Just curious...
at a guess 70% of the drivers (as in Driver and then occasional Taxi's) i have encountered here use a reasonably rapid "on/off" motion of the accelorator/gas pedal while driving. I have encountered this in Taiwan as well.
I was wondering why this is done (as it's not been the case in other places i have been to)
Is it to save fuel and if so does it work?
If not are people here taught to drive like that.
Not saying it's any better or worse than any other style, just interested if anyone knew why. |

I'll say it...it is definitely worse. Its not to save fuel, it burns fuel a lot faster than slower acceleration.
They just suck at driving. I really want to see what a driving licence road test is like here! |

Chinese drivers simply do not know how to mechanically operate a car.
They don't know how to steer, brake, accelerate or anything else.
They're just crap at it. |

All the gear columns sound f!*ked.. seriously the concept of maintenance is NON EXISTENT. And that doesn't just refer to cars and motorcycles.. think anything you like.
Good example try looking in the kitchen next time your eating at a local eatery. |

Riding the Clutch, shifting to soon and going 20 mph in 4th gear. I have never seen anyone over 18 kill their engine with the clutch. It is really quite sad. |

Are they downloading porn on their mobile at the same time?
Yes it does use more fuel and it is just plain bad driving...not uncommon in China. |

It's conditioning though.
It's like the constant paranoid fearful rush to get in front of the guy next to you. Despite what it does to the car engine and the car itself they will continue to drive like spoilt kids for the next 50 years. |

I feel there are many countries where it is much worse. India and that general region. Also Tunisia and many parts of Africa I have heard is even worse. |

I heard it's because everyone was used to driving mopeds (scooters) so they drive cars in the same style. |

They drive the way they bike the way they walk. Have seen the same thing in supermarkets as well.
My all time favorite supermarket story:
I go into the Walmart for some reason. They have extra-wide aisles to accommodate for the shopping "customs" of the locals (aka jackassery) where they stop mid-aisle with their cart and wander the aisle, blocking the entire damned aisle simply because they can.
Well, to continue with the story, I had been in the store no longer than 10 minutes when I witnessed something that convinces me that they do this on purpose. A lady not only left her cart mid-aisle, but she actually turned it sideways. Managing to actually block the unblockable aisle. This is why Chinese can't have nice things.
This same behavior translates directly onto driving apparently. It's just an extension of the "me first" mentality. |

I'm pretty sure that it's because of 2 things.
1.) Like many people in many countries, people use technology that they don't really understand. Don't get me wrong, most things are made to be "user friendly" and you don't need to have an intricate knowledge of how things work. ie, computers, cars, a tv... you name it. Most people don't even really understand the basic principles of how a TV works. It gets a signal, you turn it on, kapow, TV!
This is a common occurrence no matter what country you are from. I'm sure some of us on here do, but does everyone here know how an airplane stays in the air or how the Internet works? The problem here is that people TEACHING others to drive don't know how to drive either.
2.) In for example, America, where I'm from, when people learn to drive, they are usually taught by someone who knows how to drive a car. While the concept is pretty simple, there are certain things that are passed on, like how to drive smoothly, what things do etc. You also have to take a test, and during the practical test, doing things like stalling the car or even turning too tightly makes you lose points and you are denied a license.
In China, from what I've seen, people are told the simplest of instructions on how to operate a car, and the license requirement focuses more on "rules of the road" (which are largely ignored). "Put your foot there is go, foot there is stop, move that when you go faster, you'll figure out the rest as you go along".
This is why you'll find taxi drivers doing things like:
putting on the emergency brake at a red light while they still step on the brake pedal and clutch at the same time
shift into 4th gear at 20kph going up a highway onramp
Getting the car up to speed from a complete stop in 2nd (or 3rd!) gear
Turning off the engine at traffic lights (hey, it uses MORE gas to start the engine than it does to idle...)
And so many other wondrous things.... |
