| Post subject: Shopping for technical things |
I have several questions that I would need some advice on.
*I want to buy loudspeakers for my computer, but I don't want those heavy ones as I'm bringing them back to Europe with me, and my baggage limit is 20 kg's and I have plenty of other things to bring so they can absolutely not be too heavy. As long as they can reach a (much) higher volume than my current macbook I'm satisfied.
*I want to upgrade my macbook to 2GB RAM from 1GB, I went to the Macstore on Nanjing xi lu (close to fake market 580) and they told me 1400 rmb, I asked them for a discount and they said, we can discuss about that, as I'm always getting fooled I want to know what the price range should be.
*Is it smart to buy technical stuff here in China? I would also like an external harddrive for my mac, should I go to Bestbuy (is it cheaper than Europe?) or should I go to those malls in Xujiahui/Zhongshanpark, etc to buy that?
*I want an iPhone, should I buy it in China or Hongkong, I want to buy the first version because I don't need 3G version. Hope the iPhones will get cheaper after 3G version releases...advice on that needed.
THANK YOU GUYS!!! |

Loudspeaker - Edifer is a pretty reliable brand and they should have every size and shape you could want. Loads of shops in the tech mall on Huai Hai and also of course at Mei Luo Cheng.
RAM - Lawrence at Computer Solutions can do that and he supplies iPhones too. RAM just snaps into place though so you could probably do it yourself but you'd still have to buy the RAM first. Just ask a few places then you'll know what the price should be.
For the iPhone, HK but ONLY if you know where to go otherwise you'll get ripped off big time, much worse than you would here, because you're so much more obviously not a native HKer (or do you speak Cantonese too?). Here iPhones are more like commodities, everyone knows the price so most of the dealers won't try to quote silly prices for you. |

Thanks guys, will check out Edifer.
DIY is quite impossible for me, I know nothing about computers or the price range, i was quoted 1400rmb but dont know if that's a ripoff price, i think it was because the guy said we can discuss about price later.
dont speak cantonese, but planning to go to HK and have no idea where to go to get those kind of stuff...totally clueless about everything... |

Mac suppliers will sell you overpriced Mac specific ram when standard stuff is fine. Get computersolutions to do it for you.
The Huai Hai tech mall has moved from the corner of Huangpi Nan Lu to the corner of Xizang Lu. I've not been to the new one yet. |

One year back i bought a TOSHIBA external harddrive for RMB 450, 80 GB. So far it has not given me any kind of problem. I think present price should be about RMB 400 or little less. |

Macbook ram upgrade
About 650 or so - but to 4G (2 x2G).
You're better off with more ram, and its cheap...
Best Buy or any of the malls in XJH will have drives. Note that USB is crap, and you are probably better off with a firewire case, although those will be a few hundred rmb more.
Around 500-600rmb or so for a 160G in a standard usb case.
The original iPhone went up - less stock == scarcity, so the newer one is slightly cheaper.
You have me on your msn, you can bug me during workdays. |

OK guys, thanks for all your input, went to Mei Luo Chen in Xujiahui today
ended up with external harddrive 120 G for 400 rmb
edifer loudspeakers (not heavy at all) 135 rmb
(UPDATE: I will return them, the volume SUCKED, not loud at all. I need loud ones and loudspeakers that I can use in Europe, considering the electrical cord...i would prefer loudspeakers that i can just connect to the computer and not need battery or electricity cord.)
fixing my old broken camera from fujifilm finepix Z (350rmb)
what i still have left is fixing my macbook, but will they understand it? it is in swedish...
also i have things in my computer that i dont want the guys to see!!! |

Sienna, what I usually do is... I ask a local friend to check these queries online. He checks them, gets the prices and this way I have a good idea on prices. |

Sienna the Macs can change language to Chinese from the menu settings it's not like a Windows PC!
For speakers if you want decent volume then you need battery powered ones otherwise it's just like headphones. |
