Bars & Clubs

Try tea and snack at Chenghaung Teahouse or the lakeside Hu Pan Ju Teahouse. If you're looking for a drink and some excitement, check out Paradise Rock, Lake of the Dream or a beer at the inevitable Irish pub, the Shamrock. Cocktails are decent and often accompanied by live music at Kana Pub and Hangzhou's JZ Club is a good bet for live jazz. The Traveler's Pub lives up to its name, drawing backpackers as well as students from the nearby Hangzhou Academy of Art and staging music—generally folk or jazz—on weekends.

Shoppings

Hangzhou is justly famous for tea and silk, but it's also a great place for freshwater pearls, local crafts, fans, antiques and souvenirs. The night market is a good bet for bargains, as are the Hangzhou Tower Shopping Center in Wulin Square and the stalls of the Sijiqing Clothing Market. Don't forget to haggle.

Stay at a hotel directly on the lake so that you can enjoy the lake in the evening after all the day trippers have gone. Early morning and late evening can be very nice there.

the Shangri-la is right on the lake and it is pricey but it is pretty nice too, if a bit old. Great service and a very nice garden.

Went to Hangzhou last 3 days of May 2008.
We booked SSAW Hotel , 221, Jiefang road, but we booked through Ctrip (wife has VIP ctrip card)
Nice room, internet in room, but basic lobby: 300 rmb per night
It is about 500 meters from the lake.
www.ssaw-hotel.com

2 years ago, we stayed in the lake view hotel, with room with a view lake, but honestly...not worth the 650 rmb/night
Hangzhou Tien Di is a nice place, although as artificial as XTD in shanghai...found a nice live band in a pizza restaurant which converts into pub at night.
We had dinner at Luna near the lake, nice setting, but service just so so.
If you want take a boat ride on the lake, we have found a very nice middle-sized boat, it is run by a family, can seat about 12-15 people; definitely better than the huge tourist boats and much cheaper than the individual ones.
The boat docks in front of the water-jets attraction on the ride side of the lake when you look at the water, cost 20 rmb/person for one hour ride

Hi Rainman,
I lived in Hangzhou for a couple of years, a few of the highlights I found were:

Yuqilin Restaurant (Crystal Garden, 8 Dongpo Road) -Really good Hangzh ounese food, try the crab and tofu soup, song sao yu geng (Madame Song's fish soup), dan huang nan gua (pumpkin with salted duck egg yolk). Not too pricey, English and picture menus, good service and occasional movie stars dropping in.

Louwailou, as someone previously mentioned, is also pretty good for traditional Hangzhou dishes like Beggar's chicken and nicely situated by the lake, but it's more expensive than Crystal Garden.

Longjin Village - Take bus 27 (if I remember rightly) from the North side of the lake to Longjin village, get one of the tea farmers waiting at the bus stop to show you around a plantation. There's a woman there called oo cai di who does a really good tour. There's also a tea-themed park at the final bus stop in Longjin village containing, allegedly, the world's biggest teapot, which is good for a quirky day out.

The Reggae Bar on 95 Shuguang Road is a good place to meet people, a mix of locals and expats.

Enjoy your trip!

Hey i just left there and we splurged and stayed at Overseas China Hotel right across from the Lake, our room was roughly 460 kaui per night with a lske view or you can spend 370 kaui without a view. The room was very large and had great sewrvice. It is a little pricy but comes with Chinese buffet breakfast and is right across from the lake. If you just walk around, you can find many sights to explore. The temples and the Lei Feng Tower is a must...it was an absolutely beautiful sight to see. I highly recommend it.
