Ended up at Judy's too.. #267. She was quite efficient. Got a suit, 2 shirts and 1 trousers for RM1050. Will let you know how it works out

Typically they all have names in that market...

You can get them cheaper and without brand names in some Chinese markets, as low as 15 for the thin ones.

But in the fake market... well, it is a fake market.

I got 3 fake watches (IWC, Panerai and AP) for 520 rmb after opening price of 760 rmb for one. Two were with metal bracelet, one, the AP, was leather strap.

Todays Items:

Stall #378 (Shirts)
Staff was very responsive to my explaining the shirts were a bit off (too long in the arms, sleeves a bit too wide & waist was too large) - gladly took back the 2 shirts I picked up previously to adjust them along with the 4 other shirts I ordered last week. Turns out they have Linen as well, but its kinda on the thin side, they did a burn test on one of their cotton fabrics (beige - looks kinda like linen), and sure enough it looks legit, but might have linen vs. synthetic fibers mixed in....

Stall # 389 (Suit)
Both the Sales Lady (assuming the owner), and the tailor were very responsive to my comments about the fit of the suit and pants... though it seems most every tailor I have worked with insist that longer sleeves on suits is the norm, and that me wanting sleeves to end at the wrist (so some cuff shows) is odd....will be able to pick up the suit next week....Fabrics don't feel that great, but the service seems good thus far....

Stall #243 (Shirt)
This stall has a swatch book of nicer cotton (upon request) for shirts - they won't budge on price though...250rmb for a shirt, I ordered one to see if its comparable to the better shirts I have...will update later...Tailor has a nice pair of assistants - Names: Seven & Eleven...

Stall # 173 (Sports Coat)
Assuming Husband and Wife? Nice people. They have a selection of Linen as well as wool (didn't check the quality of the wool though). Ordered a Linen Sports Coat - 320rmb

Stall # 163 (Suit, Jacket, Black Tie Apparel)
Well...Im going to assume the Tailor today was just having a bad day...very grumpy....the sales folks names are: Tom & Crystal - seem nice, but somewhat artificial...

The Black Tie Apparel/Tux I ordered is pretty much a disaster - not poor workmanship, but just made wrong (looks like a suit), looks nothing like the pictures I gave to them, they are going to try to fix the vest, and some minor adjustments to the jacket, pants and shirt, but I don't think its going to be salvageable.....
The Jacket I ordered doesn't seem quite like the picture I gave him, neckline is off, and is fairly short...but they did get my request for a thin removable liner and internal pockets correct...

About the tailor having an off day (giving him the benefit of the doubt), very unreceptive to my statements about the items not looking like the pictures, (the tux & jacket)

On the upside, quite receptive to me bringing back the suit I picked up last week for better fittings (shoulders taken in a bit, excess sleeve width taken out, and pants shortened a bit) - This stall seems good for suits (we'll see when I get them back), but probably not so much so for jackets & tuxedos....However the tailor does seem to take a certain pride in the workmanship (well fairly good atleast considering the price)

My man and I have had good results from these two tailors:

Stall 194-- I had a cheongsam dress made there. The fit is absolutly perfect! I have a rather large chest and I've never had such a nice fitting top. I'm a costume designer by training and this tailor took all the correct measurements, which alot don't. He took all my suggestions on the dress and transformed them into a great design. Another plus is his assistant speaks good English. I paid 650RMB and worth every penny for the fabulous fit.

stall 247--My man had a dinner jacket made there and it turned out great. The shoulders were a bit tight and the sleeves a bit short but they made the adjustments quickly and effortlessly. The cost was 500RMB but the fabric was high end and he's gotten several compliments on it. Jenny and her staff speak English. A friend had a 3 peice suit made for 400RMB and she was quite happy with the fit and fabric.

Any guidline for the price? ( I'm bad in bargain, so I share some of mine assume it will be useful for others)

For Qi pao - RMB 280 if it's chinese silk (the regular fabric we saw for making qi pao or even souvenir, a bit hard) normally they will quote you at RMB 380

** Not recommend # 246 - Turn out my clothes is over price and bad fitting, the vendor are nice though,they charge me over 300 for a very simple style that might cost 240 in my regular stall( first try dont know the market yet) - not going back again.

# 158 - Good linen and nice vendor, order a small jacket at RMB 100, will pick up next friday,Suit style casual jacket was told RMB 280, not yet negotiate

#323-B , extremely small shop, summer suit - a skirt + jacket with white trim RMB 330 , still a room for the price I guess but most of the tailor quote at 300-380 for a jacket so...

#195, a satin short sleeve shirt RMB 120 similar to the one selling in zara (RMB 180-200 not sure), if anyone got lower price please share

#256 a cotton dress starting RMB 280, deal at RMB 220 ( I overheard someone got 200 ..geez)

** according to my survey, a dress should be RMB 260 for the fine silk, but didnt make any yet ( still just looking around as I already fail once in dong fang lu, next week will being back to fix)

Dong Jia du (Dong fang lu)
#120 Highly recommend if you want qi pao or anything to do with the chinese silk, my sister made several and all fit !! ( so do I) RMB 250 ( as we made almost a dozen there)

Warning- as the shop always full, the owner and tailor will not available unless you call them.

