The problem is that some places don't even HAVE plastic bags anymore! I was at the supermarket and I forgot to bring a bag, and they had none! I had bought a few things which they tied up with some string! What the hell! I also note that the string was also made of plastic; probably more than would have gone into a bag. I doubt this is really saving anything to do with the environment. |

That's supposed to happen as well. I'm pretty sure they're giving a "grace period" to let people use up the bags they've already paid for. There is supposed to be fines for using the "ultra-thin" bags, and my understanding is that they will be cracking down on this maybe next month. |

Best thing now is that at Kedi/Lawsons etc, they don't instantly put that one chocolate bar you bought into a plastic bag. |

I love the idea! Many places are encouraging less waste on plastic bags and Shanghai has finally taken initative of what will be an everyday occurrance in due time. I have no problem toting things in reusable bags, especially if they are stylish and easy to toss into a purse (or man-bag... tee-hee!).
When push comes to shove, we must also admit that the caliber of plastic used in bags throughout Shangai is less than stellar, which makes re-using the bags improbable. A cheap bag for a cheap price, should you have no other way to tote items... but a way to increase awareness and make people wonder if they really need a bag afterall. |

They should put the price of bags up to 2 rmb. That would have a major effect.
I notice recently when i go to City Shop that I've never seen anyone buying plastic bags but me. Even obnoxious tai tai's pull out some kind of bag from their pocket - albeit discreetly to avoid embarrassment.
They should raise the price of eggs, water and mobile phone charges too. |

But the plastic bags with low price still provided by the supermarket don't affect the environment? Can those bags be recycled? |

Yes, the bags can be recycled. Even the ultra thin ones can be, but the issue is that the ultra-thin bags are difficult and NOT cost effective to recycle. The heavier ones being offered at stores are easier and a bit more affordable to recycle, so I'm pretty sure that soon your local recycling guy will take bags. |

Sorry , had to laugh when i read this.  Its all about habit. many of the locals here still remember tying meat and fishh with leaf fiber or string to carry it home...bag-free.
Letts face it, plastic is a great conveneince that we are all accustomed top now, but it realy isnt very good for the environment. Reusable bags are the way to go.
And most places are offering bags for a fee...which is allowed under the new regulations. |

I went to the supermarket after work for a couple of times, gees, certainly i will put one plastic bag inside of my handbag just in case. In fact, we're still wasting the plastic bags day after day as the rain season remains, security guys give plastic bags for our wet umbrellas in the entrance of the office door/ shopping malls/ restaurants, most of us throw away immediately after using. Those stairs are full of used plastic bags in Xujiahui subway exits, what a shame!
I also was wondering if supermarkets will provide paper bags instead of the plastic ones, what's in their mind though? |

It is really a good mandate, it indeed brings a little bit inconvenience though. By the time of its pullon I have to take my own plastic bags every time I shop at Carrefour and other C-stores nearby. |
