Post subject: Bonbon Goers Beware!

Last Saturday night at a club: Two very young foreign guys are out for an evening of fun. The place is crowded, as it always is on the weekends. A Chinese man is trying to pass through the crowd and there is a banging of shoulders. The man is enraged and starts pushing. The foreigner apologizes and says he doesn't want any trouble but it is too late. The Chinese guy's friends rush up and grab the foreigner, his friend jumps up to help and is also grabbed by the Chinese. These two boys are dragged to a private room where they are each held immobile by several men as others beat them up. Several beer bottles are broken over their heads, a glass is smashed in one guy's face, splitting it open. Finally, the assaulters get bored, steal a mobile phone and leave the room. The foreigners are left lying in a pool of blood. Slowly they make their way outside and sit on steps where a crowd gathers. Several girls start crying as they see the smashed and bloodied faces...
This is not the plot of a low-budget film but a real event that happened at Bonbon. Not only did the management NOT call the police but one of the SECURITY staff was helping to beat them up! Both the police and doctor said it is not the first time foreigners have been seriously attacked at Bonbon.
What sort of a club can not only fail to protect it's customers from violence, but worse, join in and condone it?

Not surprised at all. Welcome to China.
If you are not with enough people in your group to be powerful enough against a group of coward goons, don't go there. And if you ever get into a fight here, do what you have to do, quick, make sure it's worth the effort and then run.

Unfortunately, a stpry that has been repeated many times in Shanghai over the three years I have been here.

Someone bumps you....leave.
Someone yells at you....leave.
Someone throws your glass on the floor....leave.
Someone punches you....leave.

I have NEVER seen a foreigner come out on top in any situation.

The police is not doing anything about it when it has happened repeatedly???? Did the club bribe them or what?

Why anyone would go to Bonbon given it's reputation for this sort of stuff I have no idea.

Does it matter? Any insult, real or imaged, will do if someone is in the right mood.

- Some were being obnoxious, some were not.
- None deserved the beating they got for the level of the "infractions' or arguments.
- All of the disagreements started with one on one....and turned into 4-8 on one

I have had many male friends who are bigger or in particularly good shape tell me that guys are always trying to pick fights with them to show that they can take them. I'd imagine that foreigners trigger that reflex in some Chinese men.

A good friend of mine ended up with 5 sticthces in his head from a beer bottle...
5 on 1...

His infraction....bumped a guy in a crowded bar. He was turning away from the bar having just gotten a fresh drink. Apologized politely.

20 minutes later....went to the bathroom. Beer will do that to you! Got jumped in the men's room by the guy and four of his friends....

It is not always an expat azzhole...

well... i imagine most guys from the west behave like it's the wild wild west here... i think the problem stems from that.
i been to these places, the only rude encounters i've experienced was from these west dudes... like take your hat away and put it on their head and make a crazy face... etc

And the only rude behavior I have experienced was the juiced up Chinese...

Let's just say there are azzholes everywhere and move on I guess...

But the biggest point....The westerners usually fight one on one....sort of a code of honor thing among idiots.

Erm, and the saying "you mess with one bean, you mess with the whole burrito" comes from where?

Wouldn't be surprised if it's the guy I've seen in bonbon a few time acting like a complete dick- Chinese guy, telling everyone he's a gangster, desperately hoping that someone stands up to him so he can call the two big bored looking guys that he's mates with.

I saw the same guy again on TRL a few weeks later- he wanted to play me at rock/scissors/paper and I beat him a couple of times, then he wanted to arm wrestle and I beat him, then we had a 'drinking contest' where he downed a thimble full of beer and shouted "F*uck you!" in my face.

Just left the bar, let him pick on some other sucker.

Sorry to hear about the OP and those that follow- pricks are everywhere, it's not a Chinese thing, it's an alcohol thing.

Doesn't this saying refer to wogs? By wogs I mean non-Irish.

There is a bit of that going on too I imagine.

Trawling through Chinese discussion forums for Chinese living overseas sometimes turns up stories of having taken on foreigners in a fight, the point of the story often being that other Chinese should try it, it is possible, etc.

I had a similar experience.

Bumped into a guy at the bar (wasn't my fault, it was both of our faults) but most of the drinks get on him and not me. I offered to buy him another drink but he just shouted at me and left. The way he left quickly I felt something bad was gonna happen so I tried to tell my party we should get out of there. I was with a couple girls only, so not like they're gonna be my backup! They said they wanted to stay, so I decided to go home early by myself. Once I walked out of the club it seemed the coast was clear, but as I walked about a block away I heard some shuffling footsteps and get smashed with a bottle on the side of my head. Luckily the physics of bottle breaking aren't similar to the movies where the guy is left with another jagged weapon in his hand! Anyways, I don't go down but kinda stumble. I'm still pretty in shock at what happens. Two guys are kicking me in the side, I see another two guys standing watch or waiting in line. I'm on the ground now thinking about my best course of action. I grab some scrap metal rebar that luckily was next to me and just wildly swing it up. I caught one guy in the face pretty good. He walks back I guess is bleeding since the other three guys stop beating me to go look at his face. I get up, swing the rebar and hit another guy in the back of the head. At this point the attention gets back on me but I throw the rebar at the other two guys and take off back into the street. I ran back towards the club entrance and the guys didn't follow me. I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab is rare but I thought nah forget it... 'Yo homes, to Bel Air!'

LOL

And a tip if you ever get a cab after a 'skirmish'. Never get it to your exact destination, the driver and local guards will grass you up.

Regarding my original post. Does the frequency of these events mean no results will be gotten from the police? Has anyone in a situation like this informed their consulate? Would the police be moved to act if the consulate was involved? Mind, these boys were not drunk or looking for trouble.

That does sound like a cheap, crappy flick from the 70s. Smile

So the Chinese bumped into the foreigner first, not the other way around, but why the foreigner was the one apologizing instead? Were you in the crowd because you must've gotten the story mixed up there! Razz

So the Chinese men let you witnessed the whole ordeal... in a private room?! What's the password to the private room again? And after the Chinese left them bleeding, you didn't help the boys to walk out of the room? tsk.. tsk.. tsk.. shame on you! Mad

yeah it does sound fake.... perhaps to give bonbon bad business? the main point he's aiming at is bonbon is bad, not the actual fighting...
sometimes it's necessary for these beatings; to maintain respect and decency.
just like the bully video above, keep the asswipes from mouthing off again.