#168 - got a satin shirt made(again) RMB 150 , compare to lu jia bang RMB 120, I can only give the credit that the shirt came out exactly as I want. order a silk spagetthi stip but should be the last order as the price is not so friendly.

P.S.Pass by the souvenir shop and scarf was quote at RMB 480.I dont know what they are thinking.......conclusion,this place is relatively small and expensive, or maybe I just didnt bargain enough.The work on the other hand, is good enough.

I have had good luck with stall #242 (Le Qi Fashion). Women's 3-piece (skirt, pants, jacket) suits and shirts. Have bought 6 women's suits and 2 shirts this trip, no problems. Recommended.

Righto, last night I picked up one large and medium Gucci bag, the brown patterned fabric kind with leather handles, and good quality lining for RMB 265 total. This was after much rending of garments, clutching of throats with a fake tears climax thrown in for good measure.

All of this action can be had at store D3-03. These were the best quality we saw on our visit.

Is it just me, or is it getting harder and harder to bargain at this market. I first went to the market in 2007 and I could easily buy leather Feragamo bags for RMB 90 - 100, sure I had to bargain, but it was never the Operatic Tragedy it has become of late.

Not complaining, I love bargaining, as I get to practice my Chinese.....but my poor old parents were left worse for wear.

Have any of you recently bought a fake Longchamp collapsable bag. I want to grab one to chuck in my suitcase for business trips where I come back with more than I left with.

I have decided it will make me look like a bit of a girlie-man, but it is much better than looking like a refugee with a whole bunch of striped bags.

So can someone give us all a report on a price for fake longchamp bags?

Best place for watches is shops near Yu Yuan. Last bought watches at an average price of 50 Yuan and that had 4 Breitling watches in that.

Ladies Coach handbags - the good quality ones which are not displayed on the shelf - you have to ask to see them in a hidden room or they are all in the luggage bags that are on the floor. The ones which are on display shelves are very low quality. Going price for the high grade Coach handbags RMB180 for medium 10" x 10" to 16" x 12".

If you're talking about the street market behind Jiu Guang, its already closed as of 28 May 2008. Any other suggestions on where to go for watches? Am freaked about going to one of those touristy S&T or nanjing Xi Lu markets

I've read all the interesting tales here on the fabric market - I do have one recommended tailor outside of market

Its "Elegant Boutique" - located in west part of Puxi next to Renaissance Yangtze (next door to Sheraton). The tailor is very experienced, not pushy, perfect English
pricing is middle ground - I got one very nice 3 season suit (lighter fabric, 110 thread count) for 3500 rmb - perfect fit (we needed 3 fittings, but now he has all my measurements - I have got a second one coming and he needed 1 fitting). You can get suits for around 2800 rmb, as high as 10000... bulk of fabrics 3500-4500 - before you start negotiating

Shirts are 3 for 980 rmb for 100 thread count fabric - very nice and mother of pearl buttons (vs the plastic ones you get from Dave's)

so not cheap - but absolutely reliable and he handles problems - no fuss or argument

Now - fabric market question - I just want to get casual pants and cotton shorts done (not super casual but finished good enough to go golfing in them) - any suggestions or does it really matter? I might look at who makes the best suits perhaps ....

I recently came back from my third trip over to Dave's and think I am ready to try something else. I first started going there 5 years ago, and had a great first experience. The last time wasn't as good, and this time was pretty lousy.

To be fair, it is not about the quality; not even too much about the prices, which have not increased too much. You pay depending on the fabric and a shirt runs between 290 to 650 (and up for some Egyptian cottons).

The girl at the counter this time ruined it for them -- no help, no recommendations, not knowledgeable about the fabrics, slow to respond, and referred to a westerner coming in as "here's that fat laowai again". Their delivery person is out for the month of July and she did not offer to set up alternate arrangements. When my own delivery arrangements showed up, they did not include the extra collars I ordered and she was very blase about the oversight.

When you pay 2000rmb for 3 shirts, you expect a little better. In fact, Dave's used to have a free replacement of collar and cuffs if they wore out quickly. This girl just laughed and said that I must be mistaken (I have had them switch for me in the past).

So, I'm sorry to say -- I used to recommend them, but now I'm interested in trying new places a step above the fabric market.

Incidentally, not sure if every place is the same, but they change their fabrics every 3-6 months, so if you really like a shirt or wear out the collars like I do, get an extra one at the same time.

Sorry, I'm confused. Are you talking about the place on the corner of Dongmen Lu and Zhonghua Lu? Or is there a second fabric/tailor market in this area?

He never excused me. When I think about it, it´is very bitter experience. I have problems with my size but when I imagine, how many perfect suits I can buy in my home country for 20.000 RMB..... It was the first time and the last time when I spent so much money for clothing. I´m the biggest IDIOT in the world. ELEGANT BOUTIQUE N E V E R !!!
