| Post subject: Your most unusual experience/incident in Shanghai? |
Allow me to indulge myself by beginning...
A while back I went to the science + tech. museum to see one of those 3d films. The guy ended up selling me a ticket to the museum as well, which I didn't want as I'd already seen it previously. He didn't seem keen to refund me, so that put me in a shitty mood (actually I was already pissed having to run the gauntlet of those pushy fake-market salepeople) and no desire to see the movie I'd paid for.
I thought I'd give the ticket to the first person I came across, which was an old fella (50-ish) on his own, coming down the stairs that lead up to those outside gardens. After chatting with this guy in a combination of broken mandarin and english, it turned out he had a daughter studying a few kilometres from where I live in Sydney, and who lived in the next suburb up from me, about a 5 minute drive. Small world, no? |

- the lady on nanjing dong lu really DID just want to have a 10rmb coffee
- I went from minhang to pudong without the taxi driver using his horn
- the driver stopped for me at the pedestrian crossing
- etc etc  |

Well, despite all the sarcasm in this thread so far, I actually witnessed this two days ago:
I saw an old lady use some newspaper to pick up the mess that her poodle had left on the pavement. |

My weirdest experience...
Took taxi to work one morning, then the taxi driver saw another taxi he knew, then they both pulled over. The other taxi driver got out and pulled on our taxi's door, which the handle came off, so my driver got really pissed off. Then they both got out of the car to fight, which the two men started strangling each other's neck. It all happened to take place in front of a hospital, the security guards from the hospital rushed out to pull them apart. I walked away, and hailed another cab to work because I was in a hurry, so I never saw what happened afterwards. |

I guess seeing one crossing guard/traffic cop hit another one in the head with a brick was kind of unusual. |

A bit of a coincidence but considering how many Shanghainese are in Oz now, not that much of a deal to be honest. Particularly notice it when I go back to Oz, every other Chinese seems to be from Shanghai these days. |

Was waiting in line at Century Mart for an invoice when this one lady cut in front of me and the careless retards behind the counter decided to help her first. Then I noticed more people were pushing towards the counter when I yelled "Don't anyone know what a f***en line is???" in English. Then I heard an "ok"...the guy who pushed himself next to me took a step back and waited behind me. |

This happened to me last Friday night.
I was just in front of the lane that leads to my house and there was this Chinese girl just standing there smiling at me. I sort of smiled at her then went down my lane. I got to my building and realised she was following me. I thought it was a little odd but went in and waited for the lift. We had no eye contact. We get in the lift and I press the button for my floor and she doesn't press any button. I thought that maybe she lives on the same floor but I didn't remember her and maybe that's why she smiled at me outside. We get out the lift and when I get to my door I realise she's right behind me.
'What do you want?' I ask her and she says 'I've got nowhere to live so I'm going to live with you'.
'I should coco' I said and when I try to open the door she tries to force her way in. We have a bit of a struggle and I shut the door on her face.
I go outside later to meet my friend and she's still there. I drag her to the lift and downstairs tell the security guards about her. When I come home later she's gone.
And just to answer the obvious questions, no, she wasn't particularly hot otherwise of course I'd let her stay. I'm not a bloody idiot. |

What does "I should coco" mean?
I recently read someone else's post with "coco" in it... I must be out of touch...
No weird stories from me I'm afraid. But that post about queuing up in Century Mart reminded me of my latest tactic to stave off boredom in my uneventful life which is signing visa / bank card invoices at the check out with names like "Luke Skywalker", "Duracell Bunny", "God's Gift" etc seeing as the check out girls never ever look at your signature on the back of the card (or the printerd name on the front for that matter). |

Easy guys, I don't want another one dumped in the pit!
The mention of the taxi fracas reminded me of an incident a year ago on a ride from the bund to minhang via the overhead roads. The driver was pretty young, maybe late 20's, but didn't seem quite with it, always speeding up then slowing down without reason, and tapping the brakes now and then when there was nothing in front of us. Luckily I started paying attention to traffic conditions ahead, something I don't normally do, because once we got to the off-ramp and he approached 2 stationary taxis waiting to turn right onto wuzhong lu, he didn't use the brakes at all, and whacked the taxis in front at about running pace. Because I saw it coming I instinctively braced, which was fortunate because I was in the back with no seat belt. The front passenger of the middle taxi was not so lucky (see link below). I don't like to think what would have happened if the 2 taxis hadn't been there, and we'd sailed across mid-day wuzhong lu traffic.
