Welcome to Shanghai! August will be a rather hot period to arrive, but don't despair, just be mentally prepared for some hot stuff first. It cools in mid September.
Many places and event for you to meet other people. Recommend that you try and check out the yahoo group ShanghaiMamas (google our site for the link as I cant remember it off hand) as it can give you an instant link to expat moms in Shanghai which can help eachouther out with all sorts of issues and can be a decent support group to start with.
As your daughter will be in school hee, get active with the school and meet up with other parents to also build a network of freinds.
And finally, Shanghai Expat does host various events that you are welcome to attend. If not, at least this online forum, despite a few strong/immature/annoying personalities, can be a very good link to the expat community, fromthe comforts of your own home. It will take reading through the forums to get a better feel for which characters online are real and which not so real, but overall i think it still works. |

Also, regarding “kids toys” are they very expensive?
How about clothes?
Thanks again! |

Imported toys (ie Lego's, Tonka trucks, Board games etc) can be hard to find or pricey, so bring as many as you can.
Clothes really depends on your taste and theirs. Most clothes worldwide is made in China these days and so some stuff is available as surplus/ copies etc for very in expensive, BUT if you are dressing your kids in OshKosh or Gap Kids stuff only, it may be a challenge to find , though some good brands do exist here so you will just need to adjust.
Same mentality actually will be required for many things, household brands will be mostly local or international as opposed to what you may be used to , so be ready to make local substitutions. |

Hi, KTK!
I live in Seasons Villas. It isn't "a terrfic place to live in", don't worry. Old, not modern houses - it's true, but very good for kids.
I have 6 months old baby.
We are leaving Shangai soon for holiday and will be back at the end of August.
So, we can meet together in September. Welcome to Seasons! |

Look into the Australian Women's group. They organize a mom and toddler group on Thursdays at Central Residences. It's called Koala Kids. They'll be on holiday during the summer. They are a great group and they are not all Aussies. I've made some of my closest friends from there. |
