Ok another question for any Chinese people, since this is the place...
Seriously, what is it about elevators that is so perplexing to the majority of Chinese people?
I need to know this.
THREE times this week (and it's TUESDAY) now I have gotten on an elevator only to have some idiot get on, get upset that it's going in the "wrong" direction, then proceed to press EVERY BUTTON on the elevator. For what? To get angrier now that the elevator has to stop at every freakin' floor?!?!?!
Seriously, what's the deal? It's a VERY SIMPLE CONCEPT. You want to go up, push the "up" button. You want to go down? Ready.... Push the "down" button!
What about this process is so difficult to understand?
And what is the deal with people forcing their way past you to get on the elevator and once they're on it, they press the close door button? They don't understand the concept that MAYBE OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO USE THE ELEVATOR?
I'll be standing next to someone, waiting for the elevator. It's PAINFULLY OBVIOUS that we are both waiting for the elevator. The guy standing next to me will basically push everyone out of his way to get on, then instantly hit the close door button. The number of times I have tried to get in an elevator and have to force the doors open with my hands while some asshat is repeatedly pressing the close door button are too numerous to count.
I know that Chinese people have no concept of "lines" or "standing in queue", but this is just downright RETARDED.
I waste far too much time out of my day, basically because Chinese people have no real concept of elevators and how they work, compiled with downright rudeness.
There was a guy in my building who was bringing up some tables and stuff to what I suppose was a new office, and he had a lot of heavy stuff in the elevator. When he got to his floor, I actually helped him to bring the stuff out and I was rewarded by a guy closing the elevator doors in my face. This wonder of the human species was right in front of the elevator, and I know he saw me hit the button for my floor. I was trying to help out, and I get this retard, who might I add, was one of the same "gifted" individuals that pressed all the buttons because the elevator was going in a direction he didn't approve of.
So, can anyone give me insight into this?
I'd really love to know. |

speaking shanghainese or born in shanghai is not the only standard of being a shanghainese, there are thousands of shanghainese-speaking-peasants. anyone who is not as cosmo as a shanghainese should be could be called "xiang xia ren"/peasant.
and about the elevator thing, i have to say get used to it, friend, you know there are idiots everywhere,i assume you have complained about idiots in your own country too, havnt you? |

I think there are more idiots in the States. Too many safety regulations. It's getting much harder to cull the herd there. |

Back to questions for Chinese...
I have two children. Chinese people have no hesitation about going on, in front of the kids, about how beautiful one of my children is and ignoring the other. Is this not considered rude or insensitive?
I have also seen Chinese tell people that they are fat. Is that not considered to be rude?
Are there things that are considered rude to say to somebody or is everything fair game? |

1)It is. those people are not good at social relationship or at least, inconsiderate.
2)I understand these people seem blunt, but you need to know here it is not as rude as it is in western culture. actually, obesity was regarded as a symbol of wealthy in some certain periods in china's history, while most people had no chance to eat any meat. nowadays, obeasity still could be called "lucky appearance"(福相)in shanghainese. it is only rude for girls and people affected by modern western views. but you still would see that a lotta chubby boys are totally happy with their nicknames- "little fattie"(小胖子). of course,it is changing, these words are getting more and more sensitive, as western culture is merging into chinese culture. |

It is sort of indirect hurt on the feeling and confidence od the other kid, that way, kids get aroused on envy easily to each other inadvertently.

It's a shame that most Chinese can't afford psychological courses relevent or just can't realize they bring up the negative wind against each other easily, sometimes Chinese get very stuck on air. It's a hard deal for you and me.
That what I frequently called the **** brproduced from history of 5000 years. It is sort of the bearing and holdback of long history. |

Well, you don't need to know that, the same as you don't need to know where the shiit comes from.
You have seen the shiiit, but asking more about the shiiit will surely bring yu down to a worse mindset.
So man, just deal with it. |

If it is same person over and over again in the elevator, grab the guy by shirt and belt and kick him out of the elevator. Rude but helpful. I had to do it once, explain him the reason very clearly (in Chinese, something like inconsiderate piece of uneducated ****, in front of 7 other people also living in the same building) and since that time the xiangxiaren is very kind to me. Also good to get to know your neighbours...they often completely agree with you on actually acting to stamp out this animal behaviour.
Did the same with 1 notorious elevator smoker, but in 3 steps:
- First time, asked whether he understood the 'no smoking' sign in the elevator
- Second time, reminded him of the earlier event and warned him
- Third time, took the cigarette out of his mouth and put in his tea jar
- Fourth time and after, he doesn't smoke in the elevator anymore. Anyone in our building knows this story, even the 'bao'an' and they like it very much
Just a question....it he/she from the uneducated generation? Could explain a lot, when the only thing they learned was farmer rudeness. |

Next plan: one guy throws trash out of the window, happened several times. The property management put on messages but of course nobody really does something to change behaviour. they have no located the guy, so next time it happens, the guards will put it in a new garbage bag, leave for 3 days in the sun, ask me, i go there, knock the door and if the guy opens, i throw the trash in and tell...sorry, you forgot something downstairs, please have it back. |

Lady You Should have used the same Man to father both of your daughters... bty I have Identical twin daughters, and once in awhile someone will say Oh You're the pretty One or you're not as pretty as your sister....This happens in the Staes not in China.....
Which one looks like YOU or is it Yu
As for fat...everyday someone will tell me I'm FAT... so one day I get really pissed at this Taxi driver who says I'm fat. I tell him he's fcuking ugly.... Then I find out...They really don't have a word for Big, they say Fat....A lot of Chinese a impressed with Big people, and when they see you they say you're Fat, not as an insult....BTW how fat are you... |

I'm so fat...When I sit around the house, I sit AROUND the house. When my mobile rings, people think I'm backing up. One day I was floating in the ocean and Spain claimed me for the New World. When my husband and I do it missionary style, his ears pop. I even had to stop wearing my yellow raincoat because people kept yelling "Taxi!" |
