Post subject: my yorkie pup is sick!!! Sneezing and coughing...

Help help help.. Im going to the vet tonight but for the past 4 days Max has been sneezing and coughing.. I know that dogs cant get a cold like people but maybe he has kennel Cough?? When he sneezes water / snot comes out of his little nose.. Its clear with no discoloring.

Will he be ok? I have always had big dogs in my life and this is the first time we have a small breed.

He seems ok even with the sneezing.. He eat plenty of food.. Too much actually and drink lots of water..
His poop is solid and no worms in it.. He plays around but gets tired fast I guess compared to what a bigger dog would..

Any comments are welcome to what could be wrong with Max

If the snot is clear that is a good sign. My dog had kennel cough when we rescued her from the pound and it was much worse than what you are describing - it included runny nose (not clear snot), watery eyes, coughing, diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. I would still make a trip to the vet to be sure. While you are there you should also be able to get Max vaccinated for kennel cough (also referred to as Bordatella).
He may have allergies. I know that sounds a little strange, but not unheard of when it comes to animals.
Other than that it may just be that he gets too excited and tires himself out causing the occasional runny nose and coughing.
This also sounds silly, but my dog (she is a very proper lady Razz ) will sometimes drink like a wild woman when she is active and gets water up her nose that results in runny nose and sneezing!
Like I said, take him to the vet, if you are really worried. You know your dog best, but I don't think it is anything to worry too much about.
Good Luck!

I should also say there are some strains of Bordatella that do not have a vaccination, but the most common does...just an FYI.

One of my dogs had the similiar problem a while ago. She had a severe cough. I was persuaded not to take her to the vet at the beginning, being fold that it was just a minor problem. Then she didn't get better after a week. I finally took her to see the vet and she took the medication for about 3 weeks until she recovered.

Make sure you take your puppy to a good vet. My dog is 6 years old. Anyway I think puppy is much weaker compared to an adult dog. Good luck.

Hi Januza,
Excellent choice you have made regarding your puppy. Dr Gou has been my vet for years and I strongly recommend him. I find him to be thorough and he doesn't overcharge. I hope your pup gets better soon!!! Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I went there last night. He left already but his little nurses were waiting for me. Max got 2 shots. One in the neck which REALLY hurt according to max and one in the leg which wasnt too bad.. Talked to the Doc on the phone and he said its just some medicine for his sneeze and cough and I need to come back again today and he will do a personal check up.

Oh and 2 shots was only 60RMB. Really nice not gettng ripped off. !

Max got 2 more shots today we also noticed that he has some ticks or parasites around his ears and eyes. They are very small and not fleas. They put Frontline on this neck but isnt that only for fleas? Can anyone recommend a tick killer? He actually has alot of them now that I have double double checked him

WE also got some pills for his cough, he has to take 1/2 tab every day
Poor guy!!!!

Last night he was ok. He went peepers and poopers outside and this morning I found just 1 poop in the kitchen. But when I left for work this morning he started to vomit. Since then he has vomited 3 times and have not had any breakfast. Usually he is starving in the morning.

I have decided to take away his food for now and just leave him some water with a little sugar in it.
I feel its too early to take him to the vet again as it might be a reaction to his pills. He did eat 1/2 a pill this morning with some liverpate and 30 min later he started vomiting.

Any comments???

We just moved here 2 weeks ago from the US. My dog Jack had seasonal allergies there and when we arrived here they exploded. Vet told us we can expect them to be 1000 times worse here because of the air quality. Your pup may be developing allergies. Do you know what shots the doc gave him?

glad to hear this.

Newsgirl- if your dog is indoors mostly, consider getting an air filter or few. It really helps!

Thanks for the tip.. Our vet told us it's best only to let him out at night and in the morning for now until we get the allergies under control!!
