Which is the best Shanghainese Restaurant? I've been to Shanghai Uncle and 1221 but wasn't overly impressed. |

Isn't that a bit like asking what is the best American Restaurant?
The food in both instances is just an absolute friggin tasteless greasy mess. |

As crap as the stuff is, i assume the one on Fumin Lu near Changle Lu is pretty good. Always busy. It looks like a little hole in the wall from the front, but it's friggin huge inside. |

The food there used to be fabulous but has gone slightly down hill recently.
Still the signature dishes are the Swiss Steak (tender, succulent and served with a sweet lemon sauce,you tiao haixian(Chinese doughnuts stuffed with seafood) , sheng jian (Shanghanese local fried bread dumplings) and the kao maiyu baked eel. Yummers!
Bring a Chinese person with you as the English menu does NOT do the dishes justice (so many more dishes are offered in Chinese one). |

If it's gone downhill then I wish I'd found it sooner. Ate there a couple of times in the past three weeks and it was fabulous. But you're right about having a Chinese speaker with you. Tried to eat there again on a couple of Saturdays but it was full to overflowing with a queue outside. |

Right cross the street from Bao Luo, there is "Ah Mao" which is pretty good too. Bao Luo is popular, but their cooking and presentation is on the rough side, whereas "Ah Mao" is a little more refined. |

Ah yes I've been to Bao Luo (Polo), I thought it was only OK. But Ur right, it is always busy but I haven't been there in a while. Thanks for the replies, keep them coming! |

Shanghainese friends - presumably who know their stuff - have taken me to Bao Luo as mentioned above and Homes.

Bao Luo's food is terrible and I'm not sure why the locals flock there. I know the history and have been several times and I can tell you that it's subpar Shanghainese food, even when taking the relatively low prices into the equation.
I usually go to the restaurant on the northeast corner of Jinxian and Shanxi a lot (on Jinxian, a few doors down from Osteria). Great place, great prices, decent service, but VERY limited seating. It's better than the one that's always packed a few blocks south (on Shanxi just a bit south of Changle).
For something a bit more upscale, I think Xiao Nan Guo is actually pretty good. Pricey food, but the ingredients, service, and atmosphere are all topnotch. |

This is the correct answer.
As the commercial says:
"Shanghai Taste, Shanghai #1". Located across Jing An Temple, minimal parking. The best original Food that is restaurant based. But 1 rung under the elite Food you get from the "Shanghainese Home Cooked meals in a family home with 4 tables and you eat what the owner cooks". |

Most time I would not bother with Shanghainese food.
However, If I would go eating local food, one good place would be Yuan Yuan on Tai'an & Xingguo lu corner. |

Flash forward to reality. I went to Bao Luo specifically based on this post, and gave it several chances but it can NOT be mentioned as best of anything. The food was totally uninspired and tasteless, but the last straw was when they served everything but the xiao long bao and 1.5 hours later after we'd finished eating still hadn't served it. But they tried to refuse to give us the bill till it came out, saying "it's just coming". Finally they gave in but never again.

YIN has relocated to Four Hengshan Lu, near Wulumuqi Lu, on the second floor of a block-length clutch of restaurants. Their lease in the alley off the grounds of the Jinjiang Hotel ran out a few months ago and they couldn't afford to renew it. On the inside the Old Shanghai decor remains intact, only in a smaller setting. In a way it's more cozy, because less spread out. The likes of Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday still take up the tunes. The biggest difference is knowing that you're not really inside an authentically old Shanghai building, like before. The food is still great; maybe even better than ever. Shanghai style, but light on the sugar and oil. (If that's an oxymoron, so be it.) Had the best jellyfish I've ever tasted, their signature and scrumptious ba bao ya, and a delicious fish. My girlfriend, who never knew the old place, loved it. 5466 5070. |
