Which color is the Shanleng taxis? I'm not sure if I want to avoid them or ride them, 1300 to 3600 - that's a mighty fine return on investment.

The alternative theivery in this vein is...they stick something in your tire and then suddenly a repair man shows up and wants to charge you a fortune to fix it. That's happened to me.

In addition, be aware of people running along side you trying to snatch things out of your pockets while you are in motion. That is a very popular method used by the out of town gangs (Xin Jiang People). The locals ride so slow they are easy pickins.

it happens everyday, do not put the bag in the basket, front or rear, when you're riding the bicycle. Single Strap Backpack is recommended. and move your bag to the chest when you need to slow down or stop.

long long time lurker here
love reading, hate writing

ok, so i sit in this cab and when we arrive at my destination, I give him 100kuai (fare was 11 kuai) as I didn't have a smaller note. He takes it, looks into his wallet, and gives it back to me aggressively indicating to me that he does not have smaller change

since i didn't have change myself, I tell him I will run to the shop and get him change
i step out of the car, and walk towards the shop only for our friend to speed our like a formula 1 car at the start of the monaco circuit

I wonder why he would leave the fare and do a runner, but secretly i feel happy that i saved 11 kuai (i can spend it on a few drops of wine)
I go to the wine shop only to be told that the 100 kuai note is fake (did you see this coming ? did you ?? if you did, you are a smart one)

the tosser did a switch job on me
not happy at all.

I use a Metro card to pay for taxi fares so I don't have to carry change or worry about getting back fake notes. However, I still watch the driver like a hawk so that s/he will not attempt a card switch, which did happen to a friend of mine. In addition, I put a mark on the card and always make sure that the driver sees the mark when I hand over the card. So far so good.

Yeah, and there also goes another version of the alternative theivery in this vein, that two men in conspiracy, one sneek up to you and raven your pitches and then fleed, that case, if you go up chase him, the other will show up on you way to stop you so inadvertently or undeliberately.

I am not sure I have ever had my "pitches" "ravened" before.

I was "fleed" once though, on a loose Friday night..

That's exactly what I have done - mark the taxi/metro cards with my initials in big uppercase letters - after a taxi driver switched my husband's card with around RMB300 to an empty card.

You will only then not get scamed, once you have developed your own local network. Circle of trust rings any bells?

You guys can also just buy one of those transit card holders that have the subway map printed on the back for like 6Y. That way, it's both harder for the cabbie to swap it AND useful for checking which trains to take. On the other hand, you gotta be able to read tiny Chinese characters though. You can get it from one of those small counter shops in any subway station, I think.

I have yet to be scammed by a cabbie though, probably because I am an Americanized Chinese and speak Mandarin fluently.

don't know if that's true eh,

i have a friend from burundi that told me a few scam stories from nigerians in china.
The best one was this;

a few diplomats from the african republic or so (actually nigerians) came to a beijing meeting by private plane during a convention or so.
And they approached the chinese government by telling them about civil war and disaster and that they needed financial aid fast because children are dying, rivers polluted, civilians sick....
so provided with the cash, they made their way back.

somehow it happened that the chinese gov. called the ambassy of that particular country and were like, guys we just sent your people about their ways with the money. good luck, hope everything goes well etc...

and the consulates were like:
"huh? what are you talking about??"

the chinese stopped all non commercial planes to nigeria and that african republic that day, but i don't think they caught them.

classic, like out of a movie. haha.
they're pretty smart thou, com'on, admit it.

see that youtube video with the guys in the net cafe's writing the emails? check it out.

If I was looking for suckers, that's where I'd start too.

It's hard to tell where the line between scam merchant and pure-bred arsehole begins with my landlord but he is on the lookout for everything he can get from the deep laowei pockets.

On the upside though, when I moved in there were some clothes left over from the previous tenant in one of the cupboards.

Free underwear!

Cool

Generally they will cross your path, smile and say hello. Once you acknowledge they exist, they start to reel you in. They often start with just casual conversation or asking for directions / language assistance and finally ask what you are doing in China. After you tell them and then ask them what they are doing (as if you didn't fucking know already), they will come up with the African diplomat or UN representative story.

I usually tell them I am on my way to lunch -- which I am -- and they follow. Often I get them to pick up the tab and a couple times have gotten "cab fare" from them when I told them I would run home quickly and get the investment money.

If they can't pick up the lunch tab or pay cab fare, I usually insult them like dogs. I'm pretty good at that. Sure it's not news to anybody here.

Haven't really been scammed seriously yet, but if you added up all the extra few kuai here and there that I've been overcharged, I don't think I'd want to know how much it is. I have had a few greedy landlords, but knowing a couple of locals who are lawyers does wonders in staving those fiendish pricks off.
