How about Nanxiang Mantou Dian (南翔饅頭店) in Old Town God's Temple (城隍廟)? |

the most famous place is in Yu Yuan garden, the 2nd floor restaurant in the old style building...always a long line of Chinese waiting to get in. The best I've had in China. |

Second that. The touristy claptrap that surrounds it would give anyone pause, but it's true.

I'd actually love to know where I can get "shui jiao" dumplings rather than xiao long which are quite different. When I lived in Beijing they had really great egg and tomato, cucumber and egg, pork with cabbage, lamb with cabbage etc a really wide selection.
Da Niang is close but they usually rotate the choices so they won't always have the ones you want. |

Another vote for Ding Tai Feng (in that shopping centre within XinTianDi), and another for Yang's Fried Dumplings on Wujiang Lu.
Both are so good that you involuntarily close your eyes when you eat them. Arrrgghhghg |

Can't remember if they have a menu of any kind, nor if it's in English. Just look for the line of people standing next to a big iron pan with sizzling dumplings.
When you get to the front of the queue, point and do this:
they'll give you six dumplings. |

小杨生煎?生煎 I don't think shen jian is fried Dumpling, does anyone know! Not xiao yang does make really good shen jian, and they are huge compare to the ones they sell in those breakfast stores. |

Beacause of their popularity, the yangs have two stores opened up on the same street! I don't think they have English menu though. Normally people order by 两 (liang) 1g=16两, usually 1 liang gives you 4 生煎(shen jian). People often buy the 牛肉粉丝汤(soup with beef and green bean noodle) with the shen jian. |

thanks missrain, I'm guessing the lady who wants the english menu might want some more pointers than that.
Point at the big tray of greasy dumplings and say
"Yi Lee-ang!"
If you want the soup too
"Yi wan niu rou tang!"

i ate there only once. 1 bowl of noodles, 1 basket of 4 xiao long bao, 1 vegetable. cny200 for 2 people. and i still felt hungry. it was like paying hotel prices for street food. |
