Post subject: Scholar moving from LA to SH

Hey everybody,

I just won a scholarship to study at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. I'm a recent college grad from LA, and have never been to China. I'm a good traveler, but living in another country is new to me.
I'm selling everything to my name besides my clothes, laptop, and books for the move. So essentially I'm building up from the base in Shanghai.

I'll be living on campus, but I have no clue where in Shanghai it is located. If any of you could provide helpful tips concerning my move, that would be much appreciated! I'd like to know basic problems expats initially run into after the move so I can see the speed bumps coming.

Thanks!

You'll find that 87% of the more tangible problems are solvable once you are here, it just might take a little extra flexibility or resourcefullness. There's a lot of threads in this forum on moving, what to bring etc.., so read through those. If you have something really specific that you need, that's not mentioned or common then of course please ask.

The best thing to prepare for is the culture shock. Read a couple of 'Moving to China' and 'Working in China' books, not the tourism books. Seriously, DO IT.
You're coming from a Juedo Christian Greko Roman Capitalist CNN drive-everywhere-in-a-big-SUV culture, and China is everything except that Smile Well....the Capitalism-Communism thing is a bit twisted in Shanghai. It will be fun, just prepare for not being prepared Smile

Also, get yourself a copy of The Lonely Planet for Shanghai or China

And stop calling yourself a "scholar" unless you want to be treated like a pretentious twit.
