I'm not sure where you guys all live, but in my part of town there's a massage parlour on every block that offer massages for any part of your body that you want. My gf and I tried out a few, finally found one that has a boss who trains his girls in reflexology and pressure points. Regardless, we haven't paid more than 50 RMB for a back massage. Right now our place is 30 RMB. They speak no English, and yeah, there's no incense or beautiful candles, and looks a bit seedy, but the staff is friendly and they do good work. I suggest you hit some smaller massage parlours. |

I definitely agree, if what you're looking for is just a massage. There's a blindman near my house (and lots of them all over shanghai), where I pay about 45 per hour. Some of the guys don't know what they're doing, so it took a while to find the good ones, but now I know them personally, and can request the skilled guys.
But in a Sauna/Bath house, it's unlikely that you'll find a cheap massage.
BTW, a friend suggested this place on GuYang Lu, near Gubei Lu.

so if you want a legit massage Jenming, why is the sauna worth so much extra?
I'm curious to try myself if it's worth it- I go to one of those blind guy places every week. |

Saunas are more upmarket and have jacuzzi, good shower facilities, often free food, cigarettes etc so the cost is a bit more than just a plain vanilla massage place that often don't even have a shower. |

Yeah, if I want a massage, I go to a massage place. If i want to be cleaner than I've ever been before... I go to a sauna. Perhaps some explanation is in order.
here's a general description (it obviously differs for each place):
They have a bathing area. You wash yourself off before you do any bathing. They have shampoo, soap, razors, toothbrushes, etc. depending on how nice the place is.
After you're clean, you can submit yourself to any number of types of bathing. Dry Sauna, Steam Room, Hot tub, Bubbling bath, REALLY SCALDING HOT bath, ICE COLD bath, whirlpool bath, Herb-infused bath, Milk bath, Waterfall, Rain room bath, pond with the littl fish that eat the dead skin of your body, wave pool, swimming pool... and much more (once again, depending on the place).
Then they have massage. Some of the massage is actually an exfoliation, where they scrape all the dead skin of your body. This can be very *intimate*.
It also may be Thai, Shiatsu, Oil, Korean, Hong Kong style massage.
After that, you can sit in a comfy big chair and watch TV, or movies, get food brought to you, get a facial, manicure/pedicure, haircut, get on the Internet, play cards, pool, table tennis, maybe even a gym.
Nice ones even have tatami rooms where you can just lie your relaxed butt down and SLEEP.
some or most of them have "extra services". At a nice one, it should be easy to avoid.
some of the services I mentioned above (like food and anything that requires some to specifically service you) will cost extra above the entrance fee. for a lot of these places, the entrance fee isn't that much (maybe 50-60 yuan), but the extra services can add up. In theory, you could just go in and out relatively cheaply.
So yeah, i'm not looking to take my friend for a massage... more looking to take him for a Water Park aimed at adults |

@ chingiskhan, I'm living close to Shanxi lu and never noticed a sauna there ... Can u tell me the address of the one you're talking about ?
Moreover, is it possible to go there just for a massage ? not for the happy ending. |

Funny I don't see how more specific I can be. It's at the END of Shaanxi Nan Road just before the intersection with Zhao Jia Bang Road, on the LEFT side of the road as you travel south. On the right is apartment buildings. There's only one there just before the road ends.
Of course you can have a massage without any funny business. It's about 200 rmb. |

东方罗马 was pretty good when they first
opened up, not been there for a few years, but when I did, it was pretty nice.
Nice hot showers, nice large soaking pools, multiple soaks including tea and herbal.
Games, food, shows, cardrooms, , TV, all there. And of course a variety of different styles of massage. These were services on the standard floor. Never ran across "extras" probably b/c i never asked, BUT there is a VIP floor so...who knows.
Was like 60rmb entry back then...probably should call ahead to check now.
Located north on JiangNing Rd just by the bridge over into ZhaBei from Jing An district past the old go-kart place.

