I was just wondering why you need to have highlights put in every month? As far as I know, they should last longer than that.
I'd like to know whether the hairdressers at Benson's are also 'scissor happy' like most other Asian hairdressers when they see long, straight, blonde hair and can't wait to get their scissors into it and mow it down?
Anyone been to Benson's for a 'trim'? and had good results? |

i just had full highlights and haircut at Benson Salon and am very happy with my hair! Benson took time to talk with me about my options and was very clear and honest about what what he could and couldn't do (my hair had layers of previous dark color and about 2 inches of grey roots). I now have dark blonde highlights which aren't brassy or reddish! I love my cut, and never worried about Benson being sissor happy.
Benson and many of his stylists speak excellent english and can communicate well with westerners. Just bring pictures of what you want done and don't be afraid to ask questions (these things should go without saying for going to any new stylist).
His prices are way less then going to any of the european stylists and just as good.

I see the "nearest" metro station is the Line 1 Hanzhonglu station ... is it feasible to walk from there to Benson's? How long would it take? |

shouldn't take you more then 15 minutes to walk from the station. i walk everywhere so this may be too far for some, i guess. |

I had a nice men's cut here on the weekend for 58RMB. 15 minutes or less walk from the station. I don't remember my stylists name. Benson asked me what I wanted first and discussed it w/the stylist. Afterwards when the stylist was done, benson came by again and told him to make a couple adjustments.
I'll go back next time. |

Thanks for the recommendation on Beson's Hair Salon. I went today and had a very pleasant experience. I was very impressed with the hair cut and the place was very clean. Best of all none of the staff tried to sell me any products or push their membership on me which is a definite first in Shanghai. |

I visited Benson Salon twice in the spring of last year. On the first visit, I had a cut and a color by Benson himself. Colorwise, I asked for a rich brown (my hair was a bit washed out and brassy from previous color application 6 months prior), and I got black (not good). I tasked him to just trim my hair, following the layers that were already there. (I was sporting one of the best cuts of my life from a salon overseas.) Result: butchered hair. He blunt cut the whole thing and gave me that ever so lovely triangle head. Anyway, I got home and a friend mentioned that the cut was lopsided. (Didn't notice at time of cut as uneven part was on the side of my head towards the back.) So, I went back to have him fix it. I should have just gone to a different salon, but I wanted him to see how bad the cut was and further complain about my bottom-heavy triangle shaped cut. Anyway, he "fixed it" free of charge. A few months later, I went to Beijing hair culture and the stylist said whoever cut my hair last did a horrible job. She fixed it and gave me the soft framing layers that I requested, but never received, from Benson Salon. I'm a bit suspicious of all the positive reviews above, considering I had such a dismal experience (for a simple cut) from the salon's lead stylist. |

I too had a really TERRIBLE experience at Benson and would advise you to think twice before going there! My haircut was not at all what I wanted eventhough I spent 15 minutes talking to him before I went in to shampoo. I showed him the picture, explained what I wanted and what I certainly don't want. But he kept slicing away and worse yet he continues even when I told him to STOP "that's enough!!". I get the impression that he does what he thinks he knows best but not incorporating into the wish of the customers. I had to have my hair "fixed" like you blackandgreen by Laurent at Eric's whom I'd give a two thumbs up!
I think Benson would be good at giving you a little trim , nothing fancy, no dramtic change. But if you're looking for a good, well-shaped cut. He's not the one. And eventhough you tell him EXACTLY what you want, you won't get it as he'll do what HE wants on your hair!! |

My only experience in Shanghai is with Kelly Coates at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. It's an expensive place (similar price as in Madrid for men haircut), but the work is always very good and the treat as well. |

Just find an old guy with a chair on the sidewalk in a really local neighborhood.
Can't get any cheaper than that. |

I found Benson Salon on the internet per coincidence where other expats highly recommened
Him. As I was new to shanghai I quickly made my choice and Benson did’t deceive me.The staff is friendly and well trained. My chinese is very poor and I’m happy that I can explain my wishes in English. Benson has a lot of experiences with european hair. My blond highlights look very natral and the color the staff choose is not too strong(befor coming to Benson I had feared it would destroy my hair,)
The prices are comparable to European prices, but worth every cent! I enjoy each time I come here and afterwards feel like Jennifer Anison for 3 days. I am already sad about returning to Europe as I know that no French or German hairdresser has made my hair look that beautiful.
Many thanks to all the Benson-staff and many success in the futher

I initially found an advertisement for Benson’s in an expat magazine. On exploring hairdressing with other expat woman in Shanghai,Benson’s was recommended by several of them.As a women over 50, I have had to adapt to the changes in hair thickness etc. that age brings my hair was beginning to thin rapidly, but consulting with Benson about these problems, and having his team genttly work on hair, has resulted in a marked difference and the recovery has been steady. I would highly recommend Benson’s to other expats looking for a friendly, caring and creative experience. |

Well I sure as hell aren't the same person as whoever is above and I have been to Benson's before and am happy to say they did a great job. Both myself and my girlfriend had our hair cut there as we don't really trust our local hairdressors. We live in Wuxi, an hour away from Shanghai by train and we specifically researched a decent 'western' trained hairdresser.
We're actually booked in again to see them next week seeing we'll be in town. My hair was cut by Benson himself - my girlfriend's by the creative director whose name I believe was Sam.
Wrote about it somewhere in our blog http://teamwuxi.blogspot.com feel free to dig it out.
But seriously, our experience with these guys was great. We are Australian btw. Saw other western females getting their hair cut there that same day. Was chatting to Benson, he said they get around 200 foreign customers a month. I'd call that a good sign
My haircut cost 150rmb, my gf's 70rmb from memory. |
