Post subject: Registration of temporary residence, instructions.

I heard that the police was checking documents at the gate of my compound one morning. Didn't meet them but I decided to do my registration after the next trip outside China. Last week I visited HongKong, and the next day I went to a police station to do the registeration.
Okay, it was a wrong station, but they told me where the correct one is. They also told me what documents I should need.

The process:
1. Find out what is the police station your compound/address belongs to. Ask management property office, your neighbour, somebody knows.
2. Copy three pages of your passport:
- the page of your picture and details
- the page of your Chinese visa
- the page of the latest immigration stamp
3. Take copy of your tenant agreement.
4. And also take your passport with you.
5. Go to the police station, they will fill/let you fill the 'Registration form of temporary residence'. And that's all!

If you do this within 24 hours, no fee, no problems.

I have registered a few times before and always had the original tenant agreement with me as well as a copy for them to keep.

I need to register change of address very soon but the new landlord has taken the orginal back to Hong Kong, I now only have a copy. Is this going to be a problem?

shouldn't be, they have a copy on file for you anyhow. just smile alot and keep handing them the copy as the only thing you have. Smile

Shouldn't be a problem. Only a copy was asked, not original. But they will take your copy so make sure that you don't give them your last copy.

Tomorrow I'll try to extend my F visa in exit&entry bureau, let's see...

^^It would be interesting to find out what the latest is with F visa re-newal in SH.

ZenCafe, I would appreciate an update when you're ready. Also appreciate it if you can let us know your passport origin and whether your original F visa was issued in SH.

I recently registered with the police station and they didn't even want to see my original lease contract. Took the copy and waved me off when I said I had the original. Anyway if you act nice, chances are you won't get fined. I last entered the country back in March.

for 'entering' the country, do they just mean when you enter/exit because of a new visa or you are a new arrival, or if on a multiple entry visa or residence permit, everytime you travel outside of mainland China and come back in?

From what I understand, it is every time you pass through immigration and get an entry stamp. Doesn't matter if you are on a visa or have a resident permit multientry or short term or long term. Hence the need for the a copy of the page with the entrance stamp in your passport.

Yes, no matter the type of your Visa from what I understand, you are 'meant' to register every time you stay somewhere for more than 24 hours. I could be done for being down the pub too long, if they got really nasty.
Reality is a bit different though, I have registered months after entering the country and never had any problems, wouldn't want to push my luck in the current climate though.
My current situation is about change of address not re-entering the country, I seriously doubt there will be any issues, just wasn't sure about needing original lease for them to sight.

You have to register the first time in when you have a Z visa and resident permit, but subsequent trips you don't. If you're on a L or F, you'll have to register every time.

Also, you can't make sweeping conclusions based on one person's experience at one police station. Nothing is consistent across the board here.

Too, your behavior can influence whether you get fined or not... remember the Canadian riding an unlicensed scooter? A rude and obnoxious person can get deported for the same offense that a polite and respectful person will get fined for.

As for the lease, I only take a copy -- but if I'm registering a guest, I take a copy of the lease, AND a letter from my property management saying the person can stay at my house. (My landlord is out of the country, otherwise, I think he would write this letter.) I give the prop manager the name, address and passport number of each guest, and he gives me a chopped letter for each guest.

Hi Mswp, is this a procedure for registering a guest ?

Myself and family have residence permit, and also had registered at local police station.

We will have a relative coming in August with 30 days tourist L-visa. She will stay with us for about 3 months. So I guest, first she needs to get the pink slip. And after the 30-days visa expired, try to renew at PSB. And I believe the pink slip is one the document required.

Hi

I have Work permit and Residence permit.
I have the temporary residence registration for the house am staying.(as a tenant)
My wife will be joining me in 2 days.
She will be coming in L visa.
Am planning to apply for a residence permit for her here.
Should i take a temporary residence for her also ?
If so should i produce my tenant agreement and others for her also
or just produc passports marriage certificate and my residence form is enough considering the fact that am already staying in that place.

The reason am asking is when i tried to register for myself after moving from hotel to house i faced lot of problem as the owner's documents were asked and he did not have proper documents.
I then moved through my broker and somehow got it done. I do not want to go through that again.

Legally...she needs to be registered also.

Marriage to someone who is registered does not give her a "bye"...

Get her registered.
