pay for...
I am also a firm believer of that statement, however at my stage in life, getting 10 suits of moderate fabric & build quality (fused, some loose threads, domestic fabrics, but overall a decent suit) vs. one fairly well made suit (canvassed, probably excellent stitching, imported cloth, that is true of its label - most definitely better feel and look....though from what others say, not up to par of HK suits, definitely not Saville Row) is more favorable. When someday, Im at a level where a suit of such level is a comfortable purchase such as this, I'll redo my wardrobe then Wink

Apparently from other posts the rank goes from:
Fabric Market --> Maya-->(Real) Dave's-->Sam's-->Chan's

On a side note, how is Tony the Tailor's work? I see lots of posts about that operation, but it seems many of them are by his staff? I E-mailed him asking for some information, but never got back to me...

Also, can I ask which stall you go to get your "going out" shirts? Smile

Cufflinks: RMB80 for two pairs

The stall owner quoted RMB120 for one pair to start with.

"Nike" "fit dry" short sleeves T-shirt: RMB50!

She quoted RMB980 (Even a REAL Nike drifit is under 300?!)!!!!! Then kept cutting the price in half whilst I kept shaking my head. Her "final" "serious" price was RMB180. It became 50 when I was walking away. But now I know I could have got it at 25! Smarter next time!

Anyone tried to buy "fake" but ok-quality bedsheet and pillowcase? how much should I expect?

Got a suit made by Judy - well, not Judy herself but maybe her uncle or something - and it was utter shite....

I've seen some of the other stuff that gets made there. Total garbage.

203,204 has made some decent suits for visiting co-workers ~400-800 RMB
Shirts are just down the same aisle i its a husband and wife, cant remember the booth#

Best advice I can give for the market is know how a suit should fit, know what you want, and its going to take 2x to 3x as long as you expected to get every thing correct.

Tony, last I heard had visa issues and might be no longer around. When he was it was ~3000 RMB for two suits, two shirts and two ties. Suits were decent quality, he speaks English, and is easy to deal with. Shirts were easily a strong step up in craftsmanship and material from the Market.

And I would still take 1 good suit over 10 bad ones. I'd rather be know as the guy with the great suit that he wears often than the one who suits never look right.

Thanks ShanghaiAdventure! I'll check them out sometime Smile

I was hearing 4000 for Tony the Tailor's work....3000 for 2 sounds like something within my budget to try out Smile... Just need for him to come back I guess Wink

I'd thought I put up this thread to help others avoid the places in the Fabric Market that would (or probably better phrase..."higher chance of") make a very odd looking/fitting suit from the start...

I think it probably takes between 3-4 fittings to get a suit to fit ideally (afterwards, you should probably just stay with that tailor)- finding a tailor in the Fabric Shop to do that without much work - is another issue... If you can, visiting during the weekdays, most seem to be more patient...

Oh_the_Darkness, do you happen to know the store/stall number of Judy's?

Thanks!,

Bob

Whats the quality like on the mens polo shirts? Will the last a while or am I better off going to Uniqlo or H&M or something like that?

Also, do they have shirts without brand names on them? I just want some polo shirts for the summer but don't want any labels (fake or real) on them.