sorry about the above message, I remember it well that sauna club is not the one you are after maybe. It takes around RMB 800 for the whole services, which is crazy for men.
Just for your information. Good luck. |
Thanks John. I am going to take some of your earlier advice on the other thread and try somewhere different because as you said, not all the expensive places are the best. |
Really appreciate your approval anyway. There are indeed many a thread in our hands, just catch the best one, man. |

ah- I used to go to places like this in Korea all the time- they call them JimJilBangs there, marvelous stuff.
The scrub down certainly does get intimate- to the level of the guy having to move bits out of the way to get to other bits. I've felt more clean, and at the same time, dirty. |

Just have one more wash again and again until you are totally exhausted, James?

hello to all you current expats. i'm a former expat of taiwan coming to shanghai for a visit. i worked, taught english and studied mandarin for about 4 years in the early 90's. you guys gotta be loving it as much as i did.
all this talk of "non legit" message places is kind of amusing. on a trip to beijing in 1990 i remember a guy getting yanked out of my youth hostel at 6 in the morning for "sleeping with a chinese girl". the military guy sat on his bed and talked to me just to practice his english. it looks like things have loosened up in da lu.
anyway, i'd like to know if the jingan-west nanjing rd area is a good place to stay. i'm going to move around a bit but want a good place to get my sea legs.
as far as message places i'm sure i'll learn a lot when i get there. and since i'm single i'm not afraid to say i'd like an erotic message and anything else that comes my way. the west has a lot of hangups when it comes to sex does it not? i heard there are bars in that area where girls (professional) come up to you, is that true?
you guys and gals hang in there. you are living in a great time!

Marco Polo- in the JingAn area you could have a stroll down Tongren Lu area (south of Nanjing West). As long as you stay out of the Blue Frog, Woodstock, Red Beat and M-Zone(?) you are pretty much guarantted to be accosted by a working girl.
Still on Tongren Lu but north of Nanjing road there's a sauna opposite Malone's bar which I would strongly suspect will give you a massage with the works.
Not sure if the west has a big hangup about sex, so much as paying for sex. But each to their own. |

thanks for the info swiss. are those bars you mentioned a little touristy? i read that the blue frog is a chain. also, i'm not trying to get duped by a he-she either. is that an issue in shanghai? it can't be as bad as thailand. i've seen many a drunk foreigner leave with someone they thought was a girl. |

I've heard that the he-she's cost more than the regular girls so wouldn't imagine one of them will try and pass themselves off as something cheaper.
Blue Frog is a chain, yep, and respectable too- that's why I warned you to stay out of it!
As for touristy / non-touristy- umm, aren't you trying to find a bar full of prostitutes?
I'm not sure whether that's ever going to overlap with a sophisticated ex-pat type of scene. |

I wouldn't have thought so, like you say it's not 1990 any more!
Plenty of my friends have brought girls back to their hotel room |

In my experience, the more expensive the massage parlor, the MORE likely that it's not legit.
Stayed in a really posh hotel once in Hangzhou, wanted to go to the sauna with some friends (incl some female). When we went, we were informed that it was 100rmb each just to get in (plus extra for whatever "services" you wanted), but that women weren't allowed. Now why is that I wonder?
Another time I found a massage parlor that was charging 500 rmb (in a regular neighborhood, mind you, not in a fancy mall). I jokingly asked the greeter (bouncer?) "那么贵,是什么样的按摩?" He looked at me straight-faced and responded "sex massage!" (I think the best part was that when he said it, he raised his arms and waved them around like he was at a rave.)
40-50 kuai massages? Never once been "propositioned."
If you think about it, who in China can afford to go to expensive massage parlors? Business men... with a lot of tension to relieve (and not just in their shoulders).
The thing is, just because a sauna has "additional services" *available* doesn't mean it's not legit. If you don't want them - don't ask for them. If you get offered, politely decline. It's no biggie. |
